All the worst MSU fouls, chronologically

Submitted by 2plankr on

On this first play, three minutes into the first quarter, Gholston arm bars Lewan, taking him out of the game:

You can also see it with Lewan's reaction here: http://www.youtube.com/user/detdik313#p/u/5/AL4iM4vNKF0

Next, midway through the second, is the WorthyWhite roughing the passer:

Next, five minutes into the third, the Gholston face mask yank, and at the end of the third, the punch, both in this video:

Full replay of the facemask pull here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sM18sAZRnIU

Here is what Lewan did to "deserve" the punch:

Another view of the play here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GquHARFJSZc&feature=related

And finally the Rush RTP in the fourth that took Denard out:

Good recap video here: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=10100922430009683

Neither of the roughing the passer calls would normally bother me but in the context of this game and everything else...Also it seems to me that on both of them, Denard doesnt seem to be expecting it at all(presumably because it's SO late and they went SO out of their way to throw him down)

The other thing I would say is HUGE props to Lewan, in every way.  Especially when you consider how big a part of a LT's job is to protect the QB.  For all the people who have said this team was soft, go look at that series of plays through his perspective.

I do too.  But keep in mind, two of them weren't called (the Lewan injury and the Denard facemask - remember the refs called that for the late hit, i dont think they saw the facemask)

They were better than us this year.  Flat out better than us.  Period.  End of story.

But I think we will be better than them next year, and I think we'll be a lot better in two years.  These kids won't forget what happened.  Remember, Sparty wouldnt have to resort to this stuff if they were capable of beating us 49-3 like we did to them.  But they aren't, and they never will be - this is the low point of this series.

I just worry Dantonio will retire/replace Fickell before he gets his comeuppance

Your annoyance with aggregating all the parts of the game that people are talking about into one convenient post containing the relevant video in condensed form is noted.

That said, its not about cheating.  Its about dirty play.  If it was really just about cheating, then I wouldnt have cared about it if we had won, which is not the case.

Yes, Denard said that in the postgame press conerence.  He was also practically apoplectic after the facemask pull, lobbying for the call.

Do you think Denard was acting butthurt?

Your toughness is incredible.  Truly an inspiration to message board posters everywhere.

  1. The events as recorded on video set forth a very good basis for the Conference to suspend Gholston and Rush.
  2. One never knows what the Conference is doing behind closed doors, but public outcries have clearly been known to influence decisions on things like suspensions.
  3. Suspending Gholston and Rush -- two of the Spartans who could put the most pressure on Wisconsin's most important player, Russell Wilson -- could hurt the Spartans very badly this week.
  4. A bad loss by MSU to Wisconsin is a good thing for Michigan.
  5. Calling public attention to a very ugly side of MSU football under Mark Dantonio and Pat Narduzzi is a good thing for Michigan.
  6. Your concerns about Michigan appearing to be "butt hurt" are preposterous.  MSU and everyone associated with the program; they hate us.  OSU hates us.  The whole conference hates us.  What are you worried about?

I care that athletes from a major NCAA program were specifically TRYING to cause injuries during a football game.  If I saw a Michigan player punching an opponent after a play, or throwing a quarterback down *several seconds* after the pass was thrown, or trying to take out his assignment with an arm bar, I would be calling for his suspension, no question. If I saw all three of those in the same game, with no consequences *at all* afterward, I would be calling for a coaching change.

It has nothing to do with whether those cheap shots influenced the outcome of the game.  Football is already one of the most dangerous sports of the modern age, and there should be no tolerance whatsoever for actively attempting to harm other players.

It's thuggish behavior and it shouldn't be tolerated - and in most schools it isn't.  Jonathan Brown's nut shot against Patrick Ward was met with a one-game suspension, imposed by the coach, just two weeks ago.  A knee to the groin is painful, but has little risk of permanent damage or long-term affects to a person's career.  Do you really think that Brown's behavior was worth a suspension but these clips aren't?

Question, because I don't feel like starting a thread about it, and the only people awake are probably here.

Who is replacing Cousins? It will be a downgrade, because when isn't it when you lose a fifth year senior. Plus, Cousins was damn good. But, who is in line to take over?

Andrew Maxwell. He will be a Junior next year. He plays with the second unit and at times with the first. He looks pretty good. More mobile than cousins and a better arm. Obviously there will be a drop-off with the intangibles and experience but his skillset is better and his potential is much better.

Someone needs to do an analysis on William Gholston because he may be the perfect embodiment of MSU's inferiority complex.

Also, despite the fact it was the play that knocked out Denard, I love that Vincent Smith handled Gholston quite handily while picking up the blitz.

Forgive me, for the coffee is still brewing, didn't catch that part. Comprehension before coffee is a crapshoot.

*checks pot,  now ready, pours cup*

In any event, on principle, we should care about all of them, for all of them are evidence of a classless team coached by a classless Dantonio, who completely embodies the mentality of his fanbase. It provides an even clearer picture of what we are not.

However, it is now Monday morning and seeing rehashes of this has become a little tiresome. Just like I'd rather shave with a cleaver than watch the game again, so I feel about specific penalties within the game.

Are we going to go through two weeks of this? It's getting as bad as the Rich Rod stuff from last year. They won. These penalties aren't why they won. Michigan should have done a better job of making them pay for these, but didn't. Let's move on.

Roughing the passer penalties happen.  Sometimes it's hard to control yourself running at full speed in the game.  I'm fine with the first one.  The second one the guy could have stopped himself.  The twisting of the head, the arm bar, the punch.  Uncalled for.  When Gholston gets suspended for a game or two, I hope the opposing offense runs to that side every damn down to take advantage.

This is the best thread on the subject, and it needs to be the last. There's been enough hand wringing over this, it's time to move on. It's good to have it all laid out in video instead of just bitching about it again. +1 for that.

Now let's get ready for Purdue.

by state, what a shocker, but nothing about this game pissed me off more than the 4th and inches call.  Touissant has the first, and we're 1st & goal at the seven or so.  The TD after that ties the game and gives us the momentum.  Instead we handed the game to Sparty.

Yes we got outplayed, and yet we were still there to take it.

Get the fuck over it. We lost. MSU has a team of felons and dirty players. Bitching about it isn't going to change the course of the game and it's going to make you sound petty. They were the better team, no ifs, ands, or buts about it. We lost. Get the fuck over it. Move on.

Salty much? I don't believe there are too many people that say if MSU would have played a clean game we would have one. Those penalties, while cheap, kept some of our drives alive. The penalties were not while we lost. The outrage is over the thuggery displayed by the Spartans and I think most people would be satisfied if at the very least Gohlston were suspended.

Yes we lost. Yes we are upset about it. But I mean come on, there was clear intent to injure and not from good clean physical hits. It has nothing to do with the loss.

Everyone saw the game. Everyone knows that they played dirty. It doesn't mean we have to hold onto for all of eternity. If we lost a close game because they injured Denard on a dirty play, then there would be something to bitch about for a while. It was a 2 TD loss in a game where those penalties only benefited us. It does nothing to continue complaining about it except to give them something to laugh about. The same goes for all of the "Start Gardner" threads (He was 3/7, not better than Denard, and missed wide open receivers). Threads like this just make this place intollerable to come to because this is supposed to be a place for rational discussion, but instead it's mlive or rcmb after a loss and it causes me to lose faith that our fanbase is actually an better than any other fanbase.

Again I agree that we didn't lose because of the penalties. And the two roughing the passers were football plays. I am more speaking specifically of Gohlston. He was clearly out there with the intent to injure. At least two out of three of his plays were ejectable offences. Now had he been out I still don't think the game would have played any different. I would like to see the Big 10 suspend him for his next game so that he gets the message he can't get away with that crap or else he is going to seriously hurt somone.

For those of you that say toughen up this is football...alot of that was more akin to UFC than football. Personally I'd be pissed about some of those plays even if we had won. You see I am emotionally devoloped enough to take the loss as a loss and then also look at the actions of Gohlston and be appalled. His penalties were not why they won...so it is a seperate issue.

I'd be up for a discussion about that as well. However I can't create posts and thus have to read and react to the topics available to me. And as far as Saturday and Sunday...I chose to stay away because I was pissed about the game and didn't want to take part in schadenfrued

Football

Its not tennis

Stop crying, people. I look forward to a day where Michigan's defense plays with the same reckless abandonement and destroys a team like MSU did on Saturday. Thats my takeaway, at least

2plankr

October 17th, 2011 at 9:53 AM ^

If a Michigan player ever conducted themselves the way Gholston did Saturday, I would cease to be a fan.  I can't say for sure, but I would think that would extend to the coach and the team

As you say though, thats just my takeaway

98 is White, 99 is Worthy.  The second highlight in the original post is a late hit by #98 White.  It's hard to really tell the difference in those stupid uniforms, but I don't think WOrthy did anything in the game that would be considered dirty.

There is nothing worse than having to agree with Orobs, and that is what I find myself doing.  Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!

As always though, MGoBlog never fails to produce. Someone found a new word and shared it with all of us!

Can we just create a single thread where we cry about the refs / msu thuggery / Denard?  Maybe it could be called "I'm gonna hang-up and listen"

It would have been nice to take all of these personal foul penalties and won that damn game...It didn't do anything except continue our drives (as long as Taylor's arm is okay and Denard's back is okay)....

I didn't realize the 1st play was on Gholston too - when I saw the replay during the game after Taylor when out, I was pissed at the dirty play...didn't know he'd get caught with 2 more.  That helmet twist on Denard was just play bull$hit.  Hitting him late, then twisting like that and laying there like "what I didn't do anything"...what a punk.

Again, would have been nice to win the game because of this..otherwise it just makes it worse that State gave us so many opportunities and we still couldn't do much.

or sunday.

I know, crazy!!! right?

it's true, though. Some people out there just do not run to the mgoblog msg board immediately after the game to discuss the game. Therefore, you might get some discussion from those monday morning types. I don't have a problem with it. I'm sure Brady Hoke, if he has a presser today, will talk some about the Michigan-MSU game. Are we going to shout at him from the crowd to get over it and stop talking about it? I doubt it.

Now tomorrow might be pushing it, but I have no problem with some discussion carrying over to monday morning knowing that some people have a life and don't necessarily spend all weekend on their computer or smartphone posting and reading on mgoblog.
