247 Has Shane Morris #2 QB 5*

I'll take him!
January 10th, 2012 at 5:12 PM ^
I kinda wish he wasn't such a highly rated prospect so early. It's going to be hard for him to stay humble.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:37 PM ^
Just because he is an initial five-star, it will be tough to stay humble? If you do not know Shane personally, I think this is a completely unnecessary comment. To question the kid's heart and character without even knowing him is pretty ridiculous. From all accounts we have seen, Shane is constantly working on his game both during the season, and in the offseason, and I don't know why this would change just becuase he is a five-star prospect. On what basis will it be hard for him to stay humble? If anything it is good for both Shane and Michigan to have such a highly rated quarterback locked up in this class, which will allow him and the coaching staff to lure other highly touted prospects to Ann Arbor. I completely disagree with your view, and I think it is irresponsible to suggest that Michigan has recruited a kid that would have a lack of motivation based on his ranking.

That was one big straw man.

I'm with Jim here. I think everyone is being too critical of aaamichfan. He is merely hoping that the 5 star rankings and all the media attention will not go to Shane's head. He never said he thought it would or that the media attention will get to Shane. Aaamichfan is not actually criticizing Shane's character. From what we have heard Shane is a great kid, but a kid nonetheless, who is going to have the world of college football hounding him and telling him how great he is. From what it sounds like, he will be abe to handle it fine, but if he gets a big head and doesn't put the work in to be a successful QB, then we could be really crippled by it. We aren't getting a QB this year, and if Gardner doesn't get his RS and Bellomy doesn't develop then Shane will be our starter as a true sophomore. Losing him would cripple our depth just like losing Justin Turner did, a 5 star who thought he was too talented to put the time in. Plenty of 5 stars recruited by Michigan have not panned out and they have not been the most humble guys (Mallet [he was good but most probably would have thought he had more talent than he utilized] and Campbell).
Here is a link to the whole Florida debacle with their 5 star defensive players not showing up to practice and threatening to transfer: http://www.alligator.org/sports/football/article_380a213c-b07e-11df-bee7-001cc4c03286.html. They even compared themselves to the Big Three of the Miami Heat. As much as I like following recruting, it seems to be getting out of hand. The NCAA should crack down on recruiting also, but they won't. Relax and let's recognize that Shane seems to be a great kid and hopefully will represent the University of Michigan well in all regards.

By all accounts, he is a good kid. However, there is still another 1.5 years until he hits campus, and he has already has old men basically offering the sexual services of their daughters to him. Even the most grounded kids are susceptible to too much hype, and I don't see it ever being a good thing for development.
January 10th, 2012 at 6:01 PM ^
I guess we can agree to disagree. Being a highly touted recruit doesn't mean a kid isn't going to stay humble. I guess it was hard for Dorial Green-Beckham and Jonathan Gray to stay humble this year when they were initial fiv-stars as well. All they did was go out their senior years and break national records. I don't see why it is necessary to suggest that he won't stay humble if you don't know the kid personally. I do not know him either, and I'm not saying he will stay humble, but I just think suggesting this is unnecessary. And to me, the most important thing here is that it's a good thing to have a five-star qb in this class that the coaches can sell to other top recruits, as well as having Shane personally recruit himself. I just don't see how it is a bad thing, that's all I'm saying. This could also be a good thing, because he could feel like he has to live up to that five-star rating, and will work that much harder to prove to everyone that he is worthy of that honor. I just think it was an irresponsible suggestion, that's all.

With drewro on this one, plus aaamich I still remember your childish jokes about the Penn State scadal, so what you say is pretty much pointless.
Mike Jones Who?

How's the weather there in Bolivian?

I interviewed Shane the other day and once I post it, I think you may change your mind. An incredibly impressive kid for somebody his age and in his position.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:15 PM ^
to play devil's advocate, Lebron James said all the right things too...
January 11th, 2012 at 12:29 AM ^
He was a great example of a humble star working towards winning a championship UNTIL he went to Miami. No one could really criticize LBJ that much until the move to Miami. And he was hyped like crazy since he was what, 14.
I agree that in the past 2 years he's become a prima donna, but I don't think the hype from a young age drove him to become the man he is.

Take your pick:

I'll take the one on the far right please.
Thanks.

Tim Tebow asks Shane Morris to pray for him.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:46 PM ^
I still understand where he's coming from, though. Even if he's the most humble kid in the country, he will have to get adjusted to increased media attention over the next year, and that can get to any kid's head. But I agree with you in the sense that I don't think character will be an issue. Not to say that Hoke's recruits are all going to be comprised of goodie goodie eagle scouts, but I don't think Hoke would have extended an offer if there were questions in Shane's character.
Besides, given the amount of recruiting Shane does for the school on his own, its easy to tell he loves this school, and already feels a part of it. I have little reason to worry about him at this moment in time.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:56 PM ^
He wants to be #1 so this is extra motivation.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:12 PM ^
He is already the #2 QB and #12 overall. Rated a 4* and if he keeps that ranking, will project to a 5*.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:14 PM ^
IF YOU AIN'T FIRST YOU'RE LAST! Unacceptable Shane.

247 that the OP is talking about, not Rivals.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:42 PM ^
He's probably saying that Rivals better rank him high and soon. He's still unranked on Rivals - not that it matters to me

Kevin Olsen, apparentely, according to Wilfongs twitter feed.
January 10th, 2012 at 10:03 PM ^
His other brother is Virginia QB. So I think that name recognition has something to do with his top rating.
January 10th, 2012 at 11:05 PM ^
how many of Olsen's games have you watched? dls games?
January 10th, 2012 at 5:20 PM ^
I've never met him, but I'm sure someone must know him.
January 10th, 2012 at 9:09 PM ^
Are you sure? Maybe he doesn't exist...
January 10th, 2012 at 5:24 PM ^
Who isn't as good as Morris in any way, shape, or form.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:44 PM ^
Of the three sites (scout, rivals, 247) with 2013 early rankings out, all have three different QBs at number 1 with some wide variability in the top 5 in terms of rankings. It's early.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:19 PM ^
For comparison, if Shane were in the 2012 class, his grade of 97 would make him the second best QB behind Gunner Kiel. The same Gunner Kiel who Shane allegedly out-performed in camps
January 10th, 2012 at 5:25 PM ^
I don't see how someone could be rated higher then him, I'll take 5 stars either way
January 10th, 2012 at 5:25 PM ^
I'll pass.

I can't wait until Shane Morrris comes even more now!
January 10th, 2012 at 5:46 PM ^
I'll take em.
He's made me a fan on the twitters already.
January 10th, 2012 at 5:49 PM ^
I hope that the hype around Shane Morris helps bring in some monster talent this year. I'd love for Michigan to start looking like it does in my Dynasties with all 5* recruits at every position.
January 10th, 2012 at 6:04 PM ^
I'm thinking the effect might come a little later once those Shane led teams really start to perform kids will want to come play with him
January 10th, 2012 at 6:02 PM ^
Hail Yea...Cant wait for this kid!
January 10th, 2012 at 6:10 PM ^
Gotta remember there is no money for the recruiting sites to agree with who they "think" is the best.
January 10th, 2012 at 7:22 PM ^
January 10th, 2012 at 9:32 PM ^
Congrats to Morris - can't wait for him to hit campus.
January 11th, 2012 at 3:10 AM ^
But as an MSU alum, I can say Morris is the most jealous I've been of a UM recruit in recent memory. I'm no talent expert, but in my novice opinion Morris has every tool needed to succeed as early as year 1. I watched his highlight tape, and the kid was making professional throws as a sophomore. Add on top of that the fact that he's a southpaw? If I had to put money on it, I'd say he has a shot (with hard work, obviously) to be the next 'Andrew Luck' as far as eventual draft hype goes.
