SIAP: Jake Ryan now listed as starter

Submitted by heckdchi on

Despite starting every game this year, this is the first week that Jake Ryan is listed as the starter on the depth chart over Cam Gordon.

EDIT:

Ryan has been the starter at his position all year. He didn't technically start two games because Michigan started those games in their nickel package.

DOUBLE EDIT:

Somebody care to explain the epic arrogance and d'baggery that appears regularly on this board.  Should I be apologizing for trying to start an accurate discussion of something that is on topic and of interest to me regarding The Team?  If so, then sorry for wasting your valuable time.  If not, bite me already.

Beyer up and suggesting he'll start seeing more snaps at SAM it seems like maybe we just won't see Cam this year.

I really would like to see Cam play some this year. Any word on why he hasnt played? I thought he has been healthy the past few weeks. Im not saying he should start, but if he is healthy enough to play special teams, Im sure he can get some reps at lb. We coud use his athleticism on the outside.

I really like Jake Ryan and think that he's going to be a damn good player for us in the coming years, but I'm looking forward to a time when low-rated freshmen with MAC offer sheets are a little less likely to step right into our defensive starting lineup (without a major injury crisis or something).

Well, that's not fair. Ryan was injured his entire junior season and so didn't get scouted much at all, hence the offer list. However, his senior season he played next to a linebacker committed to OSU and outplayed him. OSU noticed but didn't need more LBs at that point. We noticed too, offered, and he committed. He came in with a lot more promise than your typical 3-star.

Also, he's a redshirt freshman, so he didn't "step right into" our defensive line up, he practiced at LB for a full season first.

Fair enough.  My point really wasn't about Ryan, specifically, but about freshmen/RS freshmen more generally.  If Sammy Watkins or Jadeveon Clowney beast their way into your starting lineup, that's one thing.  With guys like Ryan - who, again, I think will be excellent - I'd rather see them start in their junior and senior years after backing up similarly excellent juniors and seniors for a couple of years before then.

The guy is still really raw.

That's what I was thinking. Probably too late to do it this year, but spring and fall practice should be enough time for him to make the transition. With Fitzgerald moving on,  Morgan may move to MLB to back up Demens. That would leave us with Hawthorne, who has struggled, and Jones, who has hardly played, at WLB.

I think Morgan to MIKE is a no brainer. I get why they have him at WILL this year since he needs a little more beef before he can play MIKE and we didn't have a clear guy at WILL and you get your best guys out there. But I don't want a true frosh backing up Demens next year, and Morgan could be the heir apparent at that spot since Demens will be a senior. A good LB depth chart next fall would look like:

SAM: Ryan - Beyer - Bolden

MIKE: Demens - Morgan - RJS/Ringer

WILL: Cam/Hawthorne - Poole - Ross

That is a depth chart that looks good for the present and future.

It will be nice to see Beyer and Ryan add a little muscle.

Back injuries suck and Cam just never got healthy enough to contribute this year. Hopefully he comes back 100%

As great at the incoming freshmen LB's seem to be, it sure would be nice to redshirt most of them.
