OT: Red Wings jersey?

Submitted by LandryHD on

I'm buying a new Red Wings jersey sometime this week. My question to you guys is whose jersey should I buy? I want someone that will be around for awhile or should I just get a former great jersey? Thanks for the help!!

Although I still find myself bound by my father's admonition that "A man never wears another man's name on his back", IF you're going to do it (you could always get the jersey with a number  you like and no name), I'd say go with a classic/retired player since you'll never have to worry about the player being traded and you'll get a longer life out of the jersey: Howe, Yzerman, Chelios and I'd break that retired player rule only for Nick Lidstrom since he'll clearly never play for anyone else.

Well if you buy a jersey, it should be someone you think is teh best. I have a Lidstrom jersey and got it way back when he won the Conn Smythe. Pavel Datsyuk is signed for about 20 more years (maybe slightly less) and he's been a dominant player so that's always a good option. If you are a puck bunny then Darren Helm is the obvious choice.

19, 5, and 9 are great choices, but why not consider 32 Stu Grimson, 26 Joey Kocur, 25 McCarty, or 24 Bob Probert.  Those could earn you mad street cred. If you want to earn props with the 60 and over crowd, go with 1 Terry Sawchuck. Another completely underrated jersey is 16 Konstantinov...had he stayed healthy, he would have undoubtedly been one of the greatest defensemen to ever wear the winged wheel.  As for guys on the current team, expect 13 and 40 to be around a very long time. Go wings.

I been leaning on Datsyuk. This will be my first Wings jersey, kind of excited. I have plenty of shirts and figured I would go the jersey direction this time!

Kronwall would be a good jersey to get...for obvious reasons.

I've always liked the look of "Zetterberg" and "40" on the back.

Helm or Abby cause they're grinders.

If I had to pick I would probably go with Kronwall or Helm.

but i feel like howard has to be suggested.

Along with him you couldnt go wrong with a couple old guys not already mentioned such as draper or osgood.

You cannot go wrong with a Gordie (just make sure you get the "A" instead of the "C" for original Production Line era verisimilitude) or go with my preference, my beloved Ted Lindsay #7 jersey.  (I also have an Yzerman and a Howe, but I love my Terrible Ted jersey.)

I have one of each of the Russian 5, but i definitely wear my Konstantinov jersey the most.  Vlad the Impaler will live on forever in my heart as one of the most dominant men to ever wear the colors

A hundred thousand years ago when I was a kid Slava Fetisov was playing for the Devils and he needed a small medical procedure that my dad did for him. He gave my dad one of his game worns and I still have it. First man to start the wave of Russians in the NHL. Love that jersey but most people don't know who that is.

I bought a #25 Ogrodnick jersey about 10 years ago, and there's not a game that I wear it to where someone doesn't stop me to tell me how cool that is.  I like the old school stuff.  I'm the guy that has a Tom Veryzer Tigers jersey, as well :-)

So glad someone mentioned Larionov. One of my favorite players ever, he just seemed to be someone who came in night after night and quietly did his job skillfully. Loved that guy, and regret to this day that I didn't buy a Wings jersey with his name on it when they could be easily gotten at the Joe.

Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen are both locked down for many, many years. Kronwall will probably get a huge contract soon as well.

I'm thinking of getting Datsyuk since in my opinion, he's the best overall player in the NHL.

Played for Detroit for 11 years, then coached Detroit for 11 years. Won 3 Cups as a player, averaged nearly a point a game career for Detroit, won the Hart Trophy, coached the team to 4 Stanley Cup Finals.

Everytime I hear Delvecchio I think back to a red wings alum game I attended as a 9 year old at Vet's Arena in Ann Arbor... I waited patiently outside the lockerroom for autographs... at one point, the door swung open and in full view was Delvecchio and a few 60+ year old former wings struting around balls a draggin'.  It was like a pre-internet lemonparty.
