Attempt to change the "You Suck" chant after Temptation to "Hoke Smash"

Submitted by ILwolverine on

I came across this on Facebook this morning.  Some people created an event for this Saturday to try and change the "You Suck" after Temptation to "Hoke Smash".  I know that it has been discussed here before, and that there are people who did not like the "You Suck".  I am not sure if "Hoke Smash"  is perfect, but I definitely like it more than "You Suck".  It will be interesting to see if there is even a noticable difference on Saturday (unlikely), but there are over 600 people listed as attending.  Just figured I would do my part to spread the news.

The "You suck" chant following Temptation has been around since 2002?  I don't ever remember hearing it until 2006 in back to back to back games against Iowa, Northwestern and Brady Hoke's Ball State team.

The hot dog man was really popular with the students in those games as well.

Do you happen to have an un-WH'd version of the 2003 ND game? My working hypothesis is that the 38-0 beatdown Michigan laid on ND caused the YSC to arise organically because it was a dominating win over a traditional rival.

The crowd is *loud* on the first drive of that 2nd half, too. I have to imagine that - if you were listening - you'd start to hear the first strains of "You Suck" right as your vid cuts to Michigan's first second-half drive.

Edit: I can confirm that you're right on the nail with Hot Dog Man being at (and being popular at) that Ball State game that was way closer than it should've been.  Unfortunately, that was also his last appearance, as he got hauled away and, presumably, threatened?  Anyway, excellent historian-work!

As much as the chant is low life, it sometimes is stupid, as in those instances over the last few years when we were down by three or four T's and we're telling the other team that they suck.

Somebody just brought up a good point.  Will we still be saying "You suck!" to Air Force when we play them next year?  That's just all sorts of wrong.

It's better if we change it now because there's no way everybody is going to suddenly change it for one game.

Trying to change a tradition (even if a more recent one) is ridiculous.  It's something that obviously has stuck across 8 years of classes coming in.  That's quite a testament in todays fast change environment.

Go Blue would be fine, but I think it needs something more impactful at the end other than just yelling Go Blue.  How about:

Goooooooooo

Gooooooo Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue

Gooooooo Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue, Go Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue

Goooooooooo

Gooooooo Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue

Gooooo Bluuuuuuuuuuuuuue, Gooooo Bluuuuuuuuuuuuue, Gooooo Bluuuuuuuuuuue

YOU SUCK!!

Not as bad as Texas, where the WHOLE STADIUM (kids and adults alike) sings "Texas Fight" with the words, "Give 'em hell, give 'em hell, make 'em eat shit!"

I go to at least one UT game a year. Obviously not a UT fan, but I live here and the tickets are good and free.  Every time UT starts their "Texas, Fight" song, I start yelling,  "what's with all the fighting? Can't we all just get along?"  The guy who gets me the tickets loves me at that moment.

Instead of "you suck" they use to yell "defense"   My daughter told me that it changed about ten years ago when she was a sophmore.  I like the original "defense"

You're right, "You suck" is far too crass and ungentlemanly. I humbly submit we replace the cheer in question with a hearty "Our esteemed opponents, your attempts to obtain the requisite yards for a first down have come to nought!"

Also, the "chop" motion causes me to spill my Perrier. A pox upon it!

yelling "you suck" with 113,000 other people is pretty fun. I don't care if you think "we're above it" and frankly, chanting hoke smash is stupid. would you sing "hoooooke smaaaaaash, hooooke smaaaash"? I gave that 4 lames out of 5 and I will continue to yell "you suck" anyway (unless we're losing)

but my bet is it only lasts for this one game and then everyone else continues to do the You Suck chant.

As people have pointed, "You Suck" is not near as vulger as what other schools chant.

I up voted for changing the "you suck" and down voted for changing it to "Hoke Smash".

When I was a child, my father brought me to Michigan Stadium. We sat in Section 11. When the officials made a particularly bad call, the student section would rather loudly chant, "Buuullllll Sh!t." Like the cleaning lady who had sex with Costanza on his desk dreamed of cashmere, I too, had a dream. My dream was to go to school at the University of Michigan, get student tickets, and be able to participate in the B.S. cheer. Sadly, by the time I made it to school, the chant had been wiped out. Throwing toilet paper on the field after TDs was another tradition from the 70's that I had dreamed of that didn't make it to the late 80's. Instead, we got marshmallows, which were OK until people started putting pennies inside them. But I digress. I really am of two minds about the whole You Suck cheer. My inner 7-year-old child likes it, my 41 year-old mind doesn't. I have become a blue hair. FML.

If everyone else in the stadium started the Go Blue thing, it would eventually catch on with the students. This is something that the 90% of non-students in the stadium on any given Saturday could have done years and years ago. If you're at the games, and you think the "you suck" is lame and juvenile, shout "Go Blue!" at the end. I bet by the end of the game you won't be the only person in your section doing it.

That might be true at a place like Wisconsin (where the school has tried unsuccessfully for years to get them to stop chanting "Eat Shit!" "Fuck You"), but our students aren't mindless rebels.  When the university pushed for people to stop throwing marshmallows after we went to Fieldturf,  the students cooperated immediately.  If the other 80% of the crowd is chanting one thing, the students will come around to it.  To chant something else (and thus garble everything up) would just be counterproductive.

The best part is when people totally fail at the arm movement. Like when they go way too fast or their arm is up when the whole student section is down. Like really? Is it that hard for you to keep a rythym?

Given that "Temptation" is also played at basketball and hockey games, the chant can't be football-specific.

I do think it should be something different than "You suck" though.  If it were "Go Blue!" I think you'd hear the entire stadium chant it, instead of just the students.

Switching from "you suck" will definitely happen if, instead of playing temptation, they blare "In the Big House" each time. That would have some here begging for the revised temptation.

I think "go blue" is better than "Hoke Smash" as well. If we want a new longstanding tradition, it should be transcendent of who is coaching at the time. Even if we had the next JoePa, it may not be a good idea.

same people who complain about standing up during games are now complaining about the chants!?!? give me a break.  Let the students have fun and you lame fans should just go watch tennis if you cant handle a real man's sport.

but I have a hard time getting all pissy about a "you suck" chant.   I can't help but yell all sorts of profanity following our weekly silly fumble so it' s not like the people around me are going to have a much less explicit experience if I stop saying "suck".  It's a college football game for fuck's sake.

I can't believe I just wasted time reading all these posts. Do you think it really matters Russ? Who gives a rip about what is said after the song? Just looking for Ws. Let's go back to complaing about the piped in music because that really matters too.

I've never understood why "You Suck" is so offensive or "lame."  If you watch network television after 7PM on a weeknight, there is zero reason to take offense to the phrase "you suck."

yeah "you suck" is beat.  that chant didn't exist when I went to UM in the lat 80s and early 90s.  not sure who came up with it but it's a tasteless representation of our school.  wish it changed.

why the negbang?  This is a fantastic idea and so much better than "You Suck" on so many levels.  What would it take to make the change effective - that might be near impossible.  However, if there are 600 people who follow the "Hoke Smash", I bet others would pick up on it.  It is much more fun, more original, and the Hoke-shirt-rip-ARRGGHHH would be beautifully odd.
