is this what you'd call the Marinovich experience? All kidding aside, I liked Tate's guts and efforts...just dropped the ball academically and that won't cut it...dang as said hope he's OK...wow.

but from a distance, he seems to have a very troubled personality.  He seems to have a very grandiose view of himself, almost to the point of thinking of himself in the 3rd person. (Jimmy played pretty well today, Jimmy doesn't eat meat, Jimmy is a vegetarian).  "I don't get nervous - "Tate doesn't get nervous."  Even in the San Jose State interview, it seemed as though he believed that his presence there has some sort of greater significance, that it was yet another Chapter in the life of Tate Forcier, like his own saga that he had created in his head.  Having a cursory yet adequately informed knowledge of some mental/emotional disorders (not from training but more from being from a family with a nice little cocktail of various "abnormalities"), it is a troubling characteristic.  He is also prone to making very brash and impulsive decisions based on anything resembling rejection or any interference with his self-perpetuated persona.  It is as though there may be two different, um, poles, at work, we will call them the north and the south, for purposes of continuing the double speak, and as if he is either at one or the other.

In any case, I also hope he make heads and tails out of the last few years and figure out that he may need some assistance in making sense of things right now.

thus my comment on the marinovich factor..what's crazy...when I was doing my undergrad we saw a film on everything Todd went through from precise medically stable foods to zero junk, to Russian eye specialists, to regimented strength training measured on force transducers...it was crazy...and then he went to USC and found out if a cheeseburger tastes this damn good...what the hell is cocaine like? not a pretty deal...the kid was a specemine but unfortunately went off the deep end...and once I found out the Forcier family was affiliated...I had a bad feeling. Again really liked the kid and hope he's OK but it sure doesn't bode well.

If you watch the recent ESPN film on Marinovich you can hear straight from the horse's mouth that all of the "kid who never tasted soda" stuff was blown way out of proportion by the media.

I know he wasn't an ideal citizen at Michigan, but I'll always root for him.  Hopefully there's some very good reason for this, though it's hard to imagine what it would be.

seems to be the theme of the day. Marinovich, Forcier, and even Henson all had their careers screwed up by parents who wanted to live vicariously through their kids and ended up being hyper-controlling. You have to let them live their own lives sooner or later.

Kinda of when you think "Hey I can set myself AND my parents up for the long term" knowing just how much they've spent on you in getting you to this point and how controlling they still were.

that seems to be the impression I got from the much-maligned Rosenburg article. Henson's dad wanted him to split time between baseball and football, and had him sign a contract early on, before he even started college. I could be wrong, and you DO have to take what Rosenburg says with a dump-truck of salt, but that's the way it looks. Henson also said he regretted not staying at Michigan for his senior year and concentrating on one sport or the other.

In any event, what is beyond dispute is that daddy Henson was a controlling freak who wouldn't leave his kid alone. Doesn't sound like a guy who would let his son make his own decisions if he wouldn't even let him practice or talk to colleges without daddy's approval.

SI article on Tom Brady (I didn't notice who the author was).  It talked about Henson's Dad and how involved he was.  Drew is quoted as saying that if he ever has a child, he won't be envolved in trying to micro-manage his life for him.  You should check out that article.

No FBS coach (and maybe not even an FCS coach) will want to go near this kid now. He's toxic. If I were his family, football would be the least of my concerns for him. He needs to pull his life together before he even thinks about playing football again.

You have got to be kidding me.

In all seriousness, his instability might be caused by some kind of psychological disorder. Conditions like bipolar disorder, ADD, and depression are often characterized by a chronic inability to stay focused. They also often occur in people who are otherwise extremely talented, charismatic, and intelligent. I really hope he gets the help he needs and can just live a stable, normal life. It seems like football is not in the cards for him. I really feel bad for the kid.
