Semi-OT: Michigan Football, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Red Wings play at same time
So I was just going over my sports schedule this weekend and noticed this:
Michigan Football: 7pm EST
Detroit Tigers: 8pm EST
Detroit Red Wings: 9pm EST
Really? We have to have all three teams play at the same time?
I understand Michigan sets its schedule before either the Wings or Tigers and the Wings have to play an evening game after playing the night before, so why can't the Tigers play at 3:30pm? Anyone else frustrated with the scheduling?

You think they're going to change the schedule of the ALCS because the Wings' second of 82 regular season games is on at the same time?

No, if it was just the Wings game I wouldn't really care but I wouldn't go head to head with a Michigan football game even if it isn't a big rival and I definitely wouldn't go against the Michigan game and the Red Wings. My point is MLB should have looked at when the Michigan football game was and said Saturday afternoons are fine for baseball especially when Texas is playing at noon.

Still, I'm sure they don't look at regular season college football games when scheduling ALCS games.

but maybe they should. Texas plays a rivalry game at noon, so they obviously wouldn't want to compete with that given the Rangers probably share many fans with the Long Horns. As the OP mentions it seems like 3:30 would be a better time than 8 given competition in the markets. That being said, they probably figure ALCS will draw a national audience and aren't worried about the markets of the teams involved. Further there are less CFB night games than games at 330, so maybe this decision does jive with maximizing viewership.

Will the ALCS draw a national market without a big 4 city market team involved? No NY, LA, BOS, or CHI team means Tiger fans should make a considerable amount of the TV viewership. But on everything I else I agree with you.

The playoffs in baseball are a much more national event, and watched by a lot more people than people who would watch Michigan v Northwestern. MLB could care less when Michigan plays, they're going to get a great TV rating no matter what.

Considering that few Yankees or Red Sox fans will be watching I'd have thought that MLB would do everything possible to get as high of ratings as possible. Texas and Detroit aren't national teams so not having a major scheduling conflict with one of these teams home region would make sense.

I know you've scheduled and sold ad time based on there being an ALCS game at night, but Detroit has a conflict based on a regular season hockey game that will draw a 1.0 local rating and a Michigan game on the BTN. You don't mind if we switch the game to 3, do you?

Don't forget about Michigan hockey at 7:35 PM. Combine that with the intramural sports playoffs (students!) starting this Sunday and MNF this is just an insane few days.

For me it is an easy choice because Michigan football always comes #1 to me. I know the Tigers are a big deal to many on this board so the scheduling has to frustrate many.

Our game will be over around 10:15, which, given the glacial pace of how network baseball playoff games move, means that the Tigers game will be in roughly the fourth inning. So people that watch M will miss 4 innings of one baseball playoff game--what exactly is the choice again?

I feel for all the Tigers and Red Wings fans, but for me this is the big deal. Hopefully I will be somewhere that has both games showing. It is just hard to find places on the west coast that has BTN on.

Basically everyone agrees with me (might not be as upset) that having all these games at once is annoying but I'm being negged. That makes sense.
I'm just hoping for Michigan to blow out NW so at 8pm I can start flipping between the Michigan game and the Tigers. Then at 9pm hopefully the Michigan game will be so one sided it'll be basically done (like done UFRing done) so I can then flip between the Tigers and Wings game. This sort of feels like that dog, cat, and mouse river + boat question.

It makes sense especially if you're going to question being negged. Do you honestly believe that everyone should get together and coordinate their schedules, or did you start the thread to point out something that we would have thought anyway, that it might be inconvenient to have several games on television simultaneously?
TV (family room): Michigan vs.Northwestern
TV (living room): Tigers vs. Rangers
TV (master bedroom): Red Wings vs. Avalanche
Wife works afternoon shift at St. Joe's in Ann Arbor. Kids will be asleep by then. It's planned, man.

Most pro-teams do coordinate their schedules so they don't play at home at the same time especially if their stadiums are next to each other (or the same stadium). Why can't they do the same for TV? Thats all I'm asking. MLB has a hard enough time keeping baseball fans tuned in to the playoffs when Boston or NY isn't in it. Since MLB will need a good Detroit audience to boost their numbers and make up for no NY/Bos/Chi/LA teams I'd have figured they wouldn't go head to head with two other Michigan teams especially two with a large and loyal fanbase.

Texas played both of it's home games against TB earlier in the day. Game 1 was at 3:00pm and had 50,000 fans in attendance and game 2 was at 3:28pm and had 51,000 fans and this was on a Friday and Saturday. I don't know why a game a week later at the same time would draw fewer fans.

It was called the red river Shootout for something like 70 years, an was only changed because to be politically correct. Same thing as Georgia v Florida now can't be called the "Worlds largest outdoor cocktail party".

Well, at least they're not starting at the same time. The Michigan game should end in time to catch the last couple of innings of the Tigers.
As for the Wings . . . is one regular-season game that big of a deal, that you're mulling watching it over Michigan football and playoff baseball?

Uhm, I said above if it was just the Wings game I wouldn't care. It's the fact that Michigan is scheduled for 7pm and Wings at 9pm so why would baseball decide to play this game at 8pm.
No way does a Wings game trump a Michigan football game and I never said anywhere that it did. But the Red Wings normally trump the Tigers so which game I watch depends mostly on how the baseball game starts.

Needless to say Michigan gets the 72 inch. OSU/Nebraska will get the "smaller" (50 something) TV, and Auburn/Arkansas on ESPN3. The only benefit of moving home is the large conglomeration of TVs in the KinesiologyNerd household.

They're going to put game two up against the Lions return to Monday Night Football. They must just really hate Detroit fans. I can't think of any other reason they want to show these games in prime time.
