If this is true - OSU no sanctions - I will be sick.  How can you knowing use ineligible players in a bowl game and plead to the NCAA to allow them to play in said bowl gameand not get a least a one year bowl ban (or more likely 2 years) ?

for TSIO. Gene Smith and Gordon Redenbacher had St. Tress perform his act of Seppuku for the masses and then Emmert got his balls licked by GG just like old times.

The NCAA will go no further.

No offense...but any of us hoping that OSU gets nailed is wishing on a star.

I think OSU knows it is going to get away with it, is acting like it, and will ultimately get a slap on the wrist.

Really, why should any of us have faith in the NCAA, after the Cam Newton saga?

If the NCAA doesn't intend to penalize Ohio, what is the benefit in stalling. And why is Urban telling recruits nothing is going to happen while Gene Smith still says that sanction may happen:

"Cannot speculate on what (NCAA) may do. No, we do not intend to self-impose postseason sanction." athletics director Gene Smith told The Associated Press in a text message

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2011/11/ohio-state-play-bowl-game-ncaa-investigation/1

Also Washington Post seems to think Sanctions are "likely"

This article was double-posted, and me and another mod removed both of those threads before this one popped up. Since those threads died and this one now has 100+ comments I guess the third poster wins.

NON-META: Urban Meyer is telling recruits what Smith told him. Meyer wouldn't have taken the job without assurances that the penalties would not be program crippling. The thing is we all know Smith and Gee believed all along that this isn't a big deal.

I don't think anyone knows anything except all the tea leaves which seem to confirm the penalties won't be nearly as drastic as they were against USC, and that there's nothing about the cars in there, and the NCAA doesn't feel there was a Lack of Institutional Control. Given how lenient they've been with Ohio State in the past, and given the apparent lack of any effort to counter the consistent stonewalling, the best guess is Gee and Smith are now correct in their assumptions. Those same assumptions would be ludicrous unless the NCAA is just as ludicrious. However the possibility that NCAA could be that ludicrous was always a major consideration here.

It sounds crazy that they'll get off only because you believe that it is impossible NCAA is that incompetent. It is possible. We don't know if it's true yet, but we can easily guess where Meyer is getting that information from: he's getting it directly from Gee and Smith, who've been saying all along that Ohio State will be fine.

If osu ends up with nothing then what happens to Oregon for buying recruits and UNC? Miami goes free and USC most likely wins a court case, deservedly so, against the NCAA. Who in the nation will accept any kind of sanctions after all that? If you were an AD at any other school in America, would you cooperate 1% or accept anything levied against one of your program? What in the hell would be the use of having college football anymore instead of the NFL creating it's own developemental league? This series of events will lead to major changes.

"If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone."

Dunn was a nice to have, not a must-have.  What Meyer told him, what the sanctions are, really doesn't matter at this point.  Life's not fair, neither is NCAA football.  We are more than capable of beating them on the football field. We already beat them everywhere else.

Meyer is aware of the impending sanctions and the worst case scenario for the NCAA.  they are drawing it out to reduce the WTF factor cause no one will care.  tbh, they have mitigated this quite well.  I still hate their guts.

Given the NCAA's history of looking the other way when it comes to Buckeye indiscretions, I think it would be naive of us to expect any additional sanctions.  On the paranoid conspiracy front, having Gene Smith being chummy w/ the Infractions Committee and Gee likewise with Emmert there is no way the NCAA comes down hard on them.  Since the first day OSU shenanigans became public my stance has been "I'll believe it when I see it" regarding harsh sanctions.  Another fine example of the NCAA regarding OSU:  "So you had to fire (although Gee said it was Tressel's decision alone, originally) your lying- and cheating-ass coach?  Well, let your new coach concentrate on a critical recruiting period while the interim staff coaches bowl preparation."

At some level, I think the Gee/Emmert thing is so over analyzed. Yes, they were college room mates and yes they probably keep in some contact. But let's be clear here...if the NCAA, regardless of their competence level, clears Ohio on the matter then there will be a media shit storm of epic proportions. Couple that with what could only be open revolt from UNC, the U, Oregon and UNC (all facing pending NCAA "action") something would have to give. There are more players in the game than Gee and Emmert with a lot of competing interests.

I have an issue if Ohio gets off easy with the sanctions they already proposed. It will show the NCAA is just as bad a politics and does what they seem to feel is important and benifits them. I have only recently taken notice of the bias that Ohio gets, starting with allowing all six players who started out suspended for this year play in their BCS bowl game last year. How does one team get away with all they have gotten away with. I live in Ohio and have my whole life. Obviously I am a little bitter over the beating we have taken the past few years, but I cannot believe that my bitterness is clouding my judgement.

i bet tressell is telling himself he didn't even have to resign. nothing probably would of happened even if tressell was still coaching there.

Per an extremely voracious interweb source...

Dunn: ...coach I love OSU but I was a bit worried about the possibility of sanctio...

Meyer: My God, did you see Tebow on Sunday? Good thing he retained everything I taught him. But seriously, its all because of Jesus. You do know that I introduced him to Jesus right?

Dunn: Jesus, as in Christ?

Meyer: The one and only... yeah, me and the Saviour, we tight. Had him over with da heavenly host at the last booster meeting. Good times. Told me he's working on giving blessing Timmy with an overhead release, real cool cat though. You do go to church right bri?

Dunn: ummm, yes..

Meyer: I thought i saw that in ya. Actually, my great grandfather was a 13th undocumented disciple. He wrote a gospel, but you know the 12, all about cliques and jealousies.

Dunn: really i didnt know you were jewish?

Meyer: Well, we were, but i was such a perfect jew they just call me a Catholic now. You do know they named that one pope after me right?

Dunn: wow, never heard that one...

Meyer: yeah, you know, was raised to be humble, but its tough sometimes.

Dunn: So about the sanctions, can you guarantee me that OSU is in the clear?

Meyer: uhhhhh, what???

Dunn: i said is osu gonna be ok?

Meyer: speak up son, I cant hear you (whispered) did you ask whether I was impervious to all media and NCAA scrutiny? (shouts) then YES ABSOLUTELY!

Dunn: really great to hear coach! im sold!!!

Meyer: welcome home son... you should tweet about it or something...

Nevermind the rather large question of whether or not OSU will face additional penalties. What's really upsetting right now is OSU's evident certainty re what's coming. For Meyer to say such a thing to Dunn, with such confidence, means one of two things.

Option 1: Meyer doesn't know a thing and is lying to recruits.

Option 2: The NCAA has already tipped its hand to OSU.

I can't tell which is more corrupt.

Do you think DB is saving a pimp hand for the OSU sanctions. Working on the NCAA committee in a corporate style arm twisting?

That would be funny if OSU got nailed for the infractions and meyer lied about this

It seems that Meyer is going off what he was told before he was hired at Ohio. I still think (hope) the NCAA will do more to right this wrong. The self-imposed sanctions are a joke. If the goal is truly deterrence and punishmnent, more needs to be done.

Well, even if he just played dumb (which seems to be a specialty for Meyer), I wish Dunn the best but I also hope he doesn't start bitching when he gets a two-year bowl ban and a couple of other significant sanctions, which I still expect to occur.

Either way, there are other RBs in the world, and if UM doesn't get one this year they'll get one soon.

A.  He took the job in the first place.

They are giving him $4 million a year to coach in his home state.  Maybe he doesn't care if the sanctions come down.  Anyway, let's say there's a 50% chance of serious sanctions in his mind.  Maybe he's willing to roll the dice.

What he must know is this: there is a good chance whatever Gee and Smith told him was BS, because they wanted him to take the job.  Meyer is a smart guy and has been around the block.

B.  He would be a liar if serious sanctions came down

Not true.  He has told people that "Gee and Smith told me X."  It's probably true: Gee and Smith probably told him that BS.  Of course, Meyer probably knows it's all BS and guesswork, but at least he has plausible deniability with recruits.

Anyway, being confident that there are no sanctions is the only way for him to play this right now.  If he told recruits "I don't have a damn clue about sanctions" ... well, that's not much of a selling point.  Should he sit at home for 3 weeks waiting for the hammer to drop?  No way, there's work to be done.  So he repeats the BS Gee and Smith told him and hopes to the high heavens that it's true.  And if there's a bowl ban, he knows that it's always easier to convince a recruit not to decommit than it is to convince the same recruit to commit.

THIS IS A THEORY.  I have no hard facts.
