so i thought that, if this was 16th, i'd look at the things which were actually in a position to win and decide that they were much more important than some crusty old aquarium. but they're not. half of them are high schools trying to get fucking band uniforms. go vote, people!

Crusty!?! Take a look online if haven't actually been to the aquarium. It's a truly unique space still in very good condition. This $50,000, along with another grant they just won for fixing up the roof, would go a long way towards reopening of the tanks. If anything, my kids need something to do on rainy days. Think of the children!
As for it's worthiness, yes, those band kids sure know how to text. I've been following this for weeks now (and voting as much as I can), and the aquarium had been as high as 11, but the other groups are persistant, and we have fallen quite a bit.
MGoCommunity is a powerful presence on the web, and with great power comes great responsibilty. Let's do the responsible thing and beat those band kids! Please vote... often.

Albert Kahn and Detroit buildings go pretty much hand in hand. Hell, he pretty much goes hand in hand with Central Campus as well. I know of a place where you can find a few pictures of these buildings.
And it was one of the first Aquariums and one of the longest running until they closed it. Sad really but the building is in surprisingly good shape because people have been maintaining it.

Way back when, during the time the Friends of the Belle Isle Aquarium (FOBIA, great acronym, I know) were fighting the city to keep it open, I was involved with a few different preservationist groups that had significant overlap with FOBIA's membership. The kind of completely irrational and idiotic decisionmaking and the process in which the Aquarium was ultimately closed was utterly absurd to watch unfold. And, unfortunately, at that point in time, the City didn't have the greatest respect for or relationship with preservationists in general, which made things all the more prickly. It's been fantastic to see the kind of grassroots interest and love for the Aquarium that has coalesced in the years since, and I'm glad there seems to be some interest to actually reopen.
Contrast it with the complete disaster that was/is the Belle Isle Zoo, which has now essentially become a total waste with no hope of return, this is a great story.

that when you go to log in with facebook for the vote you have to allow the pepsi app...which says it's allowed to access your data at anytime and post things on YOUR BEHALF?
Something to think about.
On a side note, definitely a good cause. I love me some fish.
