OT-Spread Punt in the NFL
Yelling at the tv while D. Hester was running punts back all over the place it occurred to me a rugby punt would be ideal in these situations and seeing that they have unlimited time to practice this in the NFL it is surprising it is not used.
Since I'm just a guy on the couch, I'm guessing the punt rules in college and the pros are different, but I still think it works even if you can only get 2 gunners loose.
What do you think? It can't be worse than what the Lions attempted yesterday.

I'm reasonably certain the loophole that allows everyone to be a gunner in punting situations doesn't exist in the NFL, and that's the major advantage.

Yep, only the "ends" and the long snapper are allowed to release before the kick in the NFL. There's no advantage to spreading out your punt unit and in fact, would be a huge detriment in protecting against the punt block.

how about: don't punt to Hester? DONT PUNT TO HESTER.

I'm a Bears fan, so please keep kicking it to Hester.

It was epic fail to put the ball anywhere in the vicinity of Hester once, let alone more than once. It amazes me how coaches ignore the obvious and the Lions were terrible in every facet yesterday, and then the head coach makes excuses.
