Kickoff to "Hate Week", Day One.

Submitted by GunnersApe on

Since those bastards in EL have had and extra week to stock up on couches and gas mask, let’s reflect on why we hate on Hate Week.

#1 Spartan Bob

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Michigan_vs._Michigan_State_football_game

The 2001 Michigan State vs. Michigan football game, also known as "The Catch", "Clockgate", or the "Clock Game", was played on November 3, 2001 at Spartan Stadium.[1]

While the game was closely-played throughout, it is the game's conclusion that is most remembered. On fourth-and-goal, with one second remaining in the fourth quarter, Michigan State quarterback Jeff Smoker threw a touchdown pass to running back T. J. Duckett as time expired to win 26-24.[2] The clock had run out of time before the last play of the game took place, but with one second showing on the clock, the Spartans were allowed to have one last play.[3] Regardless, following the game the Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr chose to file a petition to change the way the game time was kept and the NCAA now keeps official time on the field.[4]

#2 1974 Rose Bowl.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_Ohio_State_vs._Michigan_football_game

On the day after the game, following a conference call, it was announced that Ohio State would play in the Rose Bowl instead of Michigan. Schembechler was furious at the call, referring to it as "an embarrassment to the Big Ten Conference" and claiming "petty jealousies" were involved.[2] Schembechler went on to demand changes to the Big Ten's policies regarding post-season play. Schembechler was particularly bitter because his 1973 team did not lose a game and was not rewarded with a bowl assignment, and remained angry at the vote until his death in 2006. Schembechler also claimed the Franklin injury was just an excuse, since Ohio State's strength was a running game and not a passing attack.[3]

It was rumored that Michigan State University voted for Ohio State in retaliation for Michigan's "no" vote in 1949 against admitting Michigan State to the Big Ten. This charge was never substantiated. For months afterward, Ohio State newspapers would be flooded with letters from angry Wolverine fans, and threats of lawsuits.

Deep thought of the day by Silkey Johnston, " I hate you. I hate you. I don't even know you, and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and nobody else but you."

But they have a link about Spartan bob. He messed up the clock thing and that sucked, but he has lead a pretty good life. His mom tried to orphan him, his dad was dead, he did 2 tours in Vietnam, came home found out his dad was alive in Germany and wanted nothing to donwith him, went to MSU on gi loans worked at MSU for 40 some years, got dissed by beckmann and every um fan, found out he had a sister and moved to mass to have a family life for the first time ever. Too bad um lost that game but he is what college sports are about.

It seems like we have had a problem with Denard being too amped up at the beginning of games, needing his teammates to calm him down. Here's hoping he chillaxes, comes out throwing strikes, and we humiliate Michigan JV in their house. 42-14 sounds good.

Last year my wife and I came seperately to the game, and she related to me that she'd been shoved ocross the street by random spartan trash for no apparent reason.  If you knew my wife...she is the kindest person, and probably would cross the street on her own accord if she thought it could offend...

The horde of ticketless inbred paint-huffing trash that descended onto Ann Arbor last year was unpecedented in its scope and disease.  You want to defend the university by saying that these aren't really students, but the university takes pride in the fact that yes, indeed they are.

While I'd argue that a humane euthanasia would be the best and most appropriate course of action for that entire campus, I'm willing to settle for a good solid swat on the nose, preferably delivered by Mike Martin.  I want Cousins to wake up on Sunday feeling like he went to bed with Keith Appling.

I think this MSU game is way more important to the students than OSU.  We don't really know many people that go to OSU, and aside from people telling us that this rivalry was important throughout history, there is no other reason to think highly of this rivalry aside from historic documentaries....since lets face it.... the last 7 years have been pretty lopsided.

On the other hand, anyone growing up in Michigan has a ton of friends that went to MSU.  I have a hard time believing there is one non-ag student at MSU who wouldnt have given his left nut to come to UM, but had to settle for MSU.  Now, whenever we see them back home, they have to convince us that getting rejected by Michigan was the greatest thing that ever happened to them and that MSU does not suck as hard as everyone in ann arbor thinks.  It's one of the greatest inferiority complexes in the world.

Since they don't have many comparables to substantiate their claims (aside from some random ass program that nobody cares about....kind of like Wes Mantooth in Anchor Man saying that the ratings are flawed), they become the most obnoxious breed of human being when they win this game.  It's awful and it's difficult to ignore.  Social media has just made this so so much worse.

Therefore, as a student, this MSU game is more important to me...not because it gives me the sheer joy that beating OSU on a national stage would, but because it prevents a massive annoyance.  It's pretty sad to think that way, but MSU trash is just that petty and annoying.

I will say though, a close second on the annoyance factor is the UM student who shouts "we're still better at academics" after losing a FOOTBALL game.  Please please please dont do this...it's pretty embarrassing.  We know it, they know it (deep down), and it just makes us come across as arrogant.

But it's sad. Having run on the field after our '97 win over tSIO, having had to listen to David Boston's BS for a week about Woodsen being overrated... there is no greater feeling than beating Ohio.

2006 should've given you guys a better feel for the rivalry as it was one of the greatest matchups of all time. Here's to hoping that you start viewing the MSU game as just another beatdown on our way to play Ohio.

I just got a chance to watch a recording of the Northwestern game with sound(we wont talk about the music-blasting shitty sports bar I watched the game at in Chicago) and I was extra amused by Fitzgerald's smug halftime assertion that they had all the answers to Michigan's blitzes, and "This is what we do".

Having already had the pleasure of watching the second half, I'm wondering if he would like to take those comments back...

This guy is an ass-clown. He hated us as an OSU assistant and has carried this chip to his tenure at MSU. I can't wait to see Mattison send Kovacs to bury Cousins like GERG shoving a stuffed beaver into someone's muzzle.

Is this hate week? Maybe. Probably better seen as "beat-down your little brother so he shuts up" week. Go Blue.

It's not that MSU has been so great these past 3 years, it's been Michigan has been that bad. It was so frustrating to watch Michigan get beat by really an average MSU team. Just look how MSU got dismantled by Alabama in their bowl game. Now that Michigan is on the road to recovery, MSU will be put back where they belong, order will be restored to the universe. No more easy chunks of yardage by Kirk Cousins. One thing that has been a constant, you put pressure on Cousins, and he is done.

I live in Western Michigan, so I'm surrounded by Sparties, will be good to quiet them down a bit.

I hate MSU blithely dismissing our 6-0 record, pointing to our "cakewalk" schedule; all while wearing their 2010 Big 10 Champions t-shirt which they were only able to achieve due to a cakewalk schedule and having the irony of their comments being completely lost on them.

I hate the fact that losing to them 3 straight years for the first time since Lyndon Johnson was president suddenly warrants them to be elevated to the status of a countdown clock in the U of M lockerroom; an honor to which they are wholly unworthy.

I hate that for 3 years under Rodriguez they embraced the meme of Michigan ignoring in-state talent in our recruiting and then dismissing the importance of this when Hoke, in his first six months, runs the table on Dantonio in Michigan.

I hate having to run the gaunlet of boorish juggalos and brahs after last years game in Ann Arbor and then Sparty having the temerity to talk about classiness when Darius Morris tells Kalin Lucas to "Get the fuck off my court".

I hate that the past 3 years has produced enough frustration in me as an alum and a fan that this rant actually makes me feel better.  I have no doubt that Hoke will restore balance to the Force.  I have no doubt that Dantonio will end his coaching career at MSU with a losing record to Michigan.  I have no doubt that Brady Hoke will win a Big 10 championship game before Mark Dantonio.  Yet, I hate that the path to this may not start this year.  I'm impatient.  I'm tired of waiting.  Let's get on with it already.  Go Blue!
