Ondre Pipkins is upset with Josh Garnett
According to Ondre Pipkins Twitter, he's pretty upset with Josh Garnett this evening. He feels he was lied to, and that is pretty much a direct quote. Obviously we don't know what was said to Ondre, but we can guess he thought it meant Garnett was definitely blue.

Note: I thought this deserved a thread of its own, because the Garnett thread was getting quite long.

I think a couple of years ago, there were a few different places to go to read and chat about Michigan sports. That structure served the purpose of letting people sort themselves into the online community that best fit them and the writer who most impressed them. Now, Brian and co. have done such a great job around here that this is where virtually everyone goes for Michigan sports. In a lot of ways, that's great. The downside is that the distinction between MGoBlog and, say, Mlive, as an online community has blurred.
That might be arrogant, and if it offends I'm sorry, but it has been a noticeable, depressing trend to me.

Mr. Mario, please pass 10th grade english before you post again.

who makes Ondre mad....grrrrr >=(
That being said, all the best to Josh. It sounds like it was close and I can't really blame him for picking Stanford. He sounds like a good kid and only wish him the best.

I'm sure Ondre has a good reason to be upset. As a fan, I'm pretty disappointed and I had no "inside" information like Ondre may have had. Garnett did numerous pro-UM interviews and made multiple comments that inferred he was leaning towards UM, that we know. Most of the people that followed his recruitment and waited patiently for him to announce are UM fans. So building up a bunch of suspense among UM fans and then announcing Stanford stings a bit. I'll reserve my wishes of good luck for those in Maize & Blue.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:17 PM ^
For some reason I don't think this is a done deal..But if it is, good luck.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:18 PM ^
None of us have any right to be angry at the kid, we never said UM was his leader, we said that ourselves. Pipkins on the other hand has a legitimate reason to be if GArnett told him that he was coming here and now isn't. I wonder what Magnuson's reaction was seeing their back and forth tweets.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:19 PM ^
I love OP's passion for Michigan. This kid will do great things, and become a leader for us on d-fense.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:28 PM ^
He basically insulted Michigan's academics by having a Stanford Medicine and Michigan Football shirt as his options.
While Michigan is a great football school, we are first and foremost a world class academic institution. His shirts implied that he would go to Michigan only for football, and Stanford mostly for academics. That is low and aside from Ohio, he is my enemy #1.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:31 PM ^
Grow up.

<br>Stop acting like Ohio fans mgobloggers.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:37 PM ^
I'm from Oregon and went to Michigan for undergrad. When you think elite academics on the West Coast, it's pretty much Stanford and UC-Berkeley. Michigan is a great school, a Public Ivy, but still a state school. An M degree plays very well in New York or Chicago, but out West, a Stanford degree is just as impressive as one from Harvard.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:43 PM ^
I hope you are kidding, because I missed the s/ tag. I seriously hope you are joking.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:04 PM ^
no /s tag...Neg away...
The shirts were not M Football and S Football, and that's the insult. If he choose Stanford because of fit/ closeness to home... whatever, but it's a criticism of M's academics and ability to send students to an awesome grad school
M academics > M football.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:15 PM ^
Yeah I'm not sure he intended it as a shot at Michigan's academics, but to not put football on both shirts or academics on both shirts was the issue.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:32 PM ^
I didnt neg you. I thought you were a bit harsh with enemy number 1. i dont think he meant it as an insult. Most people dont understand how hard Michigan is until they get in. I am from NYC and trust me, i wasnt prepared for how hard it is when you get in. Michigan wasnt my first choice.
From his interviews, i had my worries about what he thought of our education level. I also think he knew how good we were academically. he didnt eliminate us because educationally, we are top ranked. Its not like you saw Bama shirt up there.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:51 PM ^
His shirts were Stanford Medicine and Michigan Football.
To hell with anyone who does not respect our academics more so than someone who doesn;t respect our football team.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:40 PM ^
When he said he wanted to go play at a school with nice weather I started getting worried. Stanford is beautiful and so are the chicas.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:40 PM ^
Wow. You'd think people would rather just let it go and move on, than end up on an 11 Warrior or RCMB thread as a reverse case of schadenfreude. Not that it has, but our reaction to situations like this can provide them with ammo.
January 26th, 2012 at 9:53 PM ^
PeeWee following in the footsteps of his Mentor Lamarr Woodley...Another mean S.O.B.! Can't wait...
January 26th, 2012 at 9:55 PM ^
Hard to get mad and fault a kid for choosing Stanford. He is one of the few recruits who said academics is a big part of his decision, and you can see that's true from his final three schools. Best of luck to him and his endeavors. Let's all be adults, move on, and focus on the good recruiting class we have so far. We'll add a few more good pieces. Go Blue!
January 26th, 2012 at 10:01 PM ^
Good luck to Josh Garnett in all of his pursuits, would've been great to see him and Magnusson knocking fools around, but he made his choice and we can either be happy for the kid or act like classless Buckeye fans ala Kyle Kalis.
January 27th, 2012 at 1:53 AM ^
We shouldn't be classless Buckeye fans. Death threats and ill-wishes have no place here.
I just disagree that the way Kalis handled his recruitment was the same, however. Kalis may have played it close at some points, but he was always honest. Garnett messed around a great deal more, I think.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:04 PM ^
but taking someone else's (whom you don't even know) choice of school personally is...well, think about it, it's kind of dumb.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:13 PM ^
We still have a good shot with Armani Reeves and Diamond. Can't win all the battles.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:33 PM ^
I won't ever fault a kid for choosing a school like Stanford. That being said, I hope Ondre gets plenty of chances during his careee to tweet something to Garnett from the Rose Bowl while Garnett is sitting in his dorm room.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:41 PM ^
FWIW Magnuson apologized to UM fans on twitter for not being able to get Garnett to Go Blue and additionally I hope O.P. and the rest of this class are classy enough not to stoop to gloating to Garnett if Stanford isn't as successful as it's been in the past while he's there. The kid went to Stanford for an EDUCATION, which is what all of these kids come to school for.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:00 PM ^
Pretty sure there are a lot of kids that use college as a stepping stone to the NFL and choose their schools accordingly. If this wasn't a truth you wouldn't hear about kids taking scheme, position, and early playing time into consideration.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:47 PM ^
Would have liked to see him Go Blue, but can't deny that Stanford is an elite university with great weather and a good football program. It ain't Michigan, but it it's still a good choice.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:49 PM ^
January 26th, 2012 at 11:12 PM ^
omg thanks for being you!
(yes. I saw your tweet@Ondre Pipkins)
January 26th, 2012 at 10:56 PM ^
I, for one, will not be a big fan of his going forth. I'm above wishing him harm and what he does at Stanford matters very little to me, but losing out on him (if PeeWee's indications are true) reminds me of the "respecr for the program" considerations that made me less upset when Pharaoh Brown was removed after visiting Oregon.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:58 PM ^
Optimus PeeWee Prime @PeeWee9456
@IamJoshG bro u told me on ur visit you were going Blue Wat happened???
January 26th, 2012 at 11:00 PM ^
Good for Ondre!
January 26th, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
Well that sums it up.
January 26th, 2012 at 10:59 PM ^
If he wanted my well-wishes, he would have gone to Michigan. I'm sure kids know when they pick one school that they are letting down other fan bases. He doesn't need me to wish him well. He has Stanford fans to do that now. Personally, I'd love to see him flop. I root against kids that don't pick M. Dee Hart, please join Garnett in flopdome.
You can say: "It's just a game." Yes, yes it is. Which is why it shouldn't be so bad that I wish a lack of success in the game on the kid.
You can say: "He's just a kid." Meh, he can buy ciggs and fight for the country. These young men choose the spotlight for better and worse.
I don't wish him any serious harm or an unproductive future. But I do wish him a lack of production on the football field. I'm sure his Stanford degree will open doors either way.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:36 PM ^
I completely agree with this. It's a completely unpopular sentiment around here, because for whatever reason MGoBlog has decided it needs to go overboard in being the bigger person. I don't want to be the OSU or MSU fan that hopes for torn ACLs or arrests or personal failures, but if a kid doesn't pick my school I hope he sucks at football, plain and simple.
He can be a great kid and he can go on to become a great physician or whatever else he decides to do with his lige, but I hope he sucks at playing football for spurning us. As a fan I believe every kid we want should pick us, and if he doesn't - that's his decision - but I hope the rest of his football career sucks really hard and I don't feel bad about that.
I will never with phyical or emotional harm on a kid, and I will never wish ill on his 'real" life, i.e. his academics or professional success. If Josh Garnett picked Stanford over Michigan because of the academics, well I still think that's a load of bull, but that's all right, I hope he gets great grades. But from a football stand point, I can't say the same, and that doesn't make me a bad person or an asshole fan.
Lastly, I think all the interviews and tweets he sent that were M related now seem tainted in my eyes. I didn't think he was one of the attention craved kids at the time because I truly thought he wanted to come here. Now it looks like that was him pandering to the one finalist he had that actually has football fans.
So, Josh Garnett, I'm sorry you picked Stanford over Michigan, but if somehow our teams see each other on the field, I hope Ondre Pipkins eats you for lunch, in a terrible and embarassing way.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:42 PM ^
Well said. And I guess I got downvoted but whatever I agree with you.
Sometimes this board can go a little overboard with the "we are classier than thou OSU and MSU" schtick. It really comes off more and more as insecurity rather than confidence. If Michigan Men are the leaders and best we need not be reminded why we're not Sparty or OSU constantly, unless some of you are unsure.
All in all it's funny the same people that can disrespect a man's funeral can post in this thread and say we must wish this kid well. Only on the internets...
January 27th, 2012 at 1:52 AM ^
Kid has been outed as a liar. Coincidentally, same kid probably won't get to be in the ESPN spotlight if he isn't lying.
I seem to agree with you guys, I see no point or desire in wishing him well. I certainly wish this young man no harm, but I'm definitely going to laugh real hard every time Pipkins runs Garnet over in the Rose Bowl (assuming Stanford doesnt take the much predicted dive to mediocrity).
January 27th, 2012 at 2:23 AM ^
Of you well said.
January 27th, 2012 at 7:12 AM ^
Then came the last few years. I'm so over that. I think he made the wrong decision. I hope his quarterback spends a lot of time on his back.
Lige - typo, or Freudian slip?
January 27th, 2012 at 8:57 AM ^
Hoping for him to have a bad carer is essentially hoping for him to have emotional turmoil. A kid with this kind of size, talent, and recruiting hype undoubtedly realizes there's a chance for him to make it to the NFL and make millions of dollars. If he doesn't achieve that or if he doesn't even become a good college player, he's almost certainly going to be very frustrated and perhaps depressed about how his football career pans out.
Personally, I hope he has a good career and finds success in football. But if Michigan meets Stanford in the Rose Bowl, then I obviously hope Michigan wins.
January 27th, 2012 at 1:26 AM ^
i wish them well and hope they have success. unless they play us. cause anything do doesn't effect issue. unless they play us. but i hope we meet them in the rose bowl and pip smashes him.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:15 PM ^
Ondre asked shittu to direct message him. Hm is he recruiting him? I sure hope so
January 26th, 2012 at 11:20 PM ^
Admittedly I'm disappointed, though I'm certainly trying to not get too worked up about the college decision of a 17- or 18-year-old guy. He's going to Stanford, so I'm moving on, wishing him well, and hoping for the best with Diamond, Grant, Kozan, and Reeves.
That being said, with all this talk comparing the academics of these schools, I think it's about time we make some T-shirts saying "STANFORD: THE MICHIGAN OF THE WEST"!
January 26th, 2012 at 11:25 PM ^
See my post in the Garnett decision post. They must be the Michigan of the west. Except Stanford has a top flight school nearby in Berkely and we dominate a stretch of land from A2 to Austin.
January 26th, 2012 at 11:24 PM ^
Here is my theory on what is going on with these tweets:
- Pipkins makes his tweet "Uhh ohhh we got a big commit comin in jus call me kay jewlwers hint hint" which actually refers to Jordan Diamond.
- His tweet is a little too obvious so Diamond is not happy about it. Pipkins really shouldn't have revealed JD's comittment.
- Pipkins uses the Garnett decision to throw us off the trail about Diamond, and in the process repair his relationship with JD. By seeming upset at Garnett, who he never thought was comitting, he given JD back his cover.
January 27th, 2012 at 12:13 AM ^
Pee Wee knows that a Garnett stone can be bought at Kay Jewelers, like the majority of Americans.
January 27th, 2012 at 1:12 AM ^
All I know is that out of all the recruits I'm excited for, Ondre Pipkins is probably at the top of the list.
