Hoke has 64% approval rating among U-M fans

Public Policy Polling, a Democratic pollster that often publishes amusing surveys in addition to their political work, asked some questions related to Michigan athletics during their surveys related to Tuesday's GOP primary.

Among the MGoRelated content:

  • Among Michigan fans, 64 percent approve of the job Brady Hoke is doing. Six percent disapprove, while 29 percent are unsure.
  • Among Michigan fans, 26 percent have a positive opinion of Rich Rodriguez, versus 32 percent who have an unfavorable opinion. Forty-two percent are unsure.
  • Among Michigan fans, 39 percent approve of the way John Beilein is doing his job; eight percent disapprove, while 53 percent are unsure.
  • Sparty fans approve of D'Antonio along similar lines as Hoke, 68-4-28. They approve of Izzo even more strongly, 78-3-19.
  • Within the state as a whole, 37 percent of Michiganders consider themselves Michigan fans, versus 31 percent who root for Sparty. Thirty-two percent consider themselves a fan of neither.
  • Voters for Obama in 2008 are slightly more inclined to favor Michigan. Of Obama voters, 40 percent favor Michigan, 27 percent favor Sparty. Of McCain voters, Michigan still leads, at 35 percent, followed by Sparty at 34 percent. (Corrects 53 to 35 for McCain)

There are other sports questions in the data. The poll was conducted Feb. 10-12 by automated telephone interview, and has a margin of error of +/- 4.1 percent. Crosstabs here.

Yeah, it's awfully hard to believe there are this many people sitting on the fence for every coach.  Tom Izzo has been the head coach at MSU 17 years and still one in five Spartans can't make up his/her mind about him?  Most of these "unsure" people probably aren't really sports fans (or at least, aren't fans of that sport).

He had one good year at Ball St then left.  Same thing at SDSU.  So there's not a lot of sustained success in his resume.  So people may be in "wait and see" mode still.  I know I am.  Plus, all Urban Meyer has done is pull out his MNC rings and gotten the recruits to flock back to Columbus.

I'm sure another 10 win season will get that number going up.

How can anyone disapprove of Coach Hoke and Coach Beilein? I guess this is just another sign that no matter what you do, someone is going to be unhappy about it.

In addition to the sampling error, some portion of people responding to polls aren't taking it seriously and some are just plain stupid.  When offered 2 choices (like in this poll), each answer tends to get at least 3-5% no matter how ridiculous.  For example, in a 1999 Gallup Poll, 6% of respondents thought the moon landings were faked.

Interesting that both McCain and Obama voters favor Michigan in ratios much greater than the 37-31 overall split.

So...sparty fans don't vote or they vote for Ron Paul?

Re: Hoke, I understand if people are unsure but how do 6% of them disapprove? Blows my mind.

Michigan fans vote way more than State fans do apparently. Raise your hand if you're surprised.

I also like the split of college football apathy between republican and democratic voters. Again, not exactly earth-shattering news here, but interesting to see actual numbers put to it: 87% of republican voters had allegiance to Michigan or MSU, but only 67% of democratic voters did. Granted, some of those who choose neither are college football fans who have an allegiance to an out-of-state school, but most are probably people who don't care about college football.

Who are unsure and disapprove are on drugs.  There is absolutely no reason to dislike what is going on right now.  I may be narrow minded, but not an idiot, like a certain percentage of people seem to be.  That is all.

is shockingly stupid. There are more Michigan fans than MSU fans in the state. Of course more Obama supporters root for Michigan AND more McCain supporters root for Michigan.

Wha?

Obama: 40 - 27 = 13% more pro-M

McCain: 53 - 34 = 19% more pro-M

Who are these people?  They must be the negative of the negative - people who would dispparove of receiving a million dollar lottery prize because they'd have to pay a bunch of taxes on it.   Sheesh!
