The Student Section Yesterday Was Fantastic - Giving Credit Where Credit Is Due

Submitted by mGrowOld on

Other than a few stray empty seats here or there (which has been explained as result of students moving down low) the student section yesterday was full.  They were (almost all) on time and they were loud as hell - even louder than usual I might add. They added more energy and electricity to the game than usual and created an insanely hostile and noisy environment for OSU to play in.  And, when the game ended, the rushed the field just like we used to do back in the day.

What a great, great day.  I have no voice left and my feet are sore from standing all day (there were no cries of "down in front" in section 3 yesterday) and I'm proud as hell of the players, the coaching staff and especially the students for all doing their part to Beat Ohio.

Job well done!

It seemed fairly loud on television, but how loud was the entire crowd for real? Better than usual, same, not as loud as it should have been? Just saying that the entire crowd should be as loud as the student section.

Either way, we won and that is all that matters.

The students definitely brought it yesterday.  Loudest I have ever heard.  Not sure if they started the Beat Ohio chant while the ohio band was playing but that was awesome.  I'm torn on how I feel about them rushing the field.  I hate that ohio will feel a sense of pride that we rushed the field after beating them, but I think after 7 LONG years, we all felt like we had won that game and all 114,000 deserved to be celebrating together at midfield after that win.

Prior to The Game, I had posted on here about not rushing the field.

I think the way it unfolded, though, was appropriate.  The Game was dramatic (too dramatic IMHO) and the students waited until after the players had a chance to celebrate.  It wasn't mayhem, or "OMG I can't believe we won and I'm running onto the field and tearing down the goal posts".  It was just a celebration on the field after the game.

Ohio State fans rushed the field both times they beat us in the 90's.  They rushed the field when they beat our 3-9 team in 2008.  That was the worst squad in school history.

People make too much out of this issue.  We rushed the field every time we beat OSU in the 70's and we were one of the most dominant teams in college football that decade.  We rushed the field after beating an awful Purdue team in 1982 because it got us the Rose Bowl bid.  Let's put this issue to rest.  It's no big deal.

I was worried about the student section since it sounded like not many people were going to come back to Ann Arbor during Thanksgiving break.  Glad I was wrong.

  10-2 season , wins over 2 out of 3 rivals , undefeated home schedule, a possible BCS bowl AND THE FIRST WIN OVER OSU IN 7 YEARS?!!?!! If you don't rush the field after that , then just don't rush the field ever! Hell i hoped they enjoyed the experience, don't you know the world ends in 2012 so it was our last chance...../s

definitely celebrate on the field. Some crotchety bitches were purposefully impeding progress towards the field - lighten up! Probably the same people who dont cheer. All in all, some of the most fun I've at at Michigan Stadium in years and end-to-end the most electric since '97 for me.

What was the inside story about rushing the field?  I have not seen that in a looong time.

Was it "taken by force", or did they just let everyone come down since it was the last game?

They have been pretty militant about not letting anyone on the field since they lowered it and essentially fenced it off in '91.  No arrests, injuries, that kind of thing, I hope?

Good job, BTW.

Maybe it's the fuzzy memories of childhood many years later, but i started going in the late 70's (first game was vs. Indiana in 1979 at the age of five) and it seems like field rushing was fairly common. I remember lots of mayhem on the field after games ... then again, i remember playing pick-up football in the stadium on basketball game days too so maybe i'm just old.

It's tough for me to tell since I am usually up in row 85 and all of the noise is projected down, but for those closer to the field and across from the student section, was that louder than ND?

I had the same seats for both games, and while the UTL crowd was probably louder toward the end (after the V Smith touchdown and Roundtree touchdown), I'd say the crowd yesterday was louder for longer stretches on D throughout the game.

I definitely agree that this game was much louder over the course of the game than UTL. I think it was also the case that UTL was slightly louder near the end of the game (btw I was in the same seats for both games). Two reasons for this:
<br>
<br>1. We were playing from behind a lot of the game against Notre Dame, and the comeback at the end made it even more significant to yell. ND did a good job of keeping the crowd out of it for many parts of UTL.
<br>
<br>2. But even more significant, because of the constant battle thoughout the game yesterday, people (including myself in the student section) were beginning to lose their voices near the end. I already lost my upper range of voice by halftime. This still didn't stop me from screaming as hard as I could after the Avery interception, but I doubt much sound came out of my mouth. I know others around me were yelling as hard as they could in the last few minutes of the game, but people's voices were already lacking by then.
<br>
<br>Not to say the game wasn't loud at the end of the game yesterday, because it was absolutely insane. I just think the noise factor was more consistent yesterday, and slightly louder at the end for UTL.

I love da3mite's second point.  Reminds me of when my buddy used to do the goalie-sieve chant at hockey games (MILLLLLER . . . SIEVE) until he could basically no longer speak.

And I also think the back-and-forth nature of the game made for a consistently loud stadium, but the ending was one in which we celebrated a win that we sealed at the end and not a come from behind win.  I think the intensity of the noise is different in those two scenarios.  Maybe it's a function of the change in your expectations.  In a come from behind scenario, you feel really low and then you're suddenly brought up really high.  In the winning but seal the victory scenario, you feel pretty good (though are still tense); the sealing play brings you up to the same level of happiness, but you didn't climb as far on the way.

I still remember exactly what the stadium sounded like when Manningham caught the TD against PSU in 2005.  That was the loudest I remember it.  Runner-up was Phill Brabbs FG against Washington.  (I was not at ND this year though - I don't doubt that it was louder then).  But I was happiest after this game and OSU in 2003, because nothing feels better than beating the very essence of evil.

The student section looked awesome on tv. And it was full when the game started. Good work, particularly for a game on thanksgiving weekend. I'm sure that makes it harder for a substantial number of the students to make it back for the game.

So . . . let me get this straight.  Your wife endorses your infantile following of a college sports team.  So much so that she actually buys clothing for herself with the logo of said team.  Not just any clothing, but a skimpy bikini.  She then proceeds to let you take suggestive pictures of her wearing the bikini.  Then, she lets you post these exploitative pictures of her . . . on the internet?

You sir, are a lucky man.

Back to the future. That was a student section yesterday. "Beat Ohio" is a bit PC. Another four letter word rhymes better with Bucks, but that's probably too old school for today.

And the goalposts are still standing.

But, practice will make perfect.

It was so packed in that my feet were pointed to the Ohio sideline.  There wasn't even enough room for me to sit down at halftime.

I did see two two signs that made me laugh-  The Sistine Chapel "Creation of Adam" with Denard and Hoke's faces and a block O strategically placed.  The other probably in bad taste was Tressel/Sandusky 2012.

They stepped up when needed most. Yesterdays atmosphere felt just line UTL. I even caught myself enjoying pop evil for a second. What has happened to me? Go Blue.

Funny you mention Pop Evil.  To the everlasting shame of the rest of the board it seems I kinda like it.  BUT....only when played at the proper time which is not when the team is running out on the field at the beginning of a game.  No...the proper time is after a thrilling, last second win (after the Victors of course) like they did yesterday and after UTL.  When I watch the You Tube of the end of UTL with the that song blasting and the pom poms flying and it still gives me major chills.  Just like it did when i was there.  And just like it did yesterday!

Those fourth down plays in the fourth quarter when Braxton was pretty close to the student section is as loud as the big house gets. Overall I think UTL was a bit louder, but yesterday at the beginning and end up the game was deafening. I also put our comeback vs. Wisconsin in 09 up there in terms of noise.

Student section was fantastic.  I just want to point out that once again the red sections weren't really in the student section.  Especially considering it was Thanksgiving break, the students did a great job in avoiding selling to Buckeyes and bringing the noise.

Heck, even the alumni did good yesterday, but I think this is a perfect example for why people need to stop hating on the student section.  When they are needed they get up and the "seas of red" are in the rest of the stadium (though there wasn't much red saturday).

This game was a lot louder throughout the game than Under the Lights. The last two touchdowns against ND were probably a little louder, but the whole game wasn't close. The student section was out for blood yesterday.

I was really impressed that "Beat Ohio" drowned out the script Ohio song 25 minutes before kickoff.

A student section showing up on time and being loud in a game of this magnitude really should not be remarkable.

Reminds me of the Chris Rock bit: "I take care of my kids ... You're supposed to take care of your kids!!! I ain't never been to jail ... You're not supposed to go to jail!!!"

I was one of the ones "giving crap" last week so I though it was only fair to acknowledge the fact that this game, despite the holiday, was dramatically better and worthy of praise.

I think a big part of why some students were late the last few weeks is because of how long it actually takes to get into the Big House. I got to the gates at 11:30 like usual and it took 35 minutes to get into the stadium. I feel like at a different sporting event it would take 15 minutes or less (obviously the Big House is bigger). How are the south entrances? I've only ever gone in through the North

What a game.  Student section (and whole stadium) was on fire.  The fact the stadium gets loud adds a whole new dynamic.  UTL was louder at the end, but OSU was loud the whole way through. "Beat Ohio" chant during OSU band was incredible. Favorite part for me was when "Don't Stop Believing" was playing and fans were aggressively shaking their yellow pom-poms to the song while singing loudly.   Fearsome!

Look what beating ohio has done for this board, no more bickering or infighting, just lots of love, they really are the source of evil. sports are awesome.

As a student I thank you for this. Trust me we wanted that win just as bad as everyone else after these past few years of suffering. This team and this school deserved it so much. Just doing our part.
