November 22

Today is the 22nd of November and some memorable victories over the Buckeyes happened on this date.

*8 years ago today was the 100th meeting.  Keith Jackson insisted on coming out of "retirement" to call the game. Like a throwback to so many meetings of the past, the winner would get the outright big ten title.  This was our last victory over OSU.  (As someone who grew up watching us beat the Bucks every year, it hurts like hell to even type that out.)  John Navarre threw for 278 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Both TD passes were to Braylon Edwards.  Chris Perry ran for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Final: Michigan 35 Ohio State 21

*14 years ago today, #1 Michigan faced off against #4 Ohio State.  David Boston's words leading up to the game: "If our offense and defense are clicking, we should win by 2-3 touchdowns.  We're going up there and upsetting them.  I think we're better than Michigan.  Also, Charles Woodson can claim to be the best player in the world all he wants but he's no Antoine Winfield.  Winfield is as good as Woodson and certainly faster."  The game?  Well, we know what Woodson ended up doing that day.

*25 years ago today, #5 Michigan went into Columbus needing a victory to go to Pasadena.  The week leading up to the game, Wolverine quarterback Jim Harbaugh said, "We're going to play in the Rose Bowl this year, I guarantee it.  We'll beat Ohio State and we'll be in Pasadena on January 1st."  Lloyd Carr, on the coaching staff at the time, remembered thinking, "Oh GOD.  Bo's going to kill Harbaugh when he finds out about that statement."  When Bo did find out, he shrugged his shoulders and said, "O.K.  We just have to be sure to back up Harbaugh's word."  Thanks to a wide left field goal by OSU in the final minute, that ended up being the case.  The win made Bo Michigan's all time winningest coach.  Harbaugh threw for 261 yards and Jamie Morris ran for 216 yards and 2 touchdowns.

*31 years ago today, Michigan and Ohio State, once again, played for the outright Big Ten title and trip to the Rose Bowl.  The Michigan defense, which had gone 14 straight quarters without giving up a single point, held the Buckeyes to a field goal all game.  It was Bo's third straight victory in Columbus and Bob Ufer's final UM/OSU game in the broadcast booth.  Butch Woolfolk ran for 143 yards.  Larry Ricks and Stan Edwards added another 80.  The game's only touchdown was a 17 yard strike from John Wangler to Anthony Carter.  Ali Haji-Sheikh missed the extra point.

*42 years ago today was the big one.  The game that many believe will always be the greatest win in school history.  #1 Ohio State, riding a 22 game winning streak and regarded as Woody's best team ever went to Ann Arbor to face Michigan under first year coach Bo Schembechler.  Does this game even need a recap?  Billy Taylor, Garvie Craw, John Gabler and quarterback Don Moorhead (who, up until his retirement last year was my nephew's gym teacher at Paw Paw High School).  As Bob Ufer noted, "22 Michigan Wolverines put on the gloves of gray, and as Revelli played the Victors, they laid Woody Hayes away."

Basketball should get us through Wednesday, and with an early start Saturday at that point you really only have to kill off two days.  A jug or two of grain alcohol may put a slight damper on work productivity, but it should be enough to do the trick.

I remember the game 42 years ago, it cemented Michigan as my favorite college football team and convinced me to apply.  Likewise, I remember the game 8 years ago as well, but for less fortunate reasons.

Charles Woodson's punt return is seared into my memory.  The greatest sports moment I've ever witnessed in person.

Will never forget the sight of Woodson streaking by a thunderstruck Ohio St sideline.

Will never forget the feeling of 100,000 Michigan fans jumping up and down on the bleachers, my whole section just imploded on itself and nobody cared.

Will never forget the sound of 100,000 Michigan fans belting out the victors.

I want to feel that again and I want it so desperately to happen this Saturday.

I was 11 years old. I remember laying on my parents' floor in Clare, MI hugging a pillow watching this game as if it was the only thing in the world that mattered at that moment. We were up north for Thanksgiving the following Thursday. My grandmother was still alive then. I remember her house tucked in the woods secluded from the rest of the world. This moment was what I always knew Michigan football to be. It is one of the many reasons I am a fan. I will never forget the near-fight between Woodson and Boston. The punt return. The sheer brilliance of that defense that M had displayed all season long. And Charles holding the rose between his teeth after the win. It was truly a magical time. This post makes me smile as I try not to well up about such a happy memory.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Thanks for the memory WH.

My favorite play of that game was Woodson's interception in the end zone. Dee Miller had beaten him on the last play and was jawing at him like crazy. Next play he picks it off and I'll never forget how quickly he darted back up and looked right in Miller's direction. PURE OWNAGE.

I'll never forget Jason Avant limping off the field in the beginning of the 2003 game. He knew he was done for that game and he was so broken up about it. It somehow gets dusty wherever I am when I watch the play.
