Bowl Grand Slam if M wins Sugar
Don't know if this has been posted, but if Michigan wins the Sugar Bowl the program will have completed the "Bowl Grand Slam", with wins in the Rose Bowl (many times), Fiesta Bowl ('86), and Orange Bowl ('00). Has any program ever done this before? Or will this be yet another reason why Michigan Football is the greatest thing in the universe?

Wolverine Historian will know this off the top. I looked up NCs and Michigan is the ONLY school to win NC in all 4 major men's sports.

what the hell are the 4 major sports? Football, basketball, and then it is subjective as hell, lacrosse and soccer both have more teams than hockey and we have not won natty's in either one.

I don't see any problem with saying the four major sports. In the USA, there are four sports clearly more popular than the fifth most popular sport, whether those are the sports colleges can add doesn't really change anything.

If we win another Basketball NC, we will be the only school to win multiple NC's in each of the 4 major sports.

since it was Big Ten vs Pac 10 for so many years until this BCS crap. Check out the Rose Bowl winners and work from there.
Oklahoma just completed the grand slam by winning last years Fiesta, that I know.

Notre Dame might already have that. Being independant, they were not locked into any of the major bowls, plus they were not subject to the stupid "1 team from the conference can play in a bowl" rule the Big Ten had back in the 60's and 70's if not earlier.
Plus, back when the Southwest Conference existed, the Cotton Bowl was actually a major bowl, and I know Notre Dame won that at least once (beating the University of Houston as I recall).

I was going to say that Notre Dame has never been to the Rose Bowl, but turns out they beat Stanford in 1925.

back in the Rockne days, before the Big Ten/Pac 8 lock down, that Notre Dame played and won it. Back then, it was really the only bowl (that mattered anyway).

The first few Rose Bowls were between the Pac10 and Big10 but the Big10 whipped them so bad most years they stopped inviting us for many years until they felt their teams were better able to compete.

ND won the 1925 Rose Bowl, Sugar in 73 and 92, Fiesta in 89, and Orange in 75 and 90.

Oklahoma won the Rose Bowl when OSU got pulled to the championship game in 2002, and has won the others several times.

Nebraska is in the right conference to complete the Grand Slam as well. They have won the Cotton, Orange, Fiesta, and Sugar Bowls, but are 0-2 in the Rose Bowl. Hopefully Michigan will ensure that the Cornhuskers have to wait a long time for their next attempt to complete the Grand Slam in Pasadena.

Tough to claim a major bowl grand slam without the Cotton Bowl of yesteryear, which I assume ND, Tex, Okla and PSU have. If their 'Grand Slams' are 5 games and ours is a 'BCS era grand slam', might be better just to let it pass.
If you want to keep it to BCS era slam, we need to wait until next year and include the BCS title. If you let us go back and include pre-BCS era games (ND's 1925 Rose Bowl win), then we need a Cotton Bowl win to match up.
All in all, better left unspoken I think.

Except a Grand Slam kind of implies 4, as in 4 runs in baseball, the majors in tennis and golf, etc. For the sake of this, I think the four original BCS bowls are appropriate to count.

We had a chance to go to the Cotton Bowl in '86. The loser of the Michigan - Ohio State game was scheduled to go to the Cotton Bowl. But Ohio State insisted on being the loser.

Pretty sure the Bowl Grand Slam would be if we won and MSU, OSU, and Notre Dame all lost. I'd smile for the rest of my life.

Needs got the complete list. I'm surprised no Pac-whatever team has done it, you would think USC would have when they were so good through the 2000s.

Seems like cherry-picking to count the Fiesta as part of a grand slam since the win occurred out of the BCS era. In 1986, the Cotton Bowl was considered a bigger deal than the Fiesta.
