Ohio Sanctions Timing?
Well, the season is over, as is the championship game. Ohio didn't make it, but is in a bowl. I'm wondering when the NCAA sancations report on Ohio will arrive.
At this point, I'm cynically assuming nothing much will happen. Otherwise, would Urban have taken the job? All the Ohio homers who were whining about how everyone had it in for them can now shut up. The focus has effectively gone elsewhere than Columbus.
In a way, it would be nice if Ohio was sanctioned from bowls for a year or two (pushing Dunn fully into the Michigan fold, and giving him cover in Ohio for changing where he goes.)
The biggest advantage I can see for Michigan would be more significant scholarship reductions. Five over three years is nothing. It'd be nice to see them receive at least what USC got. A loss of 3 - 5 annually for 3 years would cause some pain.
Regardless, it has been a while since I've heard anything. If the NCAA doesn't report this week, I could see them postponing all the way after the MNC game.

if Ohio's punishment isn't in line with theirs. I really hope that they do. That lawsuit along with the lawsuit regarding the use of players' likeness will give huge blows to the NCAA.

I sure hope they do. I also hope Larry Scott tells the NCAA to go fuck itself and do something drastic (maybe boycotting the NCAA MBB tournament?).

The NCAA BB Tournament wouldnt even miss the Pac12 as the highest ranked team is currently Stanford at 30/37 in the 2 polls...

I don't think it matters one bit how good or bad the teams are; the Pac-12 boycotting an NCAA tournament would be a huge deal.

You're assuming they won't get into any trouble because Ohio State has been saying they don't forsee anymore sanctions coming in. These are the same people that lied about this in the first place, then lied to get the players eligible for the bowl game, then lied about this being the only time it's happened, then lied some more.
If you're trying to get Urban Meyer to come to your program, of course you say nothing is going to happen.
Something is going to happen. They will get punished.

I believe the COI was meeting Friday and Saturday. So I'd expect some word shortly.

I find it funny that supposedly Gene Smith and Gordon Gee convinced Urban Meyer that the NCAA are not going to add any significant sanctions. How can anyone in their right mind believe anything that either one of those idiots say?

they can write you a big check to buy your allegiance. I wonder Urban will sneak some non-cash affecting terms that favor him into his deal just in case things don't end up quite as rosey as promised. After what happened to Al Golden at Miami, I sure would have been thinking about that.

Don't underestimate the freindship between Gordon Gee and Mark Emmert. That pisses me off more than anything regarding the investigation. Mark Emmert does not want to punish his mentor, especially if that mentor's advice and references helped get him his job in the first place.

I'd imagine the NCAA will wait for something big to happen; say, a huge East Coast blizzard that knocks out power to millions of people, or maybe another Bernie Madoff-style fraud case breaking open. Or they'll discover Santa Claus is real. Something else dominating the news so the sanctions get a small space on page 8.

The Committee on Infractions had a conference call on Saturday to finalize the OSU case. Ohio State was not required to call in, since it was in agreement with everything in the November NoA.
A ruling is expected by the end of the year.

Wouldn't we rather this thing just drag out as long as possible? I'm as curious as the next U-M fan as to what the punishment will be, but isn't it advantage Michigan every day that dark cloud of uncertainty hangs over that School down South? The sooner it gets announced, the sooner they can start downplaying it to recruits and putting it behind them. I'm hoping for after February.

in the NCAA doing the right thing here. Ohio will get off with a wrist slap to the equivalant of what they have self-imposed and walk away smiling and laughing. OSU is an NCAA cash cow in football and basketball and the NCAA wants themnm in the discussion, not on the sidelines. The sign to other questionable programs will be cheat if you want, just don't flaunt it.

The NCAA makes no money off of OSU in either football or basketball. The NCAA has no FBS football revenue, and their basketball contract is locked in for several years (i.e. one team being out does not hurt their bottom line one nickel).

And the money form hoops comes basically from running the tournament. Take OSU out entirely and the NCAA tournament goes on, with no loss in any revenue.

The NCAA won't do a DAMN thing. Why would they give OSU the exception of having 2 coaching staffs if "they were really really mad" at them - give me a break. OSU brings in big bucks, purchase apparel, etc etc etc. Slap on the wrist if that - as far as the USC thing, I bet that's just a rumor that I really wish was true.

OSU has written the book on how to handle the NCAA IMO. Instead of cowering in fear and aquiesing to their every demand Ohio took a very different tack. Almost from day one their attitude was "fuck you - nothing happened here and even if it DID happen then...well...fuck you.".. They've had the proverbiale middle finger up at the NCAA from the very day this broke and they havent dropped it yet.
Frankly as much as I hate those bastards I do give them props for taking a completely different approach and it seems to have worked. The NCAA blinked and backed down.

the strength of hiring smith...he knows how the NCAA 'deals' or handles things...he KNOWS thier stance and weakness...it's not so much brass balls as it is knowing the NCAA is more about money than right.

I think you're on to something. I think USC is exhibit A as to how a blanket "Fuck You, NCAA" works out. . . not so well. However, if you know their weaknesses and say "f you" in areas where you can say "f you," and concede in areas where you know they've got you. . . well, that's just good strategy, really.

That's funny - I never even thought about that connection until you brought it up but you're right. OSU appears to have little use for rules, authority or any sort of punishment save what they decide to be appropriate.
Does that make the NCAA James Taggart, Wesley Mouch or Dr Ferris? Cause OSU seems to be playing the role of Hank Rearden.

The rest of the B1G schools, especially Michigan, are Hank: flawed reasoning allows OSU to be...OSU. Jim Delaney is Dr. Stadler: creating a monster unknowingly and having to live with it. Emmert is Mouch: incompetent and unaware that he will never be competent. Gene Smith is Lillian Reardon: trying to make Ohio equivalent to M/B1G even though they're obviously morally bankrupt.
Lloyd Brady just has to be John Galt; the hair fits too perfectly for that not to be the case. Dagny hasn't revealed herself, and Francisco is...USC? Auburn? mocking the system Emmert profits off of and Lillian endorses. The last one is probably a huge stretch.

I am sure ohio didn't need to remind the NCAA that they are in fact their boss. Aren't all schools, tecnically?
And if ohio walked away from the NCAA bb tourney, or even a bowl game...what's to stop them from inviting another big school to stage an end-of-season exhibition? At a neutral venue down south? It'd be worth bazillions and would destroy the NCAA.
Didn't vest's violations occur withing the timeframe of the bb infractions for them to be charged with LOIC? Even if so, would never happen.
