They are far enough away from each other that a college student might as well go to Michigan. It's not like he's going to have enough time to travel to see her on the weekends. I think this logic is flawed.

Irvine and Palo Alto are like 350 miles away. It's not like they'd be neighbors.

Irvine is far enough from Palo Alto that it barely qualifies as being in the same state. Detroit and Chicago are significantly closer together, for example.

Notice how they keep talking about prospects looking at the sames schools on ESPNU. They're all considering Alabama, Auburn, and Florida State rather than prospects looking at the midwestern schools.
