Blues Brother Tutorial
Since Michigan continues to play the blues brother song during the games, I thought I would include a tutorial for everyone. This video is from the Minnesota game and shows all of the important parts. The key is to start low and build it up.

Just no. Please stop with this. Saying this as a student. No more coordinated dancing please. Especially at hockey games.

Uncoordinated dancing?
October 2nd, 2011 at 10:48 PM ^
I always liked just making the fat guy in each section dance. Or Jack Johnson's dad. Either one worked.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:46 PM ^
I agree with this. Having a single fool dance until he falls down is orders of magnitude more interesting than watching a bunch of idiots dance. My personal favorite to watch is Charles Clinton. Charles, if you're out there in Mgoworld come to more hockey games.

I'd like spontaneity.
October 3rd, 2011 at 10:25 AM ^
So what I can assume by all your posts is you just hate everything about the crowd interaction at Yost. And since you say "I'd like spontaneity" you probably hate the penalty chant, ugly goalie chant, we want more goals chant, how much time is left & the Victors since we do those all the time.
If I am wrong is this just a "I'm too cool to dance" thing?
October 3rd, 2011 at 10:31 AM ^
I love the crowd interaction. Yost is the absolute best college hockey arena. The dancing contributes nothing to the game. Does it help the team? No. I understand there are a few other things that we do that don't contribute to the game; however, those have become tradition. I'm praying that this doesn't. I don't think I'm too cool to do anything, I post on MGoBlog.

When the students dance there is absolutely nothing happening on the ice at the time. The teams are still in the locker rooms and maybe the refs come on the ice while it is still going. It seems to raise the energy level in the building just before the 3rd period begins and it gets the silent part of the crowd on their feet and cheering.
So I guess I just don't understand what the big deal is.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:05 PM ^
Just because you're a student doesn't mean your opinion is worth more than others'.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:41 PM ^
As in I'm not some old fart that wants you down in front. Blues Brothers is tired, it was great back in 07. It's now 2011.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:03 AM ^
back in 1981.
October 3rd, 2011 at 8:08 AM ^
I am the old fart, I want you down in front so I can see the action. Dance away during the non-action sequences as I will be taking a short nap so that I can handle the excitement of the game. Don't step on my oxygen hose and stay off my grass you dang kids.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:28 PM ^
And while we're at it lets get rid of that coordinated fist pumping during the Victors. What is this, the Jersey Shore?

Well I'm a student too, and I say long live the Blues Brothers dance.
October 2nd, 2011 at 10:41 PM ^
There was one Hockey game I went to where it seemed like this went on for like 10 minutes or so. IT was pretty cool....
October 2nd, 2011 at 10:46 PM ^
I know this guy. He does this at every football and basketball game he can get to. If you are at a basketball game, you'll see him doing this as he runs up and down the aisles.
He once followed me all the way home from a class. And then proceeded to turn around and go the other way. Somewhat awkward.
October 2nd, 2011 at 10:59 PM ^
He seems confused.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:04 PM ^
Maybe he supports Washtenaw County? or maybe he just loves Mike Hart.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:43 PM ^
he supports KFC and Taco Bell in addition to the institutions of Washtenaw County

I was wearing an Eastern Shirt and Michigan hat to the Michigan-EMU game. But I went to Eastern and like Michigan. It was tough. I was down on the field though....so I don't care...:)

To continue with my railing of the blues brothers. Hockey fans, after the band stops playing blues brothers, that's not the signal to continue it and sing it on your own. It means the song is over. I was upset with the second intermission this past hockey game, even more so than the actual game itself.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:27 AM ^
Maybe it's just me, but I literally get goosebumps hearing the voices echoing around Yost after the band finishes and we keep it going. It is just a part of what makes Yost college hockey's best arena.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:35 AM ^
No doubt is it one of my favorite traditions at michigan to do the blues brothers dance between the second and third periods.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:49 PM ^
I think this past Saturday was the longest rendition of Blues Brothers that I have ever seen. It's a fun song/dance especially in blowouts. Sorry if it's sooooo 07 kiddo
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:50 PM ^
At the risk of being that guy, I just wanted to actually quickly write the proper way of doing the Blues Brothers dance. When you put your hands into the air, you are supposed to go the left first, do the traveling/false start motion, then to the right. During the clapping parts, we in the Maize Rage (and probably the Children of Yost before us) have been trying to coordinate a little more. For the first part, one person goes forward for two claps while the people on either side of him stay straight up for two claps. The next two claps you alternate positions, then continue to alternate until the fist-hitting-air motion starts. For the second rotation, you alternate crouching over for two counts and bouncing up and down. For the third rotation we have been alternately swinging to the left then to the right.
Sorry this is probably very confusing if you don't know exactly what I'm talking about, but I have noticed a lot of students that have no clue what they are doing. There is probably a serious video on how to properly do it.
October 2nd, 2011 at 11:54 PM ^
but when you need a lengthy paragraph like that to coordinate fan involvement, you either should join the dance team if you want to dance or really just not do it. In case anyone was wondering, I really hate the blues brothers dance now. A few years back it was innovative and fun, now it's tired and old. One man's opinion.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:15 AM ^
but when you need a section to sit in for hockey games, you should either join the ugly parents or really just avoid section 17. In case anyone was wondering, the blues brothers dance really hates you now. A few years ago it was ok with you, now it's tired of your crap. One person's opinion.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:22 AM ^
No one asked you to do it. Let us have our fun, and you can do what you want.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:27 AM ^
But you forgot the first rule of the Internet....If it is not fun for me, it is not fun for anyone else. But I must not leave it at that, I must remind everyone of why it is not fun for me and shouldn't be fun for them.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:22 AM ^
Absolutely won't go anywhere near section 17. I noticed on Saturday that all the annoying students moved towards that area and closer to the band, while the people who ya know actually wanted to watch hockey moved closer to center ice and away from the band. It's a novel concept to actually care about the hockey and want to watch the action instead of caring more about dancing, spelling, dressing up, and asking the refs to check the nets. I understand it adds character to yost, but how about we just make lots of noise and get under the opposing team's skin? Glad you tried to mock me, that was super clever. Amateur hour.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:28 AM ^
lol u mad bro?
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:30 AM ^
Eh, not really. Wish the Phillies would've won and the Ravens defense wouldn't have scored so many points. But the Tigers managed to win, and I'm prolly going to games 3 and 4, so not too much to be mad about. Why are you wondering?
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:52 AM ^
Considering your other responses on this thread, I am not remotely surprised that you're a Phillies fan.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:40 AM ^
Let me know when you attend every home game in the regular season and travel to every post season game of the last 4 years.... somehow I keep seeing my buddies from 16 and 17, and half the casual asshats can't even make it to Detroit for the MSU game. Somehow, I've never had a problem watching the game from my front row seats either. And I wasn't aware that you could only make noise from one section of the arena or that it was mutually exclusive from the rest of our shenanigans, not like we could hear how awesome your noisemaking must've been over our own heckling.
And PS
Clever's in my name, and I will continue mocking you to my little heart's content, because I've been around here before you even passed your driver's test... but that's assuming you did, and who knows, you're a Phillies fan.
October 3rd, 2011 at 9:07 AM ^
guess what, I have been to 98% of the home games in the last 6 years. Been to half of the postseason games in that time, on a college student's budget. Even went to the awfully attended St Louis regional, where the Michigan ticket office even unexpectedly gave me free tickets on site. It's sad that you claim to be ridiculously odd, yet are buddies with the students. Rethink your life decisions. I'm actually a Cubs fan, meaning I hate the Cardinals.
October 3rd, 2011 at 9:34 AM ^
My bad, I assumed you were a freshman or sophomore from your whining. I'm a senior, and seeing as I was also at St. Louis, I'm assuming you're one of those people who didn't feel like showing up til Saturday as there were only 6 of us Friday. My life decisions have been excellent, but thanks for your concern, pal.
October 3rd, 2011 at 10:28 AM ^
Once again incorrect. I was there both days. But predictably, I didn't go sit in the end zone with the rest of you guys, I sat in my assigned seats by the goal line. The freshman and sophomores love the cheer, it's a few of us older students that don't. As in the ones who are into our sixth or seventh year with student tickets. Some of us just stay in school forever.
October 3rd, 2011 at 11:12 AM ^
You know, bragging about attending the St. Louis Regional on a college student's budget is kind of mitigated when you mention that the tickets were free. Also, bragging about the number of games you have gone to in an effort to prove you're a great fan is stupid.* Many of the older fans who want fans in front of them to sit down have been going to games for over 20 years. This does not mean that it isn't incredibly annoying when said older fans yell at people to sit down. Similarly, your insistance that the coordinated dance should stop is also annoying, no matter how long you've been going to games. It's fun, it adds character to Yost, and it has nothing to do with watching (or not watching) the game because we dance during the second intermission.
*And incidentally, if you intend to claim that I only don't care about how many games anyone's been to because I haven't been to many, I've been going to games since the 1997 CCHA tournament, when I was 6 years old. I am currently a Junior with season tickets and I was also at the St. Louis Regional last year.
October 3rd, 2011 at 11:49 AM ^
He probably had to skip all his super hard classes and drive alllll the way into the slums of St. Louis and pay for a cheap hotel alllll by himself!!
But seriously, if you didn't cheer for me in the cart races during the UNO game I can't excuse you. SHAKE AND BAKE.
October 3rd, 2011 at 12:49 PM ^
Absolutely cheered for you. Was that the tag team race? I'll root for anything Michigan. In that vein, go Michigan Solar Car at the worlds. That should buy me some good will. On the other hand, I now expect to have fully riled a few of you up and expect to see the Blues Brothers dance especially ridiculous tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully I'll be at the Tigers game instead.

"...Can't Turn you Loose." Otis Redding did it before Belushi even knew what cocaine was. Calling it "Blues Brothers" would be like calling Beethoven's fifth "Charlie Sheen" because he can pick out the first four notes on a piano.

Who doesn't know what cocaine is by the time they're 16?
