OT - Demar Dorsey back to his hometown
With GRCC folding it's football program, Dorsey's former coach believes Demar is back in Florida planning to attend a JC in the Fort Lauderdale area, his hometown. This worries me about his non-football future, but hopefully he can stay away from the people who got him into trouble in the first place. It's certainly going to be far tougher to block out the bad influences down there compared to GR.

This is too bad, I don't know alot about his situation, but it sounded like he was trying to get away from the bad influences in his life and steer himself in a better direction. Hopefully he can maintain his focus and do something good with his life. Best of luck to him.

Hope he improved his grades enough to get headin' back to a D1 school.
I still say he'd be a good fit with RR out in AZ if he isn't taken by UofM.

There comes a point in everyone's life that he/she must make a decision that will sit with them for the rest of their life. He is now a grown man and must make those decisons for himself. He has now had some time away from the troubles of his youth. If he chooses to go back to that place and associate with those same kids then obviously he has no desire to be a better person. If he returns home and chooses a path without those same people then he as grown up. I wish him the best, but he now has to make that choice. Good luck to him.

there'd be very few problems in the world. It's one thing to have an opportunity, but it is a whole other thing to have a support system in place to help you make the most of an opportunity.
I agree with the basic premise, but the sentiment usually inherent in these statments tends to overlook the systemic, systematic, and social detriments of poverty.

The problem is that simple. I am a product of it. I had a choice to either be just like people who raised me or the family in which I was born or I could use the given opportunity that I was dealt and make something of myself. I am not saying that it doesn't help to have a support system, but he can break the trend that it appears he was headed for when he was younger. He now has had an opportunity and I am going to assume a support system from GRCC. I was able to succeed with very little support system and I was a sure fire bet to end up in trouble. Hence, I made a choice to become the person I am today and not go back to what was expected of myself.

May not be that simple. Hopefully he does well, but no matter what he does, you can't know what his level of "desire too be a better person" is.

Dorsey's inability to get into Michigan was an academic issue, not a matter of his juvenile criminal record. Right?
I know that Drew Sharp and Mick McCabe wanted to turn it into a 'character' issue because, naturally, that allowed the two of them to continue the discussion in the Freep's favorite direction, which was to spread any controversy onto Rich Rodriguez.
Actually, we might not get a simple answer to this, inasmuch as FERPA mostly denies all of us any opportunity to look at the academic record ourselves. It of course didn't stop the Free Press from sending its crack team of football investigative reporters to Ft. Lauderdale to get what they could get hands on, which were the incomplete juvenile court records. And thereby make judgments about the story with half (or less) of the relevant database.

oh bullshit... quit feeling sorry and/or sympathy for those who don't deserve to play here. dorsey does not.. and he was a criminal. there are so many other worthy players who CHOSE not to act like dorsey has. if you want to be msu, then keep wanting guys like dorsey.

ENOUGH WITH YOUR FREEP OBSESSION. Haven't you been scolded by the boss of this here blog and told to cease and desist from this crap in the future? Regardless of why he was or wasn't allowed to enroll at Michigan, it's impossible to deny Dorsey's documented troubles with the law as a juvenille. I think many of us took interest in Demar the person and were happy to see him (apparently) getting himself straightened out by moving away from the negative influences and settling in at GRCC. I am concerned those steps in the right direction could be undone by this move back home.

Did you not just (try to) turn a conversation about a person's well being into another tired attempt at lambasting the freep for RR's fate? And did Brian not explicitly state back in December that such debates are played out and no longer welcome here?

Best of luck to him.. Sidenote I read a post on another board about him I couldn't believe the racism... Glad we have a little bit more class here.
I wish the best for the young man I know I was at Michigan and wanted to be closer to home (the hood, DC) and so I transferred to Georgetown. I was flunking all of my classes, skipping school, hanging with the wrong crowd, so I called Michigan and asked if I could come back and they let me in. Fortunately I was able to graduate from M.
I hope he's better than me at resisting peer pressure and temptation at that age.

Michigan, ultimately, passed on him. We don't traditionally take JUCO transfers. He never played a down for Michigan, and he's never going to. It's time we stopped caring so much.

Question: Is every person who applies to attend the University and gets rejected by Admissions also considered "part of the Michigan family?"
