BCS Standings Question

Submitted by michiganfan39 on

I still can not believe what happened last night.  I am thinking the one good thing that came out of that is it made us look better  losing to a good MSU team.  I am thinking that this will play to our advantage in the BCS right?  Of course, Michigan is going to need to win out and Sparty is going to have to lose 2 games for the BCS standings and all that other stuff to come into play

The BCS standings don't mean much except if you're #1 or #2 so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Style points won't mean anything to us this year. Prior to the season If you told me we'd go 9-3 this year I would have been very happy. It looks like its a real possibility.

I think the BCS standing do mean something if you're not #1 or #2.  The non-automatic qualifiers have to have a certain standing in the BCS to get BCS bowl bids.  Not that is irrelevant this year, but ND gets an automatic BCS bowl bid if they are above a certain BCS ranking.

...that our BCS standings would rely solely on this, or even largely on this (perhaps not at all? The BCS system sucks anyway). In any event, a 3-2 performance alone from here onwards would mean that MSU's fortunes may very well be changing in the near future. I don't think it will be too long before we have the edge again.

I think Hoke has changed the tide on the rivalry. Hell people in Ohio are starting to believe him. Never in a million years I would have thought that. Selling Michigan jerseys is a good start.

One game at a time.  We have some really tough games ahead (even Purdue looked like a respectable team yesterday) and our weaknesses were exposed by MSU, so let's not get caught up in the BCS just yet.  We are now into the meat of our season, and being 6-1 is irrelevant right now

If both Michigan State and we win out (including MSU in the Big Ten championship), then we are in the BCS. Trading a BCS-eligible Wisconsin for a BCS-eligible MSU works in our favor because of strength of schedule. We played the latter and would miss the former in this scenario. Rooting for Wisconsin before came down to making it more likely that we would win our division, but now it helps us to have MSU win it by giving us some protection against potential blemishes.

Basically, if we win out to end the season with one loss, then we will be in the BCS. I like our chances of winning out.

I get what you're saying, but if M wins out, the Big Ten Champion and M would likely (certainly?) be the only teams in the Big Ten with only 1 loss.  M would have beaten Neb, Iowa, OSU, Illinois and ND and only lost on the road to MSU.  Wouldn't that likely put us fairly high in the BCS even if MSU does not end up running the table?

This also creates some interesting possible scenarios.  Suppose MSU and Wisky (or PSU) close out the Big Ten regular season without dropping another.  If Wisky/PSU wins the championship game, do we get a BCS spot over MSU who beat us and made it to the championship game in our division over us, but has two loses ND and Wisky (round 2)?   If MSU wins the championship game, do we get a BCS spot over Wisky who made it to the championship game and only would have lost to MSU this year (twice) or over PSU who made it to the championship game and only would have lost to MSU and 'Bama?  Of course, lots of season left and not very likely those teams (M, MSU and winner of Wisky-PSU) finish without another blemish.

The BCS is so "what have you done for me lately?" that I think we would go over a two-loss MSU team, even though they beat us, just because they would be coming off of a loss. On that note, I agree with you about our going to the BCS even if MSU loses. I kind of realized that as I was writing my post. Having MSU win the conference gives us better cover for our loss to them, though, which is ammunition for our BCS case that we wouldn't have otherwise.

I think a 1-loss Michigan team is in the BCS. Money talks in the BCS, and there's no headlines like the "Michigan is back under 1st Year Coach Hoke". Hell the Michigan name got our 7-5 team a New Years Day bowl last year, I think it could wrangle a BCS bowl with only 1 loss.

That being said, I kinda hope we don't make it. Unless we got lucky enough to play the Trash that comes out of the Big East our chances against the other BCS teams isn't that good.

Howeva, seeing us make a BCS bowl without winning the division or beating MSU might cause EL to explode. That could be fun to watch

BCS Standings don't tell the intangibles and how you won. They don't take a lot into account actually. A good standing this year will help with:

- getting into a good bowl game
- getting paid
- revitalizing recruiting (the recruits watch BCS games), and Hoke / Mattison / Borges like to use this on the trail.
- plain old swagger, something we all miss. Our team is filled with too many good kid with lack of attitude.
- confidence for Bama in 2012. It snot like we are opening up on a team from Ypsilanti. Sabans going to bring it and Denard needs a big bowl game experience that is positive before that game, Mississippi state, not that good.
- a new place for me to travel

Now don't get me wrong, a B1G championship, beating MSU (that one really burned) and OSU are priorities for next year. Hell going undefeated and havinge a lights out defense that makes SEC teams piss their pants and winning a national title are end goals.

But I'll take any jump we get from MSU right now. We need to root for all the teams we play this year still or have played. We need all the help we can get. BCS standings now, going undefeated rest of the way, and wiining back own own state. I couldn't help but think last night how MSU looked like us. A great defense and it just made me realize that getting back to our former selves will take minimum two more years. I'll take whatever I can right now. Hail. Go Blue!e

We're not in a position yet to talk about BCS bowl games, really.  I'd like to beat Purdue and Iowa and show we can win more games than last year before even thinking about crap like that.
