OSU/ND/MSU - Rivalry, Hatred, Dislike? Discuss

Submitted by StephenRKass on

I'd like to see comments & thoughts on the relative merits of OSU, ND, and MSU. Who is our rival? Who do you hate most? Despise? Respect? Other?

I remember hearing that Michigan always played hard against OSU, but respected them as a worthy opponent. I seem to recall the same as regards ND. MSU has had charges of playing dirty as a team.

For me, I would rank the following way:

1) OSU is our prime rival. I don't hate the team, but definitely want to beat them. It is hard for me to despise the coach. I don't like the fans at all.

2) ND, I like the Univ, want to beat the team, can't stand the coach, although I'm glad he is there (as it only helps us.)

3) MSU, I don't care for the coach, always want to beat the team, but it's hard to view them really as a rival.

Thoughts?

OSU- #1 rival, I hate them. I hope they lose every game possible, I never cheer for them.(Even before there 5 win streak)

MSU- #2 rival, I don't dislike them, I obviously hate them the week we play them. But, I hope they do good each season, just lose to Michigan.

ND- #3 rival, I don't care for them. Although, rudy was a good movie.

on the OSU being our primary rival, I don't think anyone would dispute that. As for respect, I am not sure there is a great deal of respect between the two teams. I think hatred better describes how they feel toward one another. It is easy for me to despise the sweatervest wearing geek that is Jim Tressel, he's a muppet! Oh, and the vast majority of their fans seem like back woods bone heads but I have talked to some who are reasonable, and even educated.

ND- Don't care for the University and can't stand the coach, but agree that he is only helping our cause. Fans of the Irish seem every bit as ignorant as most OSU fans which boggles my mind a bit as I always gave them more credit than that. I have seen in various message boards that they have proven to be every bit as ignorant and unreasonable as any OSU fan I have seen.

MSU- Coach is an ass but seems to moving the team in the right direction despite my opinion of him. I believe it is a rivalry because you have two instate schools battling it out. Up until last year it seemed pretty one sided but to me that doesn't mean it isn't a rivalry. If I am playing my older brother in any type of competition I am going to to anything I can to win. He generally will come out on top but it is certainly a friendly rivalry. I think it is the same here. Lets just hope big brother proves last year was a fluke and starts a new line of dominance over MSU in the future.

OSU-#1: for obvious historical reasons OSU is the prime rivalry. Also, they have the most annoying and classless fans in all of college sports:

Anecdote: When I was 16 I attended the BCS National Championship with my dad. I was wearing a florida hat and was walking to my car with my dad when i was assaulted by an Ohio State Fuck eye. The man (who must have been 40+ years old and was decked head-to-toe in stupid buckeye beads and a ohio state driver hat) approached me, got a few inches from my face, pushed me and screamed "NICE FUCKING HAT FAGGOT" and then kicked over a trashcan

#2- ND- South Bend is lame, ND fans bleed arrogance, and I think Rudy is annoying

#3-MSU- I am not from Michigan

A 40 year old man physically assaulted a 16 year old son with his father? Your father did nothing? Nobody did anything? You let some drunk 40 year old push you around?

#1. I hope we beat the breaks off them everytime we play them. Absolutlely loath OSU.

#2 MSU I dont mind a few good games every few years with MSU. We all live/work/go to school with a few sparties and its cool to talk shit leading up to and after the game.

#3 ND I dont know why, but for some reason I just don't care about ND as much as beating OSU and MSU. I almost dont like PSU more than ND.

My dad is the same way with Notre Dame. He's the utter definition of a "traditional" Michigan fan, the kind we all like to make fun of here with the "Rodriguez better start winning 10 games or I want him gone" stuff... but for some reason he wants to destroy Pen State every year. He could almost care less about ND.

Hmm, I expect wildly divergent answers here and a revealing look at our fanbase.

1. Ohio State - They're our primary rival, and as such there is a mix of hatred and respect. I want to see them fail. That goes fro Tressel, the fans and the university in general.

2. MSU - This is different. The hate is primarily geared toward their fans, who everyone in Michigan must put up with. I honestly don't consider them a rival in the same sense as OSU and Notre Dame, because we're rarely on the same level as them... instead it's more like a family feud. This is coupled with the fact that most out of state Michigan students (especially those who leave when their 4 years are up) don't give a crap about them period. So it's something of a complex relationship.

3. Notre Dame - This is pure "rivalry" in the literal sense of the word. I don't hate the Domers in the same way I do OSU or MSU... it's more about them being == to us in the tradition department. It's #1 vs #2 in all time wins. I'd hate them as much as I do now even if we never played them, just like everyone else does. So it's hard to put them up there with the other two.

Of course, this is just going with your list and not including our all time greatest rivals... the "University" (yeah, right) of Minnesota Ghey Nophers.

I won't root for OSU 95% of the time. If it's not a N.C. bowl game I'll root for them.

ND #2 I hate ND fans who think they've been anointed by God to be the best team ever. At least they back it up more often than...

MSU(#3)who talk smack all the time and really don't have much to back it up with.

Thank your for finally acknowledging this. The Univer$ity (if it can even be called that) of Minne$ucka Golden (shower) Geauxfur$ is by far the biggest rival. They have the worst, most ignorant, inbred fans that could possibly be raised from the deepest, blackest tarpits**, a coach with the mentality of a dog that has been hit in the head with a shovel daily, a burrowing cartoon rodent as a mascot and the colors of shit and piss.

And to top it off, those gueerphers are completely obsessed with us, so much so that they have a trophy case dedicated to the Little Brown Jug, which (as I understand it) is simply used as a convenient piss-pot for our second stringers during practice. Simply pathetic, all of 'em. I was borned hating them, and I will die hating them.

**I assume they have to be raised from the ground like Uruk-hai, because, like the Bene Tleilax, can you ever say that you've seen a womyn-borned-womyn Minne$sotan? Then again, they could easily be mistaken for men.

P.S. - in case sarcasm detectors are broken:
1. OSU
2. ND
3. MSU

that I agree OSU is our main rival. However, I honestly have a deeper hatred for MSU. Most of my UM friends have a hard time understanding this, but its true. Could be becuse I have close friends (unfortunately) who either went to or are fans of MSU, while I don't personally know anyone afilliated with OSU. I've also reasoned it this way: While I hate losing to both, I guess losing to OSU is "more acceptable" to me because they are at least usually a good team and a great program; while losing to MSU pisses me off more because I view them as inferior (little bro). Plus, nothing makes me happier than watching MSU botch away a game, and I will be highly upset if that trend is bucked.

So... OSU/MSU 1a/1b as far as rivals go, with ND being 3. While I hate the Irish, it is more of a Dallas Cowboys/NY Yankees kind of hate, where I just can't stand all the OVER coverage and them being on their own network, etc.

To sum up: F*** all three of them.

This one is easy:

MSU - Absolutely despise. If they never win another game in any sport, ever, I couldn't be happier. I hope the whole place burns to the ground someday, and someone plows the remains under with salt. MSU sports fans are the most obnoxious people I've ever encountered.

OSU - A worthy opponent on the athletic field, but woefully behind academically. I just wish we'd start beating them again in football.

ND - A decent rivalry. I root for them to lose, but not with much vigor.

#1 OSU
#2 MSU
#3 ND

OSU being number one is pretty obvious.

I had a tough time picking between MSU and ND, but gave MSU the nod for being the in state rival.

1. tOSU-hate them. best rivalry in college sports.
2. ND- meh. good traditional rivalry though.
3. State - fun in-state rivalry. great excuse for the entire state to tailgate together. have really hated them however the last 2 years.

I hope OSU wins every game leading up to The Game. If it could be like 2006 every year, that would great. So, I think that would be classified as respect.

I hope MSU loses every game. I think it's because of my closer personal relationships with some of the annoying portions of their fanbase. Call it strong dislike.

Sort of ambivalent towards ND. Obviously want to beat them, but I don't really care what happens in other games. This is where you picture me raising my hands, palms up and shrugging my shoulders, giving the universal signal for "meh." I've included a link to a picture of myself as a useful reference:

I like ND

MSU thinks they have found a new messiah in Dantonio. I would love for them to be just as effective as the John L smith years, they seem to hate ND much more than we hate them. So I understand the "little brother tag" just trying to be more relevant than they are.

OSU its a weird relationship between ND and OSU. We battle for a lot recruits every year (and normally head to head) but the only recent match-up was in 2005. Plus Tressel has actually been quoted as telling recruits that if they don't want to go to OSU they should take a look at ND. And there actually seems to be some mutual respect between us now. So I would just call it "odd"

It's an old Woody tactic. Tell kids to go to Notre Dame so they don't go to Michigan. Woody also refused to play Notre Dame as he felt it would detract from both OSU's fan support in the state (if the Catholic population cheered for ND) and that it would detract from the Michigan game.

DoctorWorm

July 13th, 2009 at 3:58 PM ^

Gee, I sure hope one day Michigan State will be as relevant as the Hawaii Bowl. Hopefully we'll be able to beat Big Brother Notre Dame this year, since we seem to be unable to ever pull it out in South Bend.

At least Michigan had a basis in reality for their arrogance over Michigan State.

Just promise me that when you guys lose, and you will lose, that you will still try to win a game or two after wards. Just because you didn't beat ND doesn't mean you can't go to the international bowl or something.

Now this - this is well-executed shit talkin'.

Has a strong basis in State's brittle institutional character (i.e., cockily reach for the stars, fall into a pile of shite), and has the condescending tone known to send Sparty into a spittle-flecked rage.

I have not seen an OSU fan pull something like this off.

STW P. Brabbs

July 13th, 2009 at 4:11 PM ^

See - this is a bit of what I'm talking about. One year in which the perfect storm of shit hits Michigan and MSU wins, and all of the sudden Michigan's basis for their arrogance is in past tense. Gonna take a couple more wins for that to happen.

And this is from DoctorWorm, who at the very least seems to have been a fairly stalwart supporter of the football team, so far as I know. I guarantee there are brahs who are talking shit for the first time in a long time since last year and are likewise crowing about the end of Michigan's dominance. These same brahs will fall back on the purported hotness of Sparty girls and Izzo* if state should happen to begin another losing streak to Michigan this year.

*Talking shit about Izzo generally, not his dwarflike yet rugged hotness

i live in NYC and have the unfortunate pleasure of meeting lots of ND folk and can honestly say i have yet to meet a decent irish fan. pompous, harks-back-to-ye-olde-days-in-yankee-esque-fashion... you know the drill.

while OSU types are a different brand of nasty, they are off plowing the field or sister or whatever they do in Ohio so i don't have much interaction with them. Also, they are largely illiterate and can't take to the internet except in hilarious broken english comments

But i do have a strange affinity for MSU. perhaps its because they contain the word 'michigan' and out here, where college sports mean zip, i find myself silently rooting for the team all my friends confuse with U of M anyway.

Beyond that, i think it's stupid to not root for the B10 as it only helps Michigan.

OSU #1- I hate OSU and winning this game can make up for otherwise mediocre seasons. Remember those 8-4 seasons that were salvaged with upsets of OSU?

ND #2- I hate the arrogance, I hate the special considerations they get. I hate their TV contract. I hate Tom Hammond. I hate Lou Holtz. The games are almost always close and come down to some field goal or some missed call from the officials.

MSU #3- I think the fans are our only rivals. MSU usually beats us once out of five years or so. Usually when we win, I shrug my shoulders and go that was expected. The fans are obnoxious and the biggest win in a current MSU fan's mind is Appy St. over us. They even forget they lost to us at home in the SAME SEASON. If Appy St. beat us at home, and we bet MSU on the road, doesn't the transitive property apply?

Don't worry MSU fans that last question was rhetorical.
