Hoke has 64% approval rating among U-M fans
- Among Michigan fans, 64 percent approve of the job Brady Hoke is doing. Six percent disapprove, while 29 percent are unsure.
- Among Michigan fans, 26 percent have a positive opinion of Rich Rodriguez, versus 32 percent who have an unfavorable opinion. Forty-two percent are unsure.
- Among Michigan fans, 39 percent approve of the way John Beilein is doing his job; eight percent disapprove, while 53 percent are unsure.
- Sparty fans approve of D'Antonio along similar lines as Hoke, 68-4-28. They approve of Izzo even more strongly, 78-3-19.
- Within the state as a whole, 37 percent of Michiganders consider themselves Michigan fans, versus 31 percent who root for Sparty. Thirty-two percent consider themselves a fan of neither.
- Voters for Obama in 2008 are slightly more inclined to favor Michigan. Of Obama voters, 40 percent favor Michigan, 27 percent favor Sparty. Of McCain voters, Michigan still leads, at 35 percent, followed by Sparty at 34 percent. (Corrects 53 to 35 for McCain)

I don't believe that there are 37% M fans and 31% State fans. That seems off.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:12 PM ^
That is a fickle number. They took this same poll after our 3-9 season and it was split at 34% for each UM and MSU. Now that we are back on our feet the bandwagon jumpers seem t be jumping back on the maize and blue bandwagon.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:18 PM ^
That's also margin-of-error variation (the margin is +/- 4.1%).
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:28 PM ^
its really 45% UM, 26% MSU and 38% that are not sports fans..
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:42 PM ^
have their head up their ass
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:46 PM ^
It also tells me that 31% of Michigan adults like gummy worms in their rum punch.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:58 PM ^
What's really crazy about that number is that means 31% of the state is attending or has graduated from Michigan State, since they don't have any bandwagon fans.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:00 PM ^
What's the guy gotta do? He only won the programs 1st BCS bowl in 10+ years in his first year plus a ton of other things
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:03 PM ^
a better way to look at it is that 91% of the people who gave a response approve. i assume the "unsures" would be better categorized as "people who don't pay attention."
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:10 PM ^
Yeah, it's awfully hard to believe there are this many people sitting on the fence for every coach. Tom Izzo has been the head coach at MSU 17 years and still one in five Spartans can't make up his/her mind about him? Most of these "unsure" people probably aren't really sports fans (or at least, aren't fans of that sport).
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:12 PM ^
Win a B1G Championship
Win a Rosebowl
Win a MNC
There are plenty of objectives for the guy to accomplish still.
1 season does not tell the whole story.
I am part of the 64% though!
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:58 PM ^
He had one good year at Ball St then left. Same thing at SDSU. So there's not a lot of sustained success in his resume. So people may be in "wait and see" mode still. I know I am. Plus, all Urban Meyer has done is pull out his MNC rings and gotten the recruits to flock back to Columbus.
I'm sure another 10 win season will get that number going up.
February 22nd, 2012 at 8:10 PM ^
But the question isn't about the future. It's just whether or not you approve of the job the coach is doing right now.
February 22nd, 2012 at 8:03 PM ^
"What's a guy gotta do"?
I dunno... cancer remains uncured...
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:00 PM ^
How can anyone disapprove of Coach Hoke and Coach Beilein? I guess this is just another sign that no matter what you do, someone is going to be unhappy about it.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:02 PM ^
Who are the 6% of Michigan fans who disapprove of Hoke? Or the 29%, who don't have an opinion?
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:12 PM ^
His Dudeness has a large family.
February 22nd, 2012 at 7:38 PM ^
I would like to know what they think Hoke should be doing better? I guess some people will say he should be beating MSU, but what else: nat. championship in year one; number 1 recruiting class in year one, pooping gold?
February 22nd, 2012 at 7:48 PM ^
In addition to the sampling error, some portion of people responding to polls aren't taking it seriously and some are just plain stupid. When offered 2 choices (like in this poll), each answer tends to get at least 3-5% no matter how ridiculous. For example, in a 1999 Gallup Poll, 6% of respondents thought the moon landings were faked.
February 22nd, 2012 at 9:40 PM ^
And those 6% were right!
/S pace bitches, space
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:02 PM ^
Define "Michigan fan." There's no way 29% of people who actually know what's going on with our football program are "unsure" about Brady Hoke's quality.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
Perhaps the some of the 53% that are unsure of Beilein are Michigan football fans and don't follow basketball.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
I would offer you my opinion, but first can you please tell me who this "Brady Hoke" fellow is?
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:05 PM ^
I'd like to know how closely they follow football.
EDIT: Beaten to the punch by Magnum P.I. It's like the '80s all over again...
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:04 PM ^
Nobody asked me anything.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:32 PM ^
Is your pic a subtle reference to Junior?
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:05 PM ^
Interesting that both McCain and Obama voters favor Michigan in ratios much greater than the 37-31 overall split.
So...sparty fans don't vote or they vote for Ron Paul?
Re: Hoke, I understand if people are unsure but how do 6% of them disapprove? Blows my mind.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:17 PM ^
Michigan fans vote way more than State fans do apparently. Raise your hand if you're surprised.
I also like the split of college football apathy between republican and democratic voters. Again, not exactly earth-shattering news here, but interesting to see actual numbers put to it: 87% of republican voters had allegiance to Michigan or MSU, but only 67% of democratic voters did. Granted, some of those who choose neither are college football fans who have an allegiance to an out-of-state school, but most are probably people who don't care about college football.

February 22nd, 2012 at 5:06 PM ^
Who are they polling?
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:07 PM ^
Who are unsure and disapprove are on drugs. There is absolutely no reason to dislike what is going on right now. I may be narrow minded, but not an idiot, like a certain percentage of people seem to be. That is all.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:08 PM ^
Did they do a similar pole in Ohio. Is Urban at, what, 112% approval rating? And -10% disapproval?
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:19 PM ^
Given Ohio's primary is a week later, on Super Tuesday, I would expect PPP to get in the field in Ohio. I believe Quinnipiac's tested sports in Ohio, too, specifically amid the Tressel scandal.
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:35 PM ^
Here's one comparison: PPP did an Ohio poll in October 2011 that found that 78% of Buckeye fans approved of the job Tressel did as coach and only 12% disapproved. (This was obviously after he resigned.)
February 22nd, 2012 at 10:03 PM ^
ok, that explains it.
14% of michigan fans dont like hoke cuz he wasn't lyin and cheatin enough to win like the Vest did.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:17 PM ^
You can't please all of the people all of the time. 64% might be the equivalent of 100%.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:19 PM ^
At least we know how to spell our coach's name right.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:19 PM ^
I'll give these numbers four FAKEs out of five.

64 PERCENT,WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? Michigan went 11-2 in his first year and beat ohio!!!
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:31 PM ^
"Voters for Obama in 2008 are slightly more inclined to favor Michigan. Of Obama voters, 40 percent favor Michigan, 27 percent favor Sparty. Of McCain voters, Michigan still leads, at 53 percent, followed by Sparty at 34 percent."
Wha?
Obama: 40 - 27 = 13% more pro-M
McCain: 53 - 34 = 19% more pro-M
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:42 PM ^
Another trend I found looking at the tabulated results was the more liberal your political ideology the more likely you are to answer not sure/unkown.
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:12 PM ^
The left-of-center people whom I know are generally less interested in sports than the right-of-center people.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:32 PM ^
There are more Michigan fans in Michigan than state fans. Color me shocked.
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:43 PM ^
the idiots that can't make up their mind over these easy questions?
February 22nd, 2012 at 5:51 PM ^
Who are these people? They must be the negative of the negative - people who would dispparove of receiving a million dollar lottery prize because they'd have to pay a bunch of taxes on it. Sheesh!
February 22nd, 2012 at 6:27 PM ^
I would have to assume they are opposed to football and thus Hoke. They must be "fans" of Michigan in the sense they are fans of the law school. Otherwise, I do not get it.
