Independence Bowl Open Thread
I am creating this a little early because I am stealing a moment on someone else's laptop at a family event.
So, this is the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl - Missouri versus North Carolina, the battle of the 7-5 teams. It seems like it could be at least mildly entertaining, but we shall see, eh?
Have fun with it. Tomorrow, the Pizza Bowl open thread! Yeah....someone will need to create that thread for me. I'll be on the way home from work.

Channel and time? Way too lazy to look it up
December 26th, 2011 at 4:59 PM ^
Try pushing the channel up button until you see the game.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
Turns out I was already there, Jim Rome is Burning was on before the game
December 26th, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
GO MIZZOU!!!
December 26th, 2011 at 5:11 PM ^
Sick catch
December 26th, 2011 at 5:12 PM ^
Be sure to watch UNC's defense as their DC will be moving to OSU next year.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
As a co-coordinator/assistant head coach. Not even sure what all of that means
December 26th, 2011 at 6:46 PM ^
Meyer the Leyer already announced Fickell would be staying as DC, then oops, he hired someone else to be DC.....call them co DCs until Fickell quits.
and if RichRod had brought in a DC from a crap school like NC, where he had an undistinguished defense..........
December 26th, 2011 at 9:06 PM ^
I'm not sure you've payed much attention to NC's recent history on the defensive side of the ball.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:19 PM ^
To go to this game all the time
December 26th, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
This game is gonna be a 49-47 kinda game.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
Anyone else just dying for the damn Sugar Bowl to commence? Not counting the rest of today, it's still seven days away. Ugh.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:43 PM ^
I would settle in the meantime for a bowl with a decent crowd/atmosphere and two interesting teams. Hopefully ND-FSU can deliver. These Shreveport/St. Petersburg bowls in empty small stadiums are killing me
December 26th, 2011 at 6:07 PM ^
The game in St Pete was OK. It was sorta like going to an EMU game, but indoors.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
anyone know where to catch this game on-line besides espn3. Apparently espn does not stream games in costa rica
December 26th, 2011 at 6:06 PM ^
and you want to huddle over your computer to watch the Independence Bowl??
December 26th, 2011 at 6:11 PM ^
yes I do. I hiked all day. Im drinking a beer. and I want to indulge in my first addiction, college football.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:22 PM ^
I was there for spring break earlier this year and might be going back this break too. And here's a link: http://www.firstrowsports.tv/watch/99684/1/watch-independence-bowl:-missouri-vs-north-carolina.html
December 26th, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
In that case the answer, as it always is when someone asks for a link, is First Row Sports.

Thanks gents! Go Blue. Right now im in Arenal, by the volcano
December 26th, 2011 at 6:50 PM ^
into that sort of thing, I'd suggest going ziplining there. My dad and I had fun doing that and you get some amazing views.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:57 PM ^
I watched the Super Bowl in Arenal when I was in CR last February. Great people.
December 26th, 2011 at 5:41 PM ^
Like mellow Nelly.

Need Misouri to pull this out and cover or I'm going to be in a big pool hole.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:14 PM ^
It's just a classic football name.
EDIT: Well, nothing kills a well-earned 1st and 10 like a fumble. Mizzou ball.
DOUBLE EDIT: If UNC's DC will be at OSU and we can still get 15 yards on a bad snap, I approve of this hire.
TRIPLE EDIT: Now I definitely approve of OSU's new defensive coordinator. TD Mizzou.
OH, CHRIST EDIT: Is UNC's mission to have all their drives from this time forward die before they begin? Play under review, but really, Tar Heels?
December 26th, 2011 at 6:21 PM ^
Somehow, I think the UNC DC hire was more about recruiting. Fickell is staying to call the defense, so there will be continued continuity. UNC has always recruited very well, and I believe getting him is an attempt to get a great recruiter on staff, and then some contingency for if/when Fickell leaves.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:36 PM ^
VT beat UNC 24-21. Gobbler Country breaks down the game, and one of the claims made is that UNC (Edit: Virginia Tech, not UNC) has trouble against teams with big, strong linemen (on both sides of the ball). Can't wait to see the game in the trenches at the Sugar Bowl.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:49 PM ^
UNC's Oline was huge. Starters at 310, 340, 315, 310, and 320. Defense is 285, 310, 320, and 260.
Not saying Michigans Oline can't and won't dominate but they are substantially smaller. Hopefully in the near future a line that size will be back.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:21 PM ^
It's just a game of "keep away" at the moment. North Carolina is just not allowed to have the ball apparently.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:42 PM ^
December 26th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
Mizzou looks like they're going at about 3/4 speed on offense at this point. Total mismatch.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:26 PM ^
At least it would be, if this were a junior high school game. I'm pretty sure my high school had bigger crowds, and we weren't very good.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:26 PM ^
will be watching the game. For some reason he has a grudge against Mizzou.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:35 PM ^
...Renner channels his inner John Elway.
A great drive ends in a field goal. 31-10 Mizzou at halftime, and they get the ball to begin the 2nd half. This could be fun. It is beyond me why UNC did not try to just punch it in. Really?
December 26th, 2011 at 6:32 PM ^
If i was a NC fan on any level my TV would've just died a horrible, ugly death on that 3rd and goal call. Slow developing counter plays dont generally work against a 6 man front.
And that was coming out of a time out for God's sake.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:39 PM ^
I'm with you on that one. Even the UNC coach had his head down leaving the field. Even if you fail on the TD, at least there's a show of some confidence in winning the game. A FG just makes it look like the coach doesn't care if they lose but just wants to keep the score as close as possible.
December 26th, 2011 at 6:50 PM ^
If they are going to play like this, 3 TDs might very well be "as close as possible". I am not a UNC on ANY level, and that call made me upset as an observer...
December 26th, 2011 at 6:54 PM ^
Rather than Hoke MANBALL.

December 26th, 2011 at 6:54 PM ^
4 points on this for bowl pick em.
December 26th, 2011 at 7:00 PM ^
"Well honey, you may not have noticed, but we're getting our ASS kicked.".

But at least the announcers says it's only a 3 score game.
December 26th, 2011 at 7:06 PM ^
Well, at least it won't be a tough choice between this and MNF. Let's go Saints.
December 26th, 2011 at 7:30 PM ^
I was not aware that you could extend a drive by netting negative rushing yards. This knowledge might come in handy in closer games.
EDIT: One case of hysterical blindness in the Mizzou secondary later, it's 31-17.
DOUBLE EDIT: I wonder if Mizzou is going to the SEC to get a lesser bowl than this one. Can going to the Independence Bowl every few years wear on a team?
December 26th, 2011 at 8:05 PM ^
Another reason for no mascots (as if we needed one). They break bowl trophies.
December 26th, 2011 at 9:08 PM ^
Not sure if that says more about the mascot or the quality of the bowl trophy.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:05 PM ^
Wow I am glad this will be Meyers DC next year. UNC has looked unimpressive on both sides of the ball and I know they probably don't have the talent OSU does on any given year but this is still not a well coached team. It's not like Mizzou is any more talented (in terms of guys that they recruit) than UNC.
December 26th, 2011 at 8:08 PM ^
December 26th, 2011 at 8:11 PM ^
lol Truman dropped the trophy
December 26th, 2011 at 8:13 PM ^
Why did UNC not go for 2 after scoring their last td, to pull within 16? It at least technically pulls it to a two score game. And the announcers don't even make a mention of it. Does that show how little these teams care about winning the game?
December 26th, 2011 at 8:13 PM ^
Did they show the Missouri mascot drop the trophy?
December 26th, 2011 at 8:14 PM ^
just turned the game on, one step behind tonight
