College Gameday and Early Games Open Thread 10/08

Submitted by Jeff on

College Gameday is at the Red River Shootout this week.  Coming up after the next break they'll be talking about Michigan.

The early games are mostly lame except for the main game:

  • Oklahoma-Texas (ABC)
  • Minnesota at Purdue (ESPN)
  • Louisville at North Carolina (ESPN2)
  • Maryland at Georgia Tech (ESPNU)
  • Illinois at Indiana (BTN 2:30, so kind of a late afternoon game)

Texas is down 20-3.  Go Sooners.

Minnesota vs. Purdue is unwatchabale and unlistenable.  Pam only had to say "Boiler Up" and I'd had enough of her talking.

Not really surprised to see Minny getting worked over this badly.  I didn't take much from last week except that Minny was really bad at football.  That said, I don't Purdue is that good either, and wouldn't be surprised if they fell off a little as the game progressed.  At some point, the Gophers are going to pull whatever pride they have and play something resembling football for at least a quarter.

Is this sort of season that can get a first-year coach fired? Especially after seeming to throw the former coach and current players under the bus for lack of toughness?

No.  They aren't getting results like we are, but I've heard some of our coaches say our players lack toughness, even comparing them to the players they inherited at Ball State.  It takes time to change the culture in a program.  We were just lucky enough to have a lot of talented players returning.

So how in the hell did we get destroyed by Miss. St.? This team is not good, it is hard to believe they destroyed M 10 short months ago. Miss. St. in a scoreless battle with winless UAB with 8 minutes to go in the half.

Shane reportedly struggled last night. The only bit of the stat sheet I got from a reliable, HS-football-loving source was 5 completions, 85 yards. I know nothing about his attempts/TDs/INTs. Anyone have more info?

Yeah, check out Ace's twitter.  From what I've gathered, his team really isn't that good.  Receivers dropping passes, no protection, no running game.  Dunno about the defense.  Actually if you look at his stats from last year, they aren't very good either.  Last year he had something like just over 1000 yards passing on the year and just over 50% completions.  Someone on the board pointed out that he didn't even have a TD pass in his league play last year (which was true).  This is basically why actually seeing and evaluating a high school prospect is much more important than a stat line.  From all reports he as an accurate thrower, HUGE arm, smart, and good size.

This OU/Texas game is EXACTLY why I've said for 2-3 weeks now that we are ranked too high.

People keep jumping down my throat, but look at Texas, very similar to Michigan. Big school, coming off a disappointing year, goes undefeated and people start to believe and overrate.

Now I think we have better coaching and I think our schedule sets up better. But they were #11 and they're clearly not the 11th best team in the country. OU is beating them to a pulp.

Michigan hasn't played anyone either. Right now we're not at top 15 team. Beat N'Western and maybe...beat MSU and CERTAINLY.

Texas is getting manhandled...every thought that they were "back" was completely a farse. I don't think they're better than Oklahoma St. and may not be better than Texas A&M.

Based on Resume, who would you put in front of us?

We've moved up because we've won our games:  we've done what we are supposed to do.  If we really aren't good enough, we'll lose some and move down.

No one is saying that we've won that one game that vaults you 10 places in the polls.  No one is calling this Michigan team a national title possibility.  So relax, and just enjoy.

Michigan isn't really similar to Texas at all. We have an experienced offense, they have freshmen. They play Oklahoma, and barring Wisconsin in the BTCG, we play nobody close to that good.

We might be overrated (except by resme we aren't) but Texas has nothing to do with it at all.
