OT: Todd Graham says good bye to players by text message
Channeling his best Bobby Petrino, Todd Graham notified his players at Pitt that he was leaving, by text message. You stay classy, Todd Graham.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:45 PM ^
You know Brady Hoke that too....
December 15th, 2011 at 3:47 PM ^
That's because all of his players were out of town, and he didn't have any time to lose before coming to Ann Arbor.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
That is true. Todd Graham is just a prick because he only stayed one season.
December 15th, 2011 at 6:17 PM ^
So you're telling everyone that if you were offered a better job at another company after one year being at your current company, you would decline and tell them, "Well, I have only been here one year, so I'm going to stay a little while longer to please everyone. Call me in six months."
I'm not trying to be a dick, just saying that people should always accept a better job when it comes along.
December 15th, 2011 at 8:00 PM ^
How is Arizona State a better job than Pitt? And why are you comparing "head coach of Div I football team" to any other job?
December 16th, 2011 at 12:54 AM ^
1) ASU is not in the Big East 2) ASU co-eds
December 16th, 2011 at 10:58 AM ^
This. 100,000 times this. None of us know the circumstances around the contract/behind the scenes issues/family location/etc. I don't think any of us would tell a coworker who takes a better job (or at least more desirable to the person accepting the job) that they are a classless asshole who has no respect for the sanctity of our organization?
However, when sports are involved suddenly we get really pissed. Like other people have said...it's probably winter break so the players aren't on campus. You are offered a job that you see as better. Who here wouldn't sign and run? I know football isn't a job for most of us and the thought of people looking at it as a job is unpalatable.
So. Next time you get all pissed off when you realize football is a business...ask yourself, would I get mad if someone did an analogous thing in my field? If the answer is yes, well by all means go ahead with your rant.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:48 PM ^
School was out and hardly anyone on his staff much team was on campus.

December 15th, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
Me too... there's also the whole issue where Hoke never made it a secret that his dream job was Michigan, whereas, according to several of the players, Graham made a point of insisting to them he was at Pitt for the long haul.

Sauce. That's something I'd only expect from an Ohio coach. Karma is an MF'er.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:52 PM ^
Name the state that Brady Hoke is home.
Name the state that Brady Hoke first coached in and held his first head coaching job in.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:53 PM ^
Wyoming?
I'm always bad at these kind of trivia questions...
December 15th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
No man, that's Dave.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
to a very specific team in said state. Hoke won't call them tOSU than neither will I.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:59 PM ^
Oh that school that Bo spent 4 years coaching at.
(The preferred nomenclature is "That school in Ohio" as opposed to just Ohio. We can't be insulting the Bobcats!)
Edit: When was Graham at tSIO? I don't see it on his wiki.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:40 PM ^
I disagree: the preferred nomenclature is "Ohio" because that is how our coach rolls. That's one, and two, TSIO is too much of a ripoff of Ohio's TSUN, and ripping things off is a Sparty tradition.

Ball State is in Indiana, not Ohio.
He was first an sisstant at a HS in Indiana (not Ohio).
He was first an assistant college coach in Michigan, not Ohio, GVSU.
December 15th, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
I am not trolling right now: I had no idea Ball State was in Indiana, not Ohio. I think I must have had it confused with Kent State? Or learned the wrong place from someone equally misinformed?
I feel kind of dumb. I don't really think about it often or anything, but still.
December 16th, 2011 at 1:52 AM ^
if you want to sound like a real hoosier, start referring to ball state as testical tech. all the cool kids do it.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
In person would have been awkward, since he hadn't had time to learn all their names yet.
December 15th, 2011 at 3:55 PM ^
Well played, well played.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:00 PM ^
It took him long enough to learn his assistant coaches/mercenaries names.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:10 PM ^
"Hey guy, thanks for everything."
"Never forget the good times, pal."
"Ok, Buddy. Keep holding the rope."
December 15th, 2011 at 4:09 PM ^
His players are not very happy about it.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:12 PM ^
I can't tell if this will help get recruits to decommit from Pitt or help them stay. They would decommit cause they would realize that the guy that recruited them is an asshole, but then then they might stay because they realize he is so bad a person that the next coach could only be better
December 15th, 2011 at 4:34 PM ^
Rushel Shell, their biggest committ said that he i staying put.

When my assistant lacrosse coach in college decided to leave and take a position at UNC he called each of us personally and he had only been with the team for two years. I don't really remember the times he yelled at me or the times he made us run... I remember that he took the time to call me. I get that it's an awkward time of the year, but it doesn't take much to make a classy exit, regardless of how long you've been with a team.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
That is good on your lax coach, but to be fair, a football team has more than three times as many players. If a football coach tried to call everyone individually it would take all day and the news would be out before he got to the end of the list.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
At least it wasn't via Post-It?
December 15th, 2011 at 4:25 PM ^
My son was on a travel baseball team last year and the coach cut a player mid season by texting the mom.
After the one millionth time he f bombed the kids and had a temper tantrum in the middle of the game, my son said that he no longer wanted to play for him.
Since he cut a player via text message, we quit via email.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
Come on . . . I've known plenty of defensive backs that weren't like that.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:32 PM ^
Looks like he went 13-year-old girl break-up on them. Just...lame. I hope this guy learns from this pathetic stunt in the future.
December 15th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
Why would ASU want him? Not that impressive a resume, no ties to the program or even the conference.
December 15th, 2011 at 7:29 PM ^
That's only thing I can figure. Job had been open for quite some time, main rival made well received hire. They had to be getting pretty nervous.

....at least be creative and text your team the Morse Code equivalent of your farewell message. I imagine that, if he had the nuts to do it, he would have done in person....in Semaphore.
