Rivals 2013 Hoops Commitments Update - Taco

Submitted by Naked Bootlegger on

Rivals** has added Taco Charlton to our 2013 hoops commitment list. This is probably just a formality since Taco was on the Rivals hoops recruit list. Ace did mention that he had a strong hoops skill set in his official recruiting profile.

**This is non-paywall Rivals content.

I'm pretty sure that Taco would only count as a scholarship for football and would be considered a walk-on as far as basketball is concerned.

That said, I don't know if we'll need him vs. spending more time on football.

Scholarships carry over. He would also take up a scholarship spot on the basketball team. I remember during our kicker troubles last year we had Justin Meram (soccer player) come kick for a little while and the issue with putting him in the game was that his soccer scholarship would have carried over and he would have taken up a football spot.

An athlete on scholarship for soccer can't play on the football team without taking up a football scholarship spot, but the reverse is not true. You can be on a football scholarship and play other sports, such as track or basketball, without taking up a scholarship spot. The NCAA put this rule in place to prevent teams from manipulating the system to stock their football teams with more than the maximum number of scholarship players.

There was a recent football recruit (Zach Banner) who also wants to basketball in college, and he had talked to Beilein about playing basketball at U-M while on a football scholarship. He wouldn't have counted against Michigan's allotment of basketball scholarships.

My understanding is the football scholarships trump all other scholarships and basketball scholarships trump everything but football.  So Taco could play for Beilen without issue and Burke could play for Berelson without issue, but Burke couldn't play for Brady unless we had a football scholarship open.

I thought that same thing, but I have seen absolutely nothing about him playing on the offensive side of the ball.

His basketball skills apparently make him pretty good in coverage out of the LB position he plays in high school.  If he adds 30-40lbs, he could end up as a prototypical SDE for this defense.

I'd be a little more interested to see what Dennis Norfleet could do at the point.  With Stu and Zack leaving next year, grit is going to come at a premium.
