Football Recruiting - Who is left on the Board?

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

So we still have four scholarships left but I feel like the likelihood of filling those spots seems to be slipping. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I can only think of four realistic-ish prospects left on the board

1) Garnett

2) Yuri Wright

3) Armani Reeves (if he visits)

4) The tight end who goes to school with Kalis.

Is there anyone else out there that I'm forgetting. Pharoah, Payton committed elsewhere. Doesn't look like we're offering that RB. Maybe that Dodson kid who is committed to Wisconsin but that seems pretty quiet right now. Same seems to be true on Jordan Diamond. Can't imagine they'll take Monty Madaris now that we already have two receiver commits. Is there anything else out there of any real possibility?

They are set on taking another DB, OL, and TE. Reeves looks more and more probable with PSU's situation, and we still have a great shot at Yuri Wright. Same goes for Garnett and Sam Grant (the TE). If we don't hit 28, I could see the coaches just saving a spot for next year instead of filling it with a 3-star who's not yet on our board.

I still see a strong shot at commits from Garnett, Diamond, Reeves, Wright, and Grant. Four spots for five guys, which isn't bad.

  • If all five want to commit, who do they turn away?
  • With the OL position, is it first come, first served, or do they make room for the other guy? That is to say, if Diamond committed, would they still make room for Garnett? If Garnett committed, would they take Diamond? Is there any reason they would take Diamond instead of Garnett (for instance, wanted an OG more than OT.)
  • Same question with DB:  first come first served, or some other metric?
  • Regarding DB, I know the door was pretty much closed for Demar Dorsey, but because he is at a GR CC, and because he has jumped through the hoops, and because he wants to play at Michigan, I'm curious if that door is locked and bolted, or open a crack.
  • What about Dodson & Kozan on the OL? Have they dropped off the list?
  • I know the least about Sam Grant. What kind of TE is he? Is he a pretty meh prospect? If there something I'm not seeing? I see he is ranked the #45 TE prospect by Scout, and TTB doesn't rank prospects until they commit.
  • When do they make announcements regarding unrenewed 5th years, etc.? In particular, I'm waiting for an official statement on whether Stonum is done at Michigan or not. If he was finished, you'd have to consider adding Diggs or Madaris to the list.

At this point, I would love to see Garnett, Wright, Reeves, and Grant. And if any of those went elsewhere, I'd be happy to add Diamond (or Dodson, or Kozan,) to the list.

Sam Grant has solid offers from both Arkansas and Oklahoma which are two schools that rely on tight ends and recruit them very well.  Oklahoma as gone so far as to assure Grant that even though they have two TEs committed they will accept a commitment from him.   Offers speak louder than stars, and his highlights are pretty solid.

Why not Madaris?

We only have eight wide receivers on scholarship next season if you count Darboh and Chesson. Two are slots and two others will be seniors. I can't identify a unit anywhere on the team outside of OL, DB and TE (which we all assume will see one more addition in this class) that needs another player more.

Article printed today on an MSU site has quotes from his coach saying it's down to MSU, Michigan and Kentucky. MSU has been pursuing him a long time, but they now have 3 WR commits + Arnett. He is reportedly still taking a Michigan official in Jan.

I say that because of the DS situation. If he does get the boot there may be a need for another WR. To be honest I am not really bothered by who else we get as long as we can get Wright. I would love to have the others as well but honestly I think Wright would be our best CB prospect since Leon Hall. I'd love to see a big physical CB on the field for UM again...it's been a while.

Quite a few of the Army practice reports are saying that Yuri is getting beat like a drum, which doesn't surprise me. Corners who are 6'2 that can play at that level are rare.

A lot of the recruiting analysts are saying that Yuri may not even be a UM recruit any more seeming how he is starting to project as a FS  and they want a corner.

Great point about tall corners.  I really prefer Reeves over Wright.  Reeves is a grounded kid with a great attitude, along with good corner skills.  The problem was that I thought he would stick with PSU.  The O'Brien hire, his remaining at NE through the playoffs and the alumni fracturing over the hire, just might be enough to sway Armani.

I would agree Garnett, and one of the DBs, Wright or Reeves if we can get one of them,  I think we would be fortunate to get one, and a quality TE if one is available, but I think if the coaches are still asking Madaris to visit on the 13th, that they would seriously consider giving him the 4th spot.  I believe ESPN has him as a 4star, and with the Stonum issues, it would be hard to pass up a big, physical 4 star receiver.  That said, this has been an exciting recruiting season! The corner from Tennessee decommited today and the coaches have been pushing really hard for him. He's 6'1 and is very good to say the least. If yuri isn't ours, I feel like he will be at the top of the board.

... is the dude of which you are thinking.

Crawley is also considering Auburn, Georgia, Maryland and Connecticut. He is also going to re-consider Michigan, Johnson said. His remaining official visits will likely be to three of those five schools.

Sounds like we don't have a huge shot at him.  And according to a few of the Recruitniks, Michigan is only showing a little bit of interest.  I'd love to have a shutdown corner.  We needs 'em.
