This is why I love twitter. I can follow all my teams very easily, even ones that are never on the radio or television.

Do the same thing on Sunday
January 13th, 2012 at 10:02 PM ^
Quick question.
So I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to hockey recruiting, etc. But how does Michigan stack up in line with other powers? Do we have pipelines? Is it more internationally slanted so it is harder to build those in roads? Also, it seems like Red Berenson likes the smaller quicker players as opposed to the bigger players (like North Dakots from last year.) I know we seem to recruit well, but I just do not know as much about it as basketball and football. Thanks.
January 13th, 2012 at 10:09 PM ^
Traditionally it's been very good. We've had some issues lately with guys bailing early or not making it to campus and playing in the OHL instead. Our major pipeline is the National Development team, which is based in Ann Arbor.
The last couple years have probably featured the least talented (particularly offensively) Michigan teams in 20 years. They're still good, but we're no longer obviously the most talented team in the CCHA.

In terms of hardware, Michigan is one of the premier programs in all of college hockey. We hold the top spot for National Titles with 9, largely due to our golden age in the late 40s & early 50s, during which we won 6 titles within the first decade in which NCAA title were available.
Things took a downturn in the 60s & 70s, but with the arrival of the Red Baron in the 80s, things have turned around. We've won 2 National Titles and a whole pile of CCHA regular season & playoff championships while not missing the playoffs in two decades. It's been a bit tougher the last couple years, including a miracle CCHA tournament run to keep the playoff streak alive, but we played in the Title game last year and are right in the playoff mix again this season.

Every year we have probably a top 3 or top 5 recruiting class. Every single year. It's not that uncommon for us to have more NHL draft picks in a single class than our opposing teams do on their whole team
Collegehockey247 / rivals attempted to do a star rating sort of thing a year or two ago and they assigned us like three 5 stars and two 4 stars all in the top 50. Given their rankings may be a bit arbitrary
Next year we have Jacob Trouba coming in who's almost certain to be a top 10 pick (i.e. he's almost certainly the highest draft pick in the NCAA) and then Boo Nieves who's a late 1st/early 2nd type of guy. Even though Jared Rutledge (our goalie commit) is ranked 36 of 36 north american skaters, I have to think that's still good for a top 5-10 goalie in the 2012 ncaa class
So basically, we recruit well, although as noted above, we've lacked elite offensive talent lately but we almost always have elite defensive talent (JMFJ, Summers, Mitera, Merrill, Trouba, etc)

Glad Michigan finally pounded these overrated, uneducated imbociles.
The thing that made me laugh was the game tonight has been their only near sellout of the year.
Granted they play in a large, gloomy cave-like arena that would be hard to fill for college teams, but they actually had near 10,000 tonight if the BTN announcer was correct. The ONLY reason that there were that many people there, is because they were playing Michigan.
And you know what the best part is? The ohio fans who were there that don't follow their hockey program, think they're STILL a mess of a program and suck.
As for the game sunday, ohio has a big Top-10 matchup with indiana in basketball so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more Michigan fans in cleveland than ohio fans.
Beat ohio's ass on sunday, restore order and take the trophy home to Ann Arbor.
GO BLUE!!
January 13th, 2012 at 10:43 PM ^
bitches. Looking forward to Sunday. My fear is they don't sell the thing out out and we're dragged down by association with their mediocre asses.
January 13th, 2012 at 11:03 PM ^
In the nation. There is no way. I just got back from the game and we out hustled them, frustrated them and were the faster to the puck team tonight. We still need to do better on our power play but overall we owned them the whole night! Awesome win and I can wait until Sunday! GO BLUE! Hunwick was on fire tonight!!!
January 13th, 2012 at 11:05 PM ^
the quietest 47 shots I've ever seen.
Hunny truly made 4 or 5 saves.

Good to see UM start off the weekend with a win. It is a rough stretch ahead, but wins like these make it far less scary. Now just need to win tonight to make it a good weekend.
