I'm convinced Devin will get his redshirt, and that's why he didn't play the first four games. Given how the offense is working now, it seems strange that they didn't even sample Devin in the Eastern game. At the time the explanation of getting Denard some throws seemed reasonable, but given how Gardner has been featured it's odd they wouldn't have tried that earlier.

IIRC, there's some precedent for the NCAA granting only a partial medical redshirt because a player played a few games (http://mgoblog.com/content/stuff-happened; http://www.ledger-enquirer.com/2011/07/29/1674966/alabama-football-darius-hanks.html). My guess is that Devin sitting out the first four games of 2012 was to give him a full season "medical" redshirt, in effect (Game 5 of 2010 season thru Game 4 of 2011 season). If the NCAA wants to enforce some kind of 2-for-1 penalty, Devin would have to sit out 2 more games (since he appeared in 3 games in 2010) before his final season. Unless the NCAA says that the games sat out have to be consecutive...

For those going absolutely NUTS when we had signed 20 guys before anyone could say "MANBALL"...it all worked out. That class of 23-24 can now grow to 28 with NO problems.

I thought there was going to be a few other guys not getting a 5th year...I was banking on Cox, Mealer, Moore and possibly Floyd (going into the season) as guys that weren't coming back. I still don't think Cox comes back. Mealer, it'll be his call I think. Moore...sorry, I won't go there, some of you guys know how I feel about his poor play and inabilities thus far this year.

I also figured Isaiah Bell and Terrence Talbott as transfers...so there are 2 more scholarship I was thinking we may have.

With that said, there should be 1 or 2 scholarships to give to walk-ons for a year and then use those for the following recruiting class.

is why it's inappropriate to speculate about specific players unrenewed 5th years.  Some of these kids read Mgoblog and to hear fans disrespect their contribution and hard-work is well...unnecessary.  Especially as related to a premature numbers crunch that's way off in the future.

There is no way Mealer is not asked back. He's a capable player and given that non-freshman OL depth is extremely thin next year, he'd be a welcome 'addition' to the roster.  At the very least Mealer allows you to red-shirt more of the OL class.  More likely, he's a valuable contributer.

In no way was that disrespectful...certainly there is a line. But I didn't cross it. Man up. It's an internet message board. It was completely opinion.

Nowhere did I say it was going to happen. I didn't even advocate that it happen. But face it, it's college athletics...these a big boys. We were facing a numbers crunch for a long time and it was well documented on this board that you referred to. In fact, Brian, the person who runs this board talks about it all the time with Michigan and other schools...mainly Nick Saban and Alabama.

If we signed 28 guys but only had 26 spots...it's natural for one to think "okay, where do those 2 scholarships come from." Just because it's a little harsh doesn't mean you need to cry to me about it. I don't want to hear it. These kids got their education paid for by the UNIVERSITY of MICHIGAN. I don't care if they play a down. That is a privilege in itself. Only a handful of people in the WORLD can have that honor. I recognize the blood, sweat and tears these kids of put in for the football program. At the same time, this is a football program and hopefully they earned their degree...there is no problem with wishing them well and thanking them for their contributions and letting them know they're always welcome at Michigan. Every coach in America has had to make that decision at some point. As long as it's not intentional, cruel and a blatant numbers game...it's part of football. Just like some kids getting cut from the 7th grade team. Not everyone can play.

The sissifacation of America, the sissifacation football...now the sissifacation of message boards.

Players are signed in February, not in the Fall.  Unrenewed 5th years are not going to be necessary in February - so what does the conjecture get you?  They may happen anyway, and coaches are well within their right to make that decision. Pointing out who you, message board poster, think might be a target does no one any good. Beside that, calling out kids who you think could/should be essentially cut after a couple games of their senior season is a dick move.

Anyway, it's not like any intelligent fan can't see the obvious candidates when they aren't playing, aren't listed on the depth chart, and getting passed by true freshman.  My definition of manhood isn't stating the obvious for no purpose.

How is it a dick move?

I didn't call anyone out...I stated who I thought might be gone, period.

Get off your high horse and quit acting like I EVER was calling for these guys' heads. They've busted their ass for Michigan...I've played football and I know that much. But the thread is about predicting who is here next year. I said my prediction. End of discussion..if you didn't agree, so be it. But it's not flaming. In fact, I just +1'd you because, that flamebait nonsense isn't my style. It's soft. Just like jumping on someone for saying his opinion, even if unpopular.

I'll tell you this. If Mealer or Moore is going to get bent out of shape because a message board poster says they might not be around next year. They have issues and shouldn't be at Michigan in the first place. They need to be listening to Coach Hoke, it's his opinion that matters...not mine. But that doesn't mean I can't state my opinion on a free message board.

Get over yourself.

If I'm reading that chart correctly, it appears the players in the first column have redshirted, right?  If so, thats pretty impressive that more than half of the class was able to redshirt.  I hope we see the same thing for the 2012 class.

Also, it seems to be common wisdom that this recruiting class will grow from 23 to 28.  Does anyone have any idea how large our 2013 recruiting class will be?  It appears that only 17 players (from the fourth column) are running out of eligibility.  Factor in another 5 to attrition or not being asked back and it seems like the number should be at least 22.  Does that sound right or are there other factors that will affect next years recruiting class?
