Kurt Wermers, Academically Ineligible

"Former Michigan offensive lineman Kurt Wermers was academically ineligible when he announced his transfer to Ball State last week, sources told ESPN.com.

Wermers cited disagreements with head coach Rich Rodriguez and Michigan's assistant coaches as the primary reason for his decision to transfer. In an interview with The Times of Northwest Indiana, Wermers said he didn't get along with Rodriguez's staff or the types of players they were recruiting.

He even echoed former Michigan offensive lineman Justin Boren, who cited eroding family values as a reason for his transfer to Ohio State.

"Coach Carr's staff was a whole different ballgame," Wermers told the newspaper, referring to former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr. "It was like a family. But when Rodriguez came in it was a whole different feeling. It was more of a business.

"I figured I'd get out while I could."

But according to sources with knowledge of the situation, Wermers was already out.

His academic struggles would have prevented him from suiting up with the Wolverines. Wermers wasn't even enrolled in summer school at the time of his departure.

The 6-foot-5, 289-pound Wermers did not see action in any games for Michigan in 2008."

I would've put this on the board if I could and I don't see it on their yet, so I thought I might as well make a diary post of this.

Maybe there is no room in the new Michigan family for people who don't conduct themselves with honesty and character.

If this story turns out to be true, even more credit to RR for letting the firestorm hit and run its course without running to the media with his (or the program's) own version of events.

Well, this makes Wermers look bad.

Maybe someone can clear this up for me. If he is academically ineligible here, wouldn't he be academically ineligible at Ball State? It is an NCAA thing not an individual school thing correct? I mean I know he has to sit out for a year now that he transferred, but he can't even practice with the Ball State team at this point right?

I think the NCAA standards are to admit the lowest grade levels and such. But remember that many schools have their standards to uphold too. Like Stanford or Michigan, you have to have at least decent grades to get in or other wise, Stanford could offer anyone they want and get whoever considering their campus is one of the best, academically one of the best in the USA, and its in nice weather.

I also agree that it's better to rise above all the petty comments by disgruntled people. Don't give them credibility by responding.

It's also probably a good idea from a legal standpoint not to release info on Wermer's academics. That can get you in trouble with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), a federal law that prevents a school from releasing student info except in certain circumstances.

Point was that ESPN.com had the story on its front page. (Not frowning on posting articles)

MLive has the story and links to espn (looks like Rittenburg "broke" the story).

However, I highly doubt ESPN College Football Live does a full day of Wermers bashing like it did a full day of RR bashing when he announced his family-values transfer

He must have been referring to the possiblility that his 1.5 gpa might still transfer to Ball State --

I hope he does well there. But, if this isn't the poster child for why kids should just shut the f--- up, I don't know what would be.

He should have transferred to East Lansing Comm College so he could get his grades up... I'm sure Dantonio wouldn't have minded the academic problems so long as he was taller than Mike Hart.

I had been in the "this a 19 year old kid making a dumbass comment" camp until I get home from work and saw this story. What a jackass. "I though I'd get out while I can"?????? Frickin' liar. How about: "I thought I'd get out cause I'm too dumb to stay." I hope this kid never sees the field again.

I admit at first I bought into the idea that maybe he wasn't getting along too well with some of his new teammates. Now, not only is he a bellyacher, he's also academically ineligible. What a fricking maroon. I wonder if he realizes that he's going to have to be academically eligible at Ball State in order to play. I mean, they're a MAC school and all that, but I'm sure they have academic standards for athletes as well.

I think the real bottom line is, he saw that he was falling off academically, he saw that more talented (and dedicated) players were moving ahead of him, so he decided to cut and run. Well, maybe not run .. but at least WADDLE away.

Buh bye ... enjoy Muncie.

The high road here. When men are young, they can do and say all kinds of stupidity because of the mixing up of their brains, mouths, and penises.
Clearly, Wermers wasn't getting laid while on capus, though. If he could possibly have found himself a future wife (so he wouldn't face the harshness of graduating college without a family and being so old), he'd probably still be on the team. As it is, he now has to follow in David Letterman's footsteps.

that a 19 year old shouldn't be held accountable for what they say. We are not talking about an 8 year old here, Wermers is at least 19 (perhaps older, I don't know) so I am not sure slack should be cut for a man of his age lying through his teeth.

I think every 19 year old knows it isn't right to lie but given certain circumstances may think it best to do so; like say when you have committed a crime and are asked about it. Lying isn't right then either but you can see why someone would do it.

In this case it was simply that this idiot didn't want people to know that he was not smart enough to make a go of it at UM so he made up this BS to make them look bad for hurting his feelings.

As far as I am concerned I am wishing no good luck to this bum on his departure and hope the door hits his fat ass on t he way out!
