He is in car #77, which is the second or third car that goes airborn and flies up into air spinning upside down and flying into the fence, sliding on fire upside down. Terrible news for the racing community, thoughts go out to all involved

RIP to the guy. That's something you never want to see happen in any sport. My thoughts are going out to him

Single most brutal wreck I've ever seen in auto racing. Sad.

every year since 1976. Truly tragic. These drivers race on the edge and racing is safer now than at any time in the past, but it still a very risky sport.
RIP Dan Wheldon. Prayers and thoughts with Dan's family.

That show how mundane the things that seem terrible at times. It puts things like losing to state in perspective. showing that in the greater scheme of things they are inconsiquental.

<br>Rest in peace, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

He was only entered in 3 of the 17 races on the schedule this year, yet still won the Indy 500. Big loss to Indy Racing.

crash, one of the worst you'll ever see at such speed.
Made worse by the fact that the live broadcast was using the in-car cam of Wheldon just seconds before the accident. In a sense the viewer was able to watch the last moments of this man's life and what he saw just before it happened.

Yea that is crazy to think about. you saw what he saw in his last seconds alive. Roger Penske just looked like he was such a state of shock. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends

I've never seen anything like that. I'm from Indianapolis, so Indy car racing figures are always really big around here, and you really feel like you get to know the racers over the years. This is just so sad. RIP Dan, you will be greatly missed.

This just put a terrible end to the worst weekend in sports I've ever experienced. I've watched every Indy Car race since I was a little kid when my father took me to the 97' Indy 500. Losing Dan almost feels like losing a family member.

Absolutely horrible. Didn't he win the Indy 500 this year? RIP.

Just a momumental lose for the sport. Wheldon was always a great guy and one of the universally liked drivers. Far too young to go and still at his peak in driving skill.
Very appropriate action taken by the series and drivers after this tragedy. Really puts this weekend into perspective.

Wheldon was one of the top all-time IndyCar winners and one of my favorite drivers. Prayers for his soul and his wife, Susie and their baby boys.

It's been a shitty summer here in the Tampa Bay area. First Lee Roy Selmon, now Dan Wheldon. Wheldon was a community fixture down here; he did a lot of charity work, and had a reputation as "one of the good guys." RIP.

As bad as this weekend has been sports-wise, I think this is the worst. God bless.
