Jetpack, bitches. Jetpack.
I can't believe there isn't a thread about this yet. Anyone know anything about the dude who jetpacked into the stadium? Google search isn't turning up anything other than youtube videos. Who was he? What's the design from, was it a U of M project? What's the propellent? Someone must know!

UM Engineering.... Next stop is the flux capacitor.

That was amazing. It was really loud when he flew over to the student section.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:42 AM ^
I was afraid he was going to crash into the student section. He made a nice mid-air adjustment there.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:50 AM ^
Are there any safety features for that thing? What if the engine suddenly gave out, it's not like an airplane where you can glide around with no power.
October 30th, 2011 at 10:46 PM ^
It's the landing.

And the fuel is hydrogen peroxide. From <a href=http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-football/fresh-faced-freshmen-michiga…

The game ball for the Michigan-Purdue game was delivered in a futuristic manner on Saturday: via rocket pack.
Powered by a hydrogen peroxide jet pack strapped to his back, pilot Eric Scott flew from atop of southeast end of the Michigan Stadium to above the uprights in the north end zone before circling back around and delivering the ball at midfield.
The scene seemed straight out of "The Jetsons" or "The Rocketeer," and Michigan fans received Scott with a rousing ovation.
Scott is in the Guinness Book of World Records for speed in a rocket pack (68 mph) and distance traveled (1,500 feet) in a single flight.

Michigan jetpacks!!! No one can compete!!
October 30th, 2011 at 10:43 AM ^
If 1500 ft is a record, these things must hold only seconds of fuel. He probably exhausted his entire supply during the flyover.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:11 AM ^
and you are correct, these things do just hold seconds worth of fuel.
October 30th, 2011 at 12:40 PM ^
Telecast said 30 seconds worth.
October 30th, 2011 at 3:51 PM ^
Wow. Looking at the vids posted on this thread, it was 26 seconds from ignition to cutoff. That doesn't leave much margin for error!

if only it ran on dilithium, imagine the possibilities...easy. Imagine Denard
October 30th, 2011 at 1:56 AM ^
That was probably the coolest thing I've seen in my life.
I must have one!!!!!
October 30th, 2011 at 2:08 AM ^
Here is an article I found about it. It also has a link to a video showing him jet pack across a 1500 ft gorge
October 30th, 2011 at 9:31 AM ^
OP may want to correct the heading... This was a rocket-pack.. not a jet-pack (as explained in that article). Either way, Super-COOL!

Thank you Professor John Frink.

Now the other teams have to deal with the jetpack and with Denard. Good luck with that.

I was late to the game and missed it, I'm reallu bummed.
October 30th, 2011 at 7:45 AM ^
you weren't alone.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:21 AM ^
Yeah, wasn't it big of ESPN to give a camera shot of empty seats in the endzone when they mentioned the sold out stadium?
October 30th, 2011 at 2:53 AM ^
Here is an end zone look at it... embedding is kind a fuked up here so here is a direct link

I was watching this, drunkenly, and thinking, 'am I really seeing this shit'?
October 30th, 2011 at 5:17 AM ^
That's how I felt! I assumed that I had somehow fallen asleep and was having an awesome dream!

More proof that we're a great school and a great team. Advanced technology....we haz it.

Very explosive stuff.
October 30th, 2011 at 11:05 AM ^
Denard or the hydrogen?
October 30th, 2011 at 11:53 AM ^
both but i think denard is more explosive when healthy

I was there and it was pretty cool. It took me a couple seconds to find him at first. I kept looking on the field for him and didn't know he was taking off from the boxes.
Really loud when he flew above us but I was too impressed to care about my ears.

I thought it was Jonny Quest at first, but when I didn't see Hadji or Bandit, I knew I must have been wrong.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:20 AM ^
that the jetpacks havent changed all that much since the 60s (remember Lost In Space®)
I also remember the jet pack intro to the 84 Olympics and always wished I was there to experience it. Yesterday I finally got a chance to!
Very cool.
October 30th, 2011 at 9:26 AM ^
I was in the Alumni Band down near the south endzone. Extremely LOUD, and the Purdue players were pretty blown away by it, too.

I honestly though jetpacks were fictional. I was thoroughly confused and amazed when it took off and flew around.

How do we have a "space-themed" homecoming and not invite the emperor? That's just inviting destruction.

How has this thread been open for 10 hours with over 30 posts, and nobody has yet said:

I was watching on TV and when ESPN showed the last few seconds of the rockerman, the TV was paused and we all got a histoty lesson on the jet pack. Apparently my Grandfather when he was living back in Michigan was part of the original design of the first jet packs. He was a tool and die maker and build all of the molds that eventually went into casting the parts for the jet packs. He also worked on building the moldings for the Apollo missions.
It was definitely worth the 10 minutes delay to hear some cool piece of family history.

That was about the coolest thing ever! I was at the game with my 14 year old son and he couldn't stop talking about it. My thought was, I hope the thing doesn't crash into the stands. Video on the scoreboard from the helmet cam was pretty sweet.

Eric stopped by our post game tailgate. He is a different breed. He was still wearing his suit.
