Hate Week: Personal Interactions With Sparty

Submitted by CRex on

Any good Spartan interactions you want to share?  We're all cursed with having them as coworkers, neighbors, and sadly even family members.  So what do you have?

I'll go with a CSB:

I get back home from seeing Yuja Wang in the Hill Auditorium  (she's good, it's worth it) and find a Jeep Wrangler parked in my reserved spot.  A spot that has a cover on it, a numer and some signs in the lot saying "Covered Parking is Reserved".

As I exit my vehicle to check this out I notice the plate liner reading "Michigan State Alumni".  As I walk around the vehicle I find this Wrangler does not have its top on.  No, it's a brand new Jeep Wrangler that is wide open.  Heck even the cellphone charger is dangling out of the DC jack.  No one is around, wide open Jeep, brand new leather interior, Sparty plate.

All I can do is look up at the sky and go "Lord, why must you tempt me to commit felonies so?  Why?".

Because I'm not Spartan material I merely call the good people at Brewer's towing.  Within 20 minutes the Jeep is gone.

Well Sparty doesn't notice I had his car towed until Monday evening (it was towed Sunday at 7 pm).  I assume this is because he lacks any kind of job and the ability to realize that a bright yellow GTO is now parked where his Jeep was.

When he does notice he comes storming out of his apartment to swear at my wife as she is in the process of getting into the car.  Big dude, swarthy, clearly needs to shave more frequently and the like.  Comes out screaming at a small Asian girl.

At this point our pet malamute (imagine a husky that is supersized up to 110 pounds), who was previously very excited about his ride in the car, worms his way out of the back seat and jumps out the open the door.  I'm just leaving the apartment in time to see his guy freeze as our dog plants himself between my wife and the guy, lets our a very low growl and suddenly silence fills the parking lot.  Turns out he's not such a man when faced with muscle and fangs.

I get in the guy's face a bit for yelling at my wife like that.  We've lived at our current place for three years and know all the neighbors, so some of the other guys come out as well and get in the guy's face as well.  Sparty slinks back inside.

So in conculsion, why can't they stay on their side of the state where they belong.  Also I'm preparing myself for "Hmmmm someone keyed my car, I wonder who that could be....".

Up until the part where you retaliated with a very Sparty-like move. I'm sure it felt good when you did it, but it really makes you look just as douchey as your waiter, if not moreso. Had you complained to the manager, getting a free salad in teh process, and not left a tip for such douchiness by the waiter, it would be different...that's what I would have done.

Nevertheless, it is definitely a good story.

Congrats bro, you really showed him....and your wife.

"Big win here hunnay, lets go get us some of that fine-dinin applebees for dinner ::slams remnant natty light and throws out of trailer window::. Im gonna spend a whole $32 on you tonight, lucky lady"

Is this what you UM fans are?!? Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon.

If you want to act like a big shot, maybe save your $8 (lolz) and go someplace nicer than applebees (LOLZ)

Good reading here boys, entertaining as hell.

This stuff just makes me laugh.  It's amazing how 99.9% of internet fans have stories to tell about horrible treatment at the hands of [insert rival school's name].   Of course, there's never, ever any embellishment in these posts.

The classic scenario:

Fan of School 1: "Hey, it's going to be a good game this weekend."

Fan of School 2: "Yeah, I'm pretty excited.  How do you feel about the game?"

Fan of School 1: "I'm a little nervous, to be honest."

Fan of School 2: "Yeah, me too.  See you around"

[Hours later, on the internet]

Fan of school 1: "OMG!  You won't believe what a scumbag I ran into from School 2 today..."

My 3yr old's teacher is a Spartan.  When she found out my wife and I are proud UofM alumni she taught our son to say "Go Green, Go White".  When I relayed the story on Facebook I got a barrage of people encouraging me to have her fired.

While I refrained, I did send the kid into school the next day in head to toe Michigan gear and have since made him wear something with Michigan colors everyday.......that was 3 months ago.

I plan on sending him in with his jersey and full gear on Monday.

Joe Louis Arena, Michgan vs. Michigan State

Michigan is wearing yellow yerseys.

State Fan, loud as hell: "You guys looks like giant fucking bananas."

Me (a bit louder): "We might look like fucking bananas but you'll all be working for us in 5 years!"

The entire section in the upper deck erupted in laughter. Ah the memories...

GO BLUE!

Yeah, so typically my fiance is bearable, but today he literally whipped out the "I currently make more money than you" card.  Despite the fact that I took a career hit so we could be less geographically challenged.

Stay classy, Sparty.

I've told this story before but it works since it's Sparty week.  My dad and I went to see Eastern play Michigan State, it wasn't a particularly good game since Sparty was handing it to Eastern (as usual).  Every time the Spartans scored, there was this guy who had a cheer that sounded like Al Bundy.  It got annoying after a while.  The best part was in the middle of the third quarter when Al Bundy says, "Hey, their colors are green and white too".  Wow...it took you three quarters to realize that....

And actually...Eastern established their colors as green and white when it was formed in 1849, so I think it is the other way around, Michigan State's colors are Green and White too...:)

I live in the Bay Area.  I get the occasional "Go Blue!" shouted at me when I'm walking around with an M shirt on, but never got any Sparty hate here.  In fact, I never saw any Sparty fans when I lived in Pa either, but I had my hands full with OSU and PSU fans though.

I remember last year walking home after the loss. My best friend and I stopped by our friends place on the way home. Our friends there all transferred from MSU to Michigan and try to stay ambivalent towards the rivalry, although most of them favor Michigan. As such, many of their and our MSU friends came over for the tailgate and were quite excited about the win. I paused and felt incrediblely drained (LSAT was before the game). While I was talking to a couple of my friends, two MSU fans came over, a guy and a girl. They started giving us shit about the loss, and I just ignored it. It wasn't until the girl mentioned our QB sucked and that he was the reason we lost that I started paying attention. She said Cousins was so great and other bullshit. But then she asked why Denard was our QB. I was surprised at the question and didn't know what to say. I was astounded that she began hinting we lost because our QB was black. She said something else about our QB not being like theirs and not being smart, so I decided to come out and ask if she was alluding to their QB being white and our QB being black. She denied it. Trying to start up the conversation with my friends, I ignored her continued comments about MSU being better. She then began to recommence her comments about Denard as QB. She asked about why there are so many white QB's in the NFL and don't teams usually have white QB's. I curtly said that a QB can be black or white and that there are plenty of good ones of either skin color. She paused for a minute or two, but then began again with the comments. Finally she made a comment to the regard that we need to get a white QB and her friend finally had the good decency to pluck her away from the conversation before my friend and I blew our tops. Suffice to say, I stayed about another minute until the frustration that we lost to this team and this fan base pissed me off enough to leave.

I went to MSU for law school a couple of years ago, and while there didn't get too much UM-MSU crap except during rivalry week.  My wife, though, had food thrown at her while running (in a UM t-shirt, but still), guys shoot her with water guns as she walked by, and had to stand next to me as a bunch of drunk Spartan trolls yelled gay slurs toward us as we walked to dinner (now to be fair, I was wearing a UM sweatshirt).

Now, there are always going to be jerks out there, but by and large I found MSU kids to be reasonably civil outside of UM-MSU sport weeks.  They are not perfect by any means, and the number of them who say "oh yeah, I got into UM/UofC/ND/Northwester/name-your-big-midwest-schools but chose MSU" far outstrip statistical reality, but as the years have gone by I've realized that most of them are just buying into the notion of a rivalry that isn't reciprocated to a level they want or expect.  The UM game is the biggest week of the year for most Spartan fans; for UM, it's a big game but there are always bigger ones.  And no matter how many times MSU wins in this series, that will likely never change.  And as others have noted, you see UM fans around the globe; with MSU, they are more geographical provincial, typically occupying the area between Metro-Detroit and GR; they all come from the state, and so they stick around and their numbers swell as a result.  That, in turn, creates a feedback loop where their peers at work, clubs, gym, groups, religious institutions, etc. are also Spartan fans, and they feed into this excitement.

Throw in a couple of random wins and a recent run of success against poor-to-average UM teams, and you have a fanbase that is unable to cope with the fact that regardless of what they do, their big rival still doesn't take them seriously.  That drives them crazy, just like it drives UM fans crazy the past decade or so as OSU basically dominated the series and started talking about how beating PSU or a BCS bowl win were bigger games than the UM series (though to a lesser degree, but still).  It is the lack of acknowledgment, not so much condescension but indifference, that drives Spartan fans crazy, and is probably why we see some of this jerkish behavior described above.

get food thrown at her and squirted with a water gun the day of the game?? That's incredibly dumb and douchey to do, but even more so if it was done during the week leading up to the game.

You were very fair to MSU in your post, but I disagree with you on about what drives us crazy about UofM. What drives us crazy is how (many of) you swear you don't care about us as a rival or don't take us seriously but then when this week comes around (many of) you are all about "PUTTING LIL BRO BACK IN THEIR PLACE, RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE."

Besides that I guess the only reason we have to not like you is because your school is the other big school in the state of Michigan, and  we like beating you and historically you have been better than us. Whodathunkit???????????

If you're wondering why the Spartan fans you encountered were idiots or so offensive towards you... it's because they're just dicks in general. You have dicks in Ann Arbor don't you?

(OP: Didn't mean to come at your directly, just my thoughts on the rivalry in general)

Football is not MSU's only sport. We can live just fine with international basketball recognition and a strong history of domination in hockey. No need to search for your approval that we are a quality football program. I'm happy that your arrogance has lead you to believe we need it though. I hope you continue those constant pats on your own back, and then maybe someday realize that MSU sees Wisconsin, OSU, Notredame, and Penn State as just as big or bigger games as UofM. Especially with your great winning record over the past 5 or so years. Trust me you are not our benchmark.

With what is a quality education from UofM you have managed to sound very uneducated as you would have the Spartan in your story seem. You failed to check your spelling, you group all MSU grads together and then (like a good bigot) objectify them all as uneducated jerks, and then you bring back some Jim Crow laws with your seperate but equal reference. I enjoy a good friendly rivalry, but I chose to keep it to sports and not personally attacking people. Grow up brother.

And unwritten rule of the Internet #5632 is don't attack spelling or grammar unless you're good at it...or you at least checked it in the post you're using to throw down the gauntlet.

.......99.99% fabrication of course, but hilarious none-the-less.  I think the salad slamming while fine dining at Applebees was my favorite, lol.
