Sugar Bowl Tailgate Party Question

Submitted by buckeyeh8er on

Has anyone been to one of the tailgate parties at any of our previous bowls? It's not much money but if it is not really worth the money than I may lean towards tailgating in a parking lot. Is anyone else going to this one? Thanks for the feedback.

Granted it was eight years ago and I was eight, I went to the one for the Rose against USC. It was fun from a kid's prospective! Plus interaction with fans from the opponent.

Are you serious, bro?

The tailgate I went to for the Texas Rose Bowl was awesome. Tents with beers and food, and some huge ass TV screens to watch the early games (Iowa's last second win over... LSU was it? I was drunk).

The Sugar Bowl tailgate is a cash bar. That's all you should have to know to pass on it. Tailgate on Bourbon.

If you see a man with blonde-ish hair and of average build passed out under a horse on Bourbon Street, offer him some coffee and help him to his feet. I'll still need to go to the game yet.

Depends what you're up for(and who your with, ie a nine year old). I was at the most recent one in Pasadena and the CapOne in 07. The food is ok, cash bar, and its always nice to be around friedly company. Its definetly low key and a "family" atmosphere; more of a place to hang out and get some grub with other Michigan people. If youre looking for a party, the UM Tailgate is not the place.

I'm drinking at Ryans Pub 241 Decatur st. I was there for Bradys super bowl victory vs the rams. Hoping it brings us luck. Plus its a great bar. It served as our headquarters the week leading up to superbowl / mardi gras as everything was bunched together that year b/c of 9/11.

the Alumni Association one I went to in Iowa this year, I would skip it. It's was a very laid back atmosphere that's great for kids. You're in New Orleans! Go out and enjoy yourself.

On a related note, I've been watching Treme (as part of my pre-Sugar Bowl New Orleans Fest ramp up), and my question is: does the Sugar Bowl have a parade and a second line? I've found reference to "impromptu" parades, and perhaps an impromptu second line. Check it out:

Sugar Bowl Parade

There is usually an imprompto parade the day before the Sugar Bowl with the Mardi Gras Indians and other traditional parade staples. The parade usually starts around at 11:30 a.m. at Pat O'Brien's and proceeds from the corner of St. Peter and Royal streets, then uptown on Royal St. to Iberville, lakebound on Iberville to Bourbon, downtown on Bourbon to Bienville, and then lakebound on Bienville to the front of Arnaud's Restaurant for its finish. Everybody is invited to join the fun and celebration with what has become a Sugar Bowl tradition - its annual Second Line Parade.

Realized my post is going to get me neg bombed to Bolivia

What I mean is, you will fin second lines in traditionally black neighborhoods. These are also the highest crime neighborhoods in the city.

If you're white and second lining in the quarter, the locals will laugh.

I'm just going to be hanging out on Bourbon Street before the game, I think. Ample alcohol and good food around that area, and I don't think it's too far from the stadium.

I'm thinking the tailgating in the French Quarter will be where it's at. I think we should plan on revisiting this either the day before the game or the day of the game with an official "Where are you tailgating right now in New Orleans for the game?" thread.

I went to the Alumni Tailgate at the Rose Bowl in 2007 and had a lot of fun. Not much drinking-wise if you want to get destroyed for the game, but they have a few things on hand. In Pasadena it was great because we were carless and there were not a lot of restaurants between the Rose Parade route and the Rose Bowl itself. As for NOLA, you are in the middle of a downtown area, the French Quarter is not that far away, and good eats should be easy to find. That being said, I am still planning on going to the Alumni Tailgate, so I look forward to seeing people there.
