This is definitely a well-deserved honor. I hope Molk continues to improve and sets himself up nicely on draft day after winning a B1G championship. These seniors deserve more awards to hang their hats on.

Congratulations to Molk, the man has earned it as much for his having to deal with off the field nonsense as his on the field performance. Having said that I think SI's tagline of allowing michigan to run for  239 yards per game might be slightly misattributed. Dilithium will do what it does, heh.

I dont think this has been Molk's strongest season, but he's in a new offense so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. AA teams don't really mean much to me, but it's always good for show and recruiting.

The B1G has five of nine first-team lineman, but no skill position guys or LB/DBs on either team. I feel like A.J. Jenkins, Montee Ball, and Lavonte David were at least worthy of second team looks.

Molk being small has been mentioned here before, and he's really not as undersized as some think he is:

  • David Molk - 6'2, 288 lb
  • Erik Wood, C, Buffalo Bills - 6'4, 311 lb
  • Ryan Cook, C, Miami Dolphins - 6'6, 328 lb (High)
  • Dan Koppen, C, New England Patriots - 6'2, 296 lb
  • Nick Mangold, C, New York Jets - 6'4, 307 lb
  • J.D. Walton, C, Denver Broncos - 6'3, 305 lb
  • Casey Wiegman, C, Kansas City Chiefs (16 years exp) - 6'2, 285 lb (Low)
  • Samson Satele, C, Oakland Raiders - 6'3, 300 lb
  • Nick Hardwick, C, San Diego Chargers - 6'4, 305 lb
  • Matt Birk, C, Baltimore Ravens - 6'4, 310 lb
  • Kyle Cook/Matt McGlynn, C, Cincinnati Bengals - 6'3.5, 315.5 lb
  • Steve Vallos, C, Cleveland Browns - 6'3, 310 lb
  • Maurkice Pouncey, C, Pittsburgh Steelers - 6'4, 304 lb
  • Chris Myers, C, Houston Texans - 6'4, 289 lb
  • Jeff Saturday, C, Indianapolis Colts - 6'2, 295 lb
  • Brad Meester, C, Jacksonville Jaguars - 6'3, 302 lb
  • Eugene Amano, C, Tennessee Titans - 6'3, 300 lb

This is just the (presumable, I didn't look at depth charts, just years of exp.) starting centers for AFC teams. Feel free to check out the NFC starters if you like. Averages:

  • Height - 6'3.5
  • Weight - 304

Even though it wouldn't be reasonable to expect Molk to grow another inch and a half anytime soon, I think it is certainly within reason to think he could put on another 10-15 pounds. The concern you raise about him having had past leg injuries is valid, but I see no reason why he couldn't have a successful NFL career, as a center, just based on his size.

Almost every review I've read has concerns about size and strength. Some guys in the NFL can get away with it. If he gets in the right system, I think he could be successful. He'll get drafted for sure, but we'll see if he sticks in the NFL.

I think you could sub him in for Jordan White and have no problem, but all the other receivers have better #s than he does so far. Plus, Blackmon isn't nearly on the torried pace he set last year. But White is missing 12 catches for 119 yards because the Michigan game doesn't count. So he's had a pretty good season too.

And, since his overall demeanor is at least as good as his play, hats off to his parents and the other people who have influenced his character. It isn't an accident.
