Remember seeing this when he was a commit and instantly liked him, then hated him for 2 years, and now love him again.

He was pretty big (6-1, 225-ish) and started @ MLB & FB in HS.

Not to start a flame war and all.... but... has anyone asked Gibbons to compare and contrast the two coaching staffs he's played under at M.
January 6th, 2012 at 12:10 AM ^
RichRod told him to think about blondes...major mistake.
January 6th, 2012 at 12:14 AM ^
No, RR told him to think about Gerg's hair while Gerg waves a beaver in front of it, which caused Gibbons to muff some kicks.

Hehe, 'beaver' and 'muff'

a kicking coach. What exactly would he compare and contrast? I guess he could say he likes Hoke more as a coach but that isn't going to make him start kicking footballs better.

No need for a kicking coach when you have 3 DL coaches.

I feel like RichRod would've said something like "DAMMIT KICKER!" whereas Brady is more of a "Brendan...think of the brunettes. They want you to make that field goal"
January 6th, 2012 at 8:46 AM ^
Hoke would say "Well, think more about brunettes fergodsakes........tremendous"
January 6th, 2012 at 9:08 AM ^
...vital coaching technique. Hoke would have first pointed to the uprights.

the epic double point at both goalposts to show him to kick the ball between them

For whatever reason our special teams players have just exploded under Coach Hoke. It's not only a vast improvement in Brendan Gibbon's play but also I don't think Jeremy Gallon has muffed a K/P catch all year. Maybe this is all due to the experience another year brings or maybe not, but we're glad to see the improvement. Noe the next move is to get Wile and Hagerup up to that level.

I do remember someone at a presser (a player) saying that RR never had his kickers practice in Michigan Stadium. That shocked me.
January 6th, 2012 at 10:03 AM ^
In 2010 our special teams coach was Tony Gibson. Who was also our Associate Head Coach and our Defensive backs coach.
In 2011 our special teams coach is Ferringo and the only other hat he wears is TE coach. I think that's the big difference.

Although neither staff had a kicking coach, the RR staff basically neglected any coaching in the kicking game. I can say this because I was good friends with some of the guys on the team, and a few of those were the kickers. I forget the guys name, and older guy I believe and not a main coach, was selected to oversee the kickers and apparently he had no kicking experience and didn't know how to coach or advise anything in the kicking game.
Also, one thing I found very interesting was their thoughts about Barwis. Most of the guys under LC and RR, shared one common tie. They were loyal to LC, strongly disliked the RR staff (not so much RR himself), but truly loved Barwis. Not so with the kickers. Many of those guys weren't fans of Barwis because they thought he overworked them throughout the week, i.e., having them lift lower body hard leading up to the game and their main kicking muscles were often still sore and recovering on game days. Minor tidbit, but still interesting.

Rich never met with him. Special teams didn't need coaching, remember?
January 6th, 2012 at 12:10 PM ^
I'll start it.
I don't have a link, but I seem to remember Gibbons earlier this season saying that part of what's helped him is the encouragement and confidence the present staff gave him. I took that to mean "as opposed to getting a face-full of coach for every mistake."

Must have been thinkin' bout those brunette girls
January 6th, 2012 at 12:01 AM ^
looks like he's had a few cold ones since this video. But that's okay because if Brunettes and Beer get the job done that's okay.

He does Judo...isn't surprising he can knock someone the fugg out.

Not a bad punt either.

Love the runner's stutter step hesitation, then *KABOOM*...."Ohhhhh!"

This was passed on to me from an eyewitness on the sideline at last years Gator Bowl: before Gibbon's kick Rich Rod went up to him and said "Hey Brendan, if you miss this, you're f***ing done." He proceeded to miss the kick. He reluctantly walked to the sideline and Rich said loudly for all to hear "Hey Brendan, F**k you!"

Brendan was in the DJ booth tonight at Skeeps and dedicated a song to all of he brunette girls in the crowd. Our kicker is enjoying his new found fame very much!

I really felt good for the whole team after the win, but especially so for Gibbons. For a guy who couldn't seem to do anything right last year to a guy who comes in with the game on the line in a BCS bowl and hammers it down the middle...I just couldn't have been happier for the kid. Sweet redemption!
