The "Five of Diamond's" theory

Submitted by michelin on

On the scout board, there is an interesting discussion of Diamond’s apparent statement that he will “shock the world” tomorrow.   Is it bad news or is it a reference to the Fab Five (offensive line commitments at UM, if he comes).

I call this the “Five of Diamond’s” theory (ie the theory that Diamond  was referrring to the (Fab) FIve when he said he would shock the world.).   And if he picks UM, I will give him Michelin's FIve Diamonds award.

__________

SCOUT BOARD

“Sam Webb interviewed Hoke yesterday at the WTKA Signing Day Extravaganza. And Webb asked Hoke about the possibility of landing any more kids. Hoke replied something like "a Texas sized piece and an Alaska sized piece". To me that says he means two large players. So obviously the staff is holding out hope for landing either or both of these kids.

Unfortunately I'm starting to get a feeling we land neither. Think I read on ******* last night that Jordan Diamond tweeted he's going to shock the world. Well going to Michigan will not shock anybody. So it would have to be a team people hardly expected him to go to. So that puts Auburn,Wisconsin and who knows? maybe even something crazy like OHIO. “

“Could it be that Diamond is referencing the fab five when Juwan Howard said they were gonna "shock the world"? He was also another Chicago boy. Diamond is going blue and Kozan is going Auburn... Book it.”

“I hope that's what he meant.”

A poster on the r*ivals board also takes the statement as a reference to the "Fab FIve" and believes that it is not only a good omen for UM.   As a member of a school that competes with UM, he regrets that it is now a foregone conclusion that Diamond will pick UM.”

“I thought something similar.... But he has kept things so close to the vest it is hard to really get a feel.”

“I think you're spot on here”

”He has been coy. But he also said at the beginning he was going to go thru the process. He took all his officials and yet he has been to UM like 6 times. I think this is a kid who was always going blue, yet he wanted to enjoy the trips plus get some exposure for his boys at Simeon High.”

pessimistic here, but don't you think Diamond is a little young to be throwing around Fab Five references? The Fab Five wasn't even at full strength at UM the year he was born.

Although, I will say the 30 for 30 def. shot up their popularity recently, I just don't think that phrase is commonplace with 18 years olds.  Of course, when you're 12 years old in '92 and in a basketball league, wearing your shorts half off your ass and black socks - "shock the world" is a phrase you don't soon forget.

While I don't normally chime in on recruiting speculation, I would venture a guess that the Fab 5 are still well-known & popular.  If Mr. Diamond had been pointed towards Michigan history at all during his 6 or so visits to campus, I could imagine him relating to their story & becoming attached & enthusiastic about his part in sculpting the future of Michigan.

Anyway, fingers crossed!

I think kids know about the Fab Five in general, but unless Howard and Diamond went to the same high school, I feel iffy about Diamond knowing the reference. Chicago is a big place and Diamond is a young guy.

Man oh man, here's to hoping, though.

No, man, I'm pretty sure he got it. We all got it- the theory was well-explained in your OP. For what it's worth, I think if he commits to M, then yes, you're right on. And if not, no, just a coincidence. It doesn't much change my opinion of the probability of him committing. Well, perhaps a tenth of a percent.

He's going to shock the world by picking Michigan because everyone will expect him to shock the world by picking someone else, and therefor, be shocked.

I need a break.

I've read on the FB group that our chances with Diamond are decreasing. One guy posted " Steve on 24/7 Blue Board, he is hearing that Michigan is fading with Diamond."

I'm assuming he means Steve Wilfong. Another guy said he read TomVH said the same thing. Not too sure what to think.

They meaning the Facebook posters? I assume they read the posts from Steve and Tom.

They meaning Steve and Tom? They're both recruiting guys in the Midwest, so I assume they have some sort of insight into this. I really don't know much myself, just relaying information I've read.

I suppose the obvious answer is that they talked to someone who talked to Diamond or talked to Diamond himself...It's one thing when Sam Webb says he has a gut feeling, because that means that the kid told him he is going to Michigan, but I always think it's strange in these close-call situations when people start saying that one team is fading or leading.  That said, I'm trying to impose way too much rigor on this.

I think it probably is too close. I really have no idea, your guess is as good as mine which might be as good as Steve's, Tom's, and Sam's at this point. I'm just hoping he comes here. I found this, thought it might be something worth posting.

I can confirm that the latest talk has been negative regarding Diamond.  I have no idea what's going on with Kozan.  If Diamond was so interested in Michigan, he wouldn't have dragged his feet for this long and would already be a part of the class.

I wont both him and Kozan but jeez I ma getting worn out reading, sleeping, thinking, hearing rumors about all these kids and 2012 is over in recruiting for the most part. Honestly if he is gonna shock the world it isnt U of M i I am sorry everyone in the world who knows anything about the situation knows U of M would not even be close to a shock. So either way we find out tomorrow and I hope it is going blue.

Both been getting on my nerves lately...so far every recruit who 'has been a Mich lean' has gone somewhere else.I've learned if it takes em forever to decide they aren't coming.

I think we get neither Diamond nor Kozan and I'm okay with that. I'd rather they commit, but the buzz seems to suggest they're both going elsewhere. Hopefully it's to another conference if they don't go to Michigan.

It is his school Chicago Simeon's and he is announcing with his teammates. So you are completely off base and probably shouldn't be bad mouthing a kid that every UM fan and poster on this board REALLY wants unless you know what the hell you are talking about.
