Spartan tears sign.

That sign was just those four botards channeling  their inner sparty.

I have to say I was very dissapointed when I saw that. Why don't you four just start calling each other "brahs" and take 300 level classes in couch burning and get it over with. Shame on you for embarassing our university. 

Holy crap, look all these holier than thou people.

It's not a big deal.  It's a football game.  So you poke a little fun at a rival who was whining about not making a BCS game.  It's funny.  It's fun.  It's part of a rivalry.

Some people take this stuff way to seriously.  Analyzing a sign in a stadium and trying to determine how it affects national perspective (very little), "the rivalry" (slightly), and if it is beneath us (who cares, it's some kids with a sign having fun?) is ridiculous.

What should be beneath Michigan alums/fans is disrespecting Sparty by saying they are not worth caring about/mentioning/acknowledging.  If you want to beat your opponent, you need to respect them.

I didn't like the sign either.  I agree that MSU is best ignored, but I really hated the sign because, seriously, "Spartan tears taste like Sugar?"  Somebody was trying a little too hard.

That said, it's not that big a deal to me.  So a few of our fans held up a stupid sign.  Whatever.

people are way too uptight about the whole "OMG, don't acknowledge MSU or they might get the idea that they matter!" thing.

When I first saw it, I didn't like it, for all of the reasons you guys have mentioned.

But by this morning, my mind has changed. Sparty's entire raison d'etre (under Dantonio particularly) is to be a foil for Michigan. All they ever do it talk about Michigan; our sign guys did it for a specific reason, and they will go on to being normal Michigan fans (dismissive of State) tomorrow. This sign would not have existed in any other year, so it's not a case of our fans stooping to State's level.

It was a joke. In the estimation of most Michigan fans, so is Sparty (albeit a pretty good one lately).

Notice, no one is compelled to make signs about Ohio when we are playing a bowl game. We have too much respect for that program and for that rivalry. Not so in the case of State.

I thought the sign was stupid, and it would have been downright embarrassing if we had lost. Are we turning into Sparty?

bad choice to pull out that sign, it gives spartan's the wrong impression. I saw lots of facebook comments last night from my spartan friends about how the "tables have turned" and "you didn't see any michigan signs during MSU's bowl game"

I liked the sign when I first saw it.  My only concern was that if Michigan lost the game, signs like that would be showing up at ever MSU/ UM game from now on.  But Michigan won so I am fine with it.  

Besides, there are numerous things that Michigan fans do at games that many people on this blog have considered classless.  For example, many people hate the "you suck" chant, and from my understanding the hockey chants are not always family friendly.  

It was one sign that given the situation with Cousins' comments made sense and was funny.

I believe that it is becoming the official University of Michigan position that beating MSU is a priority. End the OSU streak. Check. End the bowl drought. Check. Season sweep of Sparty in basketball. Check. What is left? Beat Dantonio and get rid of that clock.

..after reading the MSU players twitter posts bashing Michigan this morning, I tend to agree with the sign. 

1) Michigan State was in no way involved with the game

2) Michigan State had already won their bowl game  - Cousins' tears about the BCS selection were old news by last night

3) Michigan State had beaten us this year, for the fourth time in a row

4) Michigan State is not our primary rival

4a) Our primary rival would have been an infinitely more appropriate target for the sign - not only because they had plenty to cry about this year, but because they deserve the respect-hate shown by mocking them even when they're not involved with the game at hand

and, finally,

5)  We're Michigan.  We shouldn't give a shit what Michigan State is doing unless they're competing directly with us on the field.  This sign was 100% pure Sparty, and I wouldn't mind if the dolts who made the sign transferred their allegiances to East Lansing immediately.

MSU is constantly whining about how we're in a BCS bowl and they're not so why not play the game and rub it in a bit? I enjoy it more because I know it makes their blood boil.

And we should stop pretending we don't care about MSU because we do. The 5000 MSU threads since this year's MSU game has proven that

Until we beat them, I say we just keep on keepin on and let Sparty tag cars and hang signs at stadiums.

That was hands down one of the most glorious moments of the game.

Personally I didn't like the sign because it's precisely what Sparty/Ohio fans would do.

But then I started to view it  for what it is - a grade school level response to the Spartan football players (and fans) who previously whined like little children about Michigan going to the Sugar Bowl while they "got a rock".  As if Michigan has never received the shitty end of the stick when it comes to bowls, rankings, etc.

There was a time I actually rooted for MSU to win their games.  But now things have changed.

It's a rivalry.  We did a rivalry thing.  Anyone who "doesn't care about Sparty" is plagued by a massive case of denial.

Michigan. After seeing/hearing so many green dudes who were rooting against Michigan last night, I'm over that. Their fans are on a level with tsio's fans. 

Meh.  I cringed a bit because we should really be focusing on the game and all that, but Kork opened himself up for this kind of stuff when he publicly made statements about Michigan, nearly 7 weeks after the Michigan game.  You make comments like he made, you should expect some fan backlash.

Coupons brought it on himself when he cried about MSU's bowl placement.  

It's not a sign I would hold up at a game, but I laughed and nearly spit soda all over my living room when I saw it.

Sorry, but I loved the sign.  LOVED it.  All this "Sparty's not our rival" stuff is stupid.  Yes, they are.  No, they are not on the level of Ohio.  Yes, they are our rival.  Pretending otherwise is just dumb.  The sign was creative, funny as hell, and I'll bet you anything that any Sparty who saw it had his blood pressure rise just a little bit.  In that respect it was a rousing success.  "Fairly" creative, hell, I thought it was outstanding.  We know they're pissed about us going to a better bowl than them, why shouldn't we take the chance to twist the knife a little?  It's not "stooping to their level."  Badly spelled petty vandalism is their level.  That's a Leaders and Best response right there if you ask me.  It's fantastic.

I laughed at it.  It's not something that people should start doing regularly or anything, but MSU raised such a stink about us being in the game that a playful jab was acceptable. 

this explains why my brother (msu alumn) was mad after the game. We just need to realize they'll always be mad no matter what. The sign was clever and comical for sure.

I thought the sign was pretty stupid. MSU had nothing to do with the game, why bother bring it up?

My exact response was, "Oh shit. That is a dong punch.".
