Are Visits Allowed at Away Games?

Submitted by BostonWolverine on

I'll use last night's game as an example for this question. Anthony Standifer is from the Crete-Monee area, which is a little more than an hour from Evanston. What are the rules about whether or not he'd be able to attend a Michigan away game?

I don't think we can invite players to other places. Maurice Clarett used an official visit to Michigan to stand on Ohio states sideline back when he was being recruited. I'd rather our players not do this to other teams seems like a shaddy thing to do.

Edit beaten to the punch.

They talked about this during the OU-Texas game.  Played at a neutral site, only the designated home team (this year Texas), could host recruits.  I would assume this would apply to away games.  Certainly kids can buy their own tickets and attend.

What would be more interesting is what the policy would be for one-time games at neutral sites such as the UM-Bama game at Jerryworld next year?  I assume both schools could host recruits in this case?

How is it a "visit" if it is on someone else's campus?  The whole point is for the recruit to see the campus of the team he is visiting.

One thing I would never allow any recruit to ever do is visit my stadium to cheer the other program or visit that program's sideline.  I was ticked off when I found that out, and Michigan staff in charge should have escorted moC out of the stadium long before the game started and told him thanks but go home you are not wecome here now.

It was pretty well reported.

It's not on Lloyd or any of the other coaches, it's not their responsibility during a game to be watching where a recruit is watching the game.  Their contact with him isn't going to come until postgame.  Rather, it's 100% on the Athletic Department folks wrangling them around.  Those people know where all these kids are all the time.  It's their job to make sure they're having a good time, etc. etc.  They're the ones welcoming them, escorting them into the game, and watching over them while they're on the sidelines.  They should have known and seen what Clarett was up to.  Apparently, they didn't.  And if they did, they didn't do the right thing.

And, let's face it, the face of recruiting has changed immensely since that incident.  No blogosphere, recruiting sites were pretty rudimentary at best, it was a bit of the dark ages.  We know about 1000 times more about what a recruit is thinking and where he's leaning now than we did in 2001.  I really don't think a kid like Clarett could pull off a stunt like that in 2011.

Eh, depends looking back now maybe his getting paid was an institutional thing.  If he would have came here probably wouldn't have happened.  However OSU would not have won the national championship because a lot of those games he was their only offense, and the next year they had no run game and were not nearly as good.  We also would have beat OSU for sure that year.
