Disappointment of no recruiting buzz

Submitted by BILG on
Given our sweet early recruiting returns and solid season thus far, the only thing that seems out of whack is that we arent getting more positive vibes from undecided recruits. Looking at you brionte dunn! Anyone else a little surprised by lack of further developments or buzz from recruits? I know we are still in it for a bunch of top recruits, but i would love to be hearing the constant good news that was coming in back in september. Any predictions on who else we land and if our class remains top 5?

Little OT but since people are referencing Freddie J. My brother in law was at a little league football game in which Fred Jackson's 12ish year old son was playing QB. Supposedly the kid is a phenom with a great arm and looks like he could be a HS QB right now. Wouldn't that be fun

I agree with the post above, I feel AJ Williams will go to OL and we dont push as hard for one of those last guys, but if they want to come of course we take.  Dunn, Thompson, Payton, Diggs...I would love that shizzle.

Is Thompson seriously considering us?.....he would be a freakin big time get.  I love me some Marvin Robinson hitting ability but he looks slow out there, I feel like at safety, we need more help for next year.

Question, what are people thoughts on Furman, you think he has potential to be a starter next year?

On Thompson:  That is still up in the air.  The coaches wanted him to visit for a non-football week so that they can get more time with him and see if the interest is real.

On Furman:  No, is the simple answer.  If he is the starter that means he is beating out a senior Jordan Kovacs or Thomas Gordon.  They both have more experience than him.

Wait until after the OSU game. We have a lot of high profile guys coming in we want, and we should here news about them afterwards. Don't forget diggs and Thompson will be showing up a few weeks after the OSU game. My gut feeling tho tells me we get 2 commits after that game, and 2 more on NSD. Dunn & Diggs on NSD, wright and ???? After osu.

considering the spots we have left (4) and the high profile of the kids we are recruiting for those spots said kids can only say so much about a school or well..they may as well commit.

Look at Payton we basically "buckled up" for his commitment because he was saying all the right things but then he was all like "whoa" and he still hasnt committed.

These last four are big fish, big fish like to be reeled in real slow like.

that this exact thread would be started around this time of year since we  had 348 recruits commited at that time. We only have so many slots,we can't get commitments every 2 weeks. can we????

Most of the lack of buzz has been because we are focusing on fewer prospects now that our class is mostly filled out. I will also say that it has probably seemed quieter around here now that TomVH has left. That is to say, even if there is some buzz, we're not hearing as much of it.

would be a nice way to close out the class. I don't think we need another O-lineman in this class (WRs are much more needed). I guess if Banner or Garnett wanted to come on board, I am not sure if the coaches would turn them down, but we need a couple of fast/big receivers for sure.

Would someone who's plugged into the recruiting world be willing to give a % chance estimate for each of the big targets left? Don't reveal any specific paysite information - just give us a sense if how you feel about the probabilities.

and to steal another top prospect from ohio I wonder if the coaches offered Drake Johnson because things with Dunn stalled or looked unlikely.  I know Houma and Drake are projected as "FBs" but taking 3 backs with so few spots remaining this year seems odd. Only 2 of these kids usually play at a time and when we already have Drob and Fitz and Smith and FB Hopkins playing, and Rawls and Hayes waiting, and Houma and Drake on deck if we take Dunn this year too we could have more backs than receivers pretty soon.

I really don't see Houma as a FB either because he has so much ability in open space and catching outof the backfield but I see them playing that role initially, and in the return game, and then transitioning to other roles in the backfield later. Drake will improve alot at Michigan but initially his lack of cutting ability and his overt desire to simply run into and overpower kids (even in open space)  and his ability to hurdle, and his great initial burst on top of his size seem to make him ideal for short yardage or goalline packages. In time I think his cutting ability will improve and combined with his great speed will help him feature more in the offense, but he has a great ability to run through contact right now so that's what I think they'll use first.

??????????????

Dunn will go blue eventually.

We're in it with Diggs, a top 10 recruit nationally.

We're in it with Yuri Wright, a top 100 CB.  And we're still in it for Banner, Diamond, Garnett, Payton, Darboh, and others... we only have a few spots left, wtf do you expect?

So, to get to 28 recruits, three of them have to be early enrollees that can be counted against the previous year's recruiting class.

Are there already three current commits who are planning to enroll early, or do one or more of the final four spots need to be filled by an early enrollee?

Why do three have to be EE? The B1G lets teams oversign by 3. You can backdate EEs, which might be cool because I'm pretty sure we had a relatively small incoming class this season. But I think we can sign 28 and be just fine even if none enroll early. Am I totally missing something?

WolvinLA2

I think you just misunderstand the rule.  The Big Ten limit is 25 per class, but EEs can be applied toward either the year before or the year of.  So, if your previous class had less than 25 (or at least less than 25 that counted toward that year) you can backdate that many EEs, up to a limit of 3, for a total of 28.

Let's say last year we took 24, one of which enrolled early.  That would mean this year would could take 27, if at least two enrolled early.  In that scenario, 27 would be the hard cap.

Since we only took 21 last year, we can take the max of 28 as long as three early enroll.  If no one enrolled early, we could only take 25.

The interesting part of this is that if we take 28 guys and 3 enroll early, that means we would have a hard cap of 25 next year, no matter what, since we couldn't back date anyone.

??? Considering that our targets are either still playing in their respective playoffs or have just concluded their seasons, I'm not surprised at all myself. They've had their minds elsewhere over the past month as their seasons have entered the final weeks; dealing with committing would be a bit of a distraction.

Don't worry. We'll get some and lose others, but we've got a great class.

Coaches have given all types of hints they want: 2 WR's and 1 OL.

WR (2): Darboh, Payton, Diggs, Chessuon (spelling?), and Madaris.

OL (1): Garnett (long shot), Banner (nope), or Diamond (no idea)

Now if I were to bet I'd say we grab 2 WR's as planned and probably miss out on those lineman. Leaving the next best prospects avaliable:

Dunn, Yuri, or no idea at this point.

Also, I think our best shot for the next commit is Darboh on his offical if his family comes with.

Do the math. Only a handful of slots remain open and they're all being help for blue-chip prospects, most of whom drag out the process till the end.

I would compare our recruiting situation to kids opening up their gifts early on Christmas Eve.  They wake up the next morning and find only a few things left.  That doesn't mean that those "gifts" won't be the 5* variety though.

Stating the obvious.

  • We have 24 commits
  • We just got a RB named Drake Johnson
  • HS Football is still going on, no one is going to make a decision while they're in the playoffs
  • After the year, there may be a couple commits, but most elite talent that wait this long, wait until AA Bowls-Signing Day
  • We haven't had any big "visit days"
  • A lot of guys planned visits for this weekend and definitely OSU weekend
  • We're more selective at this point
  • Coaches are more focused on the team PLAYING than recruiting (not taking a break, but there is only so much time in the day)
  • We haven't really lost anyone we targeted that was out there before the season
  • OSU's sanctions still are not out
  • There is still just under 3 months until Signing Day

Diggs, Wright and then an unnamed steal in January along with a Dunn, Payton, Brown or Darboh (Any Combination of two). Clearly, Diggs and Dunn have got to be the targets 1a and 1b right now. After that I think were decent...I think Wright is coming in December and commits once he sees what its like to play for Mattison while watching Bowl Practice. I wouldnt be surprised to see Diggs there also with a commitment in January at the Army Game. Dunn may go with TSIO if there is a guy named Urban Meyer there in December/January. Hope not, would love to see Dunn suit up Blue! As for this weekend against Nebraska...this I believe is a must win. Second in Legends...not bad and a guaranteed Capital One/Outback. A

Here is why I think there hasn't been much of a recruiting buzz as of late:

June 1 - Aug. 31: Quiet period

Quiet period is a time when the college may not have any in-person talk with the prospective student-athlete or the parents off the college's campus. The coach may not watch the prospect play or practice. The prospective student-athlete can visit college campuses during this time and a coach may write or telephone.

Sept. 1 - Nov. 26: Evaluation period

Evaluation period is the time a college coach may watch a prospective student-athlete play or visit the high school but cannot have any in-person conversations with the possible recruit or the parents off the college's campus. The prospective student-athlete and the parents can visit a college campus during this period and a coach may call or write during this period.

Here is a link with a glossary of terms, if you're not already familiar with them in regards to recruiting.
