Quick Donovan Warren Question

Submitted by UM Indy on
If I'm remembering correctly, it was kind of unexpected that Warren committed to us, right? We thought we had some other big time defensive back and that Warren was USC bound? Was it RoJo - and when he committed to USC that's when Warren decided to come to UM? Just trying to remember the details. Thanks.

Was primarily a db recruit for Michigan. He was recruited for either at USC. He was supposedly coming here. As I recall RoJoMom created a fair amount of controvesy in his recruitment. In the last days of his recruitment, there was doubt about his M lock, and at his circus he picked the USC hat. Just after or just before, D. Warren committed to Michigan. He was recruited as a DB by Michigan, and USC. He was expected to go to USC. It was largley considered a wash in talent. I'd say we definitely got the better in the brains department though.

USC was recruiting RoJo on the premise that he could play WR or CB, IIRC. Obviously, he is playing WR for them. Michigan was looking at him for CB only, I thought.

Ronald Johnson was supposedly heavily favoring Michigan (I believe as a WR, because I remmeber all the OMG MALLET ROJO hype) and Donovan Warren was considered a USC lock. Warren surprisingly committed to Mich and then RoJo unfortunately chose USC. Then both players proceeded to participate in two of the most monumental upsets in football history their freshman year.

The ROJO fiasco is one for the books... He had allegedly committed to UM(just to the coaches/secretly), but word leaked and he freaked. He commits to USC, and 2? days later DW commits to us. and then BooBoo became the first commit of the 2008 class a couple days after as well(some say he committed b/c ROJO didn't......speculation?)

I would have to go back and look to be sure but I think the general opinion from ND fans was that UM coaches really messed up his recruitment at the end. Johnson's mom and high school coach were looking for a clear plan for him at UM and thought they were given the run around and subsequently Johnson decided very quickly on usc as a result.
