Baseball's Mock Rock skit: "Got 99 problems but rich rod aint one"
For those of you who don't know what Mock Rock is, it's where members of all the sports at Michigan perform skits. I just ran across this one from the baseball team and it's hilarious.

Am I the only one who found the constant shots at rich rod just utterly tasteless? Yea I understand he didn't win us games but he wasn't a bad guy...
I think we can find a better way to get a few laughs than bashing our ex-head coach over and over... This is michigan fergodsakes.

I have no idea how people can make a judgment call about a football coach who they probably saw 2-3 hours a week (during the game). I have no idea if RR was a "good guy" except that his players spoke highly of him and he wasn't a loud drunk, but for anyone to have some real "opinion" about him as a person is just creating strawmen.

...but hardly anybody was laughing, even within earshot of that cellphone camera. There were a few laughs, mostly at the first time the guy said "I got 99 problems but RichRod ain't one." One cute line does not make a sketch. After that, I think all the laughter was related to the bottles of cough syrup being drank.
Send that sketch back to the script editors. Moar funny, please.
What could have been really funny with the Michigan baseball team; video outtakes from one of their 8- or 7-game losing streaks last year.

I am not sure about the exact history of your statement, but I could definitely see myself rooting for RR in the future. If he coached against UM, I'd probably still root for UM, but I wouldn't hold any additional animosity toward the man.

Disagree. He is merely making fun of the baseball team and their mediocrity. The baseball team is merely making fun of Michigan's past three tumultuous and frustrating years of football marking some of the lowest points we have ever seen the program and the Michigan fan base.
It is Mock Rock: people take shots at other people. Sort of the like the Roasts on Comedy Central. A bunch of mediocre jokes from people trying way to hard while simultaneously pounding the boring and uncreative stereotypes into the ground. I am pretty sure the exact same retort Section 1 made was the same thing the spectators thought when the baseball team made fun of them. Can't say I am that surprised with the past three years versus Hoke's first year of success; it would seem an obvious go to joke. Not really any good but hey not all of us are really that funny on stage.

Come on. It's humorous. Did you see at the beginning when a guy dressed as Fred Flinstone tackled him?
You should have seen the hockey team's skit last year. They did the price is right with forcier as a contestant and they were making jokes about his grades.
The fact that we can laugh at this is a good thing, because it shows how good things are.

I don't understand why people still defend Rich Rod. The guy tanked our program, had major NCAA violations, has been sued multiple times for failing to uphold his end of business deals, and had a very questionable departure from WVU. A southern drawl doesn't make someone a good person.

practice/stretching 15 additional minutes following the 'worst record in program history'...I personally don't consider that 'major violations'..shoot I'd give a guy a gold star for trying to fix what isn't working...he was handed a senior class with ZEROOOO talent....however in contrast rings, gold pants, equipment for cash, cars, and tats...securing half million dollar homes on the cali beachfront, 'escort' girls for recruits...that crap keeps happening all across the nation in 'elite programs' not to mention this BS of grey shirting and oversigning...Rich Rod was villified from the day he arrived on campus. It sucks, he didn't have the results we nor even he wanted...he ALSO brought us the likes of the golden child named Denard...aka DRob...aka a group of kids who just went 11-2 and won a BCS bowl...lay the hell off the guy and move on with it already...seriously..had a chance to talk with him one of the first days he arrived on campus...I personally liked him. Am I happy with how things went down while he was here? Hell no...but Coach Hoke is the man in charge...Jesus enough already with the RR bashing....it's old, it's stale, it's the shit MSU and ohio rely on because well...they have zero substance otherwise...

Directed at MSHOT92:
First, RVB, Molk, Martin, Hemingway and most of those RS seniors - recruited by Carr.
Second, while most may have been RR's recruits, he couldn't get them to play that well. He may have bought the ingredients, but he didn't know how to cook with them. He had a chance at a bowl game. He failed. Miserably. Worst in Michigan history.
Third, comparing your program with the lowest of the low isn't the best of ideas. Those programs might as well say "at least we aren't PSU". They may have been bogus NCAA violations, but they still happened.
Fourth, that senior class with zero talent? They were part of the team that beat Florida/Meyer/Tebow. His inability to use the talent was the problem. Not the talent themselves. Goes along with the second point.
Fifth, while a lot of people seem to dislike RR for one insane reason or another (and I agree a lot of it was pointless criticisms), most people disliked how embarrassing Michigan became with him at the wheel. I don't know what kind of person he is. But statistically speaking? It didn't work out. His defense got worse year after year. His special teams didn't exist. I'm not sure how you can defend that.

Okay point 1: yes those guys were recruited by Carr but were primarily coached and developed by RR. That is the same comment people made/make about Carr winning with Moeller's recruits. Maybe they were Moeller's recruits but Carr developed all those guys. Martin, Molk, and RVB were all very good before Hoke got here. Hemingway was really good but really made some big plays this year; I think he just got more opportunities to make big plays due to scheme but regardless he was huge for us this year. Also, RR brought Denard, Lewan, Schofield, Omameh, Fitz, Hopkins (who seems like an ironically good pick up considering the scheme change), Roundtree, Roh, Jake Ryan, Desmond Morgan, Countess, Floyd (who wasn't good before this year), Kovacs, and Thomas Gordon. Some pretty good players there.
Point 2: He did lose a lot here. Definitely had some problems in the kitchen. Nonetheless, we know the man can cook. Just couldn't cook with the setup at Michigan (maybe needed more time but eh lets not go there). The bowl game probably was not the final straw and might not have been the best measuring stick.
Point 3: Some might say those programs are the lowest of the lows (I generally don't have a good impression of them) while others might think highly of them. They sure have won a lot of big games and championships (which sucks). They might have been bullshit NCAA violations but they weren't exactly RR's fault; well, not entirely since as head coach he has to guide and lead the program (although the CARA forms were developed to keep the head coach out of it...).
Point 4: They might have been part of the team that beat Tebow/Meyer/Mattison (sidenote: watched the game a while ago and it was weird to see him on the sideline), but it was a Florida team that was 9-3 and beat only one team that was ranked at the end of the year (Tennessee; the second best team they beat was an 8-5 Kentucky). Tebow won the Heisman but arguably got better his junior and senior years. And I believe our offense carried us that game; the defense gave up 35 points. We had Hart, Henne, Long, Mannigham, and Arrington, all significant talents making an impact in the NFL. They (and all of the offense) left for the 2008 season. The talented seniors on defense that Molk commented about (negatively as he doesn't mince words) in his ESPN interview with Rothstein did not perform. Brandon Graham was the best, but the only players who were drafted from that defense and stuck in the NFL are Jamison, who is working his way into the Texan lineup; Morgan Trent, who was cut and resigned and didn't play much; and Jonas Mouton who has yet to have the ability to make an impact. I forget the statistic, but didn't 3&O say that Michigan dressed 40some freshman and walkons for the Ohio game in 2008?
Point 5: Yes, as in point 3, Michigan was not good under RR's tenure. It was embarrasing at times. However, sometimes the most embarrasing moments were our own fans. Yes, he lost, everyone admits that. It is the tactless shots and unfounded criticisms that frustrate people. There were a lot things that happened to cause us to fail. RR was a key piece but there were other things that played a critical role. However, everyone is happy we have Hoke and are winning again. Let's appreciate that.

I'm beginning to wonder if the Free Press might have done the University and Rodriguez a favor by diverting everyone's attention to the basically irrelevant additional-minutes violations and away from the much more serious misuse of GAs as assistant coaches that triggered the worst of the penalties and that were a repeat of similar violations at WVU.

My understanding is that the NCAA violation business is made into something insanely bigger than what it actually was. RichRod leaving WVU is pretty much on par with how most college coaches jump from job to job. If I recall, SDSU was not happy with how Hoke left. The only thing that helped him was that everyone from here to Jupiter knew that this was his dream job. That and there wasn't a buyout fiasco (which was Martin and Coleman's fault).
Rich Rod was not a good fit in Ann Arbor. And he was a terrible coach at Michigan. Period. FREEP made him out to be the Devil. John Bacon made him out to be some underappreciated savior. And there were players that liked him. Whether or not he was a good person is hard to judge from the skewed perspectives that we got. I wouldn't go out of my way to hang out with him based on what I've seen at press conferences. But I wouldn't toss him out of my house if he came over either. YMMV. (For the record, I'd totally hang out with Hoke. Dude seems all sorts of awesome.)

For whatever reason there are definitely those who believe that you can't like one coach (like Hoke for example) without vilifying another (like RR). Why i have no idea but to me anyways stuff like this are things I'd expect out of MSU or Ohio. Not us.
I found this more cruel than funny. But then again I dont think mocking somebody's greatest personal failure is grounds for humor. Maybe i'm just getting old and soft and out of touch.

The football team was in the audience, most of whom played for, committed to, and like Coach Rodriguez. I wonder how they felt at all the shots being taken at a man that used to be (and in some cases probably still is) one of the most important people in their lives.
The players can avoid most media bashing of RR by avoiding the newspapers, and the sometimes ridiculous stuff said here and other sites. But this is a CHARITY event that they give their time to attend. I get that it's all it good fun, but IME, this crossed the line. One throwaway line about Rodriguez? fine, people would probably get over it. But to have the whole focus of the skit be about a man who tried as hard as he could for three years, it's really stupid, and everyone involved just dropped a few spots on my list.

Good point. If I recall correctly, the "judges" of the event thought it was in terrible taste and gave them some pretty low scores. I thought the opening was funny, but it got repetitive and unfunny as it went on.

This was my first thought. I would think that many of the football players would be upset about this. Kind of a tough issue to play off as something simple.
