Petition: Seven Nation Army
EDIT: OK relax everyone. The main concern was that playing 7NA 5 times in a quarter is a bit excessive. Although I'd like to see piped-in music removed completely, I also understand why its popular. If Hoke and the players like it, obviously thats what matters most... but I have a feeling the emotional response to the song will be less significant with more frequent use.
I know there are more important things going on right now, but I would like to gauge interest on this board about starting a petition regarding the use of piped in music. Although getting rid of it entirely is probably not a realistic goal at this point, I would like to write a letter to the appropriate parties in order to limit its use. The 1st quarter just ended, and I heard Seven Nation Army play about 5 times already. How would you guys feel about a petition promoting the following:
- Emphasis on the MMB over piped-in music
- Songs like "Seven Nation Army" should only be played ONCE throughout the game if at all. (I have to admit at the ND game, I didn't mind a well-placed White Stripes or Lose Yourself when used sparringly.)
- Following the tradition of Michigan football and the game day experience

I dont know what the heck it is about that song, but for some reason it gets the entire stadium--not just the student section--on their feet and making noise. If you could convince 114,000 people to give their battlecry every down for the defense, that would be ideal. What it isn't is realistic. As a person who is too old for the student section, it is a hell of a lot easier to yell at the top of my lungs with 7 nation army in the background than the dead silence we have grown accustomed to.

What game were you at in '04. The atmosphere at the SDSU game was a complete snoozer. I guess the wine an cheese crowd that wishes it was still the 1930's would have loved it.

It'll never get out completely, I mean lots of people like it. Especially our players; the first time they played it (during the first drive of the game) I could see Denard standing on the sidelines on a bench getting into the music with some other players as well.
However, I agree it should be limited somewhat. It was kind of weird to hear it played what felt like every other series, but it was a non conference 21-0 game, so I understand the reasoning a little. They needed some kind of excitement from the pretty dull game

learning what music is before spouting off. The band plays "The Victors" a lot, but is usually sufficiently diverse.
As a former MMB member, we have a massive repretoire, but it's not really up to us what we play. The Athletic Department has a large amount of control over this.

I heard from my friend in the Marketing Department that Hoke told them that he really likes when they play Seven Nation Army, so they were going to try to play it more. So take it up with with the Coach, br0.

I love the song, and I'm a student so maybe that is why. However, I think it was overplayed today especially considering we were playing SDSU.

As a recent former student, I understand this sentiment. There was a time in my pre-21 days that Sweet Caroline was cool. That time was the first two times I sung it drunk in a bar at 2am. Then I realized its a stupid song.
But the thing is, there's so many other songs that can pump up the crowd, yet the athletic department decides to not only use something everyone does, but use something that major rivals (OSU and PSU) have made a tradition of.
In '08-09 the basketball team's anthem was "Let it Rock" and it was awesome. The crowd got crazy when it was played and now whenever hear or think of that song I think of Manny Harris' and-1 in the NCAA tournament to seal the victory. Why can't the AD think outside of the box and find some more originality like that.

Although I am over 50 year old, I will do my best to stay off your lawn. WTF are you thinking? Do you actually go to the games? SNA gets the crowd going. The MMB can't do it at a moment's notice like hitting the play button can. Personally, I miss "welcome to the jungle".
I don't think we could have amped up the crowd against ND without the Rawk music. I love it and I expect to hear it every time I am in the stadium. I love the MMB, but they do have their limitations.

I spent the last 5 years in the student section before moving out of AA and haven't sat or been quiet for any period of time not called half time. The main point was to limit the overuse of songs like 7NA. Possibly the tone of the original post came off different than intended, but the main thing is that 5 times in a quarter is a bit excessive and overkill. Once or twice a game would be much better IMHO.

First, I can't believe lame topics like this (similar to should we wear maize and blue cleats)remain posted on the board.
Second, the band can only play The Victors and Lets Go Blue so many times. Outside of that. the band needs to brush up on some new tunes. I love the band, but Thriller, Sweet Caroline, etc (the same songs I've been hearing for the last twenty years), are a bit long in the tooth. I think the Stadium has just about the right mix of band + piped in music. I think it works just fine and seems like most at the Stadium pretty much agree. Nothing beats the band coming on the field at the beginning of the game, but there is a place for outside music and I think we've found it.
Lastly, please no Lose Yourself. I love that Em is from Detroit, but not a big fan of that song and don't miss not hearing it.

I am still feeling out both sides of the fence on the piped in music issue and could go on a Faulkneresque ramble about the pros and cons of this issue...
HOWEVA, all arguments about how to best hype up the crowd are essentially irrelevant on a day like today when half the freaking student section didn't bother to show up for the first quarter. I'm a fairly recent alumnus ('03), I know early games can cut into prime drinking and/or recovery time, but it seemed that a majority of our "best fans" flat-out missed the team marching out to a 21-0 lead. It was pretty embarrassing. Kudos to the Screaming Blue Messiahs who were there on time and sacrificing their vocal chords as usual, but we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking our overall fanbase is going to suddenly become something it is not based on the subtleties of what song is played when and how.

Do you think if they made the games general admission for the student section it would fix this problem? It's easier to be lax about when to show up when you know you have a seat waiting for you. Gen. admission would make sure the students show up before kickoff.

YES! This is such a big part of the issue! I'm not a student anymore, but even when I was I wished it was general admission. It would force people to be there on time, reward the die-hards who show up early, and generally make for a better atmosphere.
And if it resulted in a reduction in student tickets because the sorority folks don't want to go from the - you know - game, then all the better. I'd rather have a reduction in students (the ones who are there to take pictures of themselves) and an increase in people that care about the games.

Late arriving students is an issue at most schools for early games. Even the beloved Jump Arounders at Wisky are late shows. Went to the Mich game there 2 years ago and the student section was less than half full for the entire 1st half.

It is a notorious phenomenon at Camp Randall; thousands of the students showing up sometime in the second quarter.
Alvarez and Bielema complain about it; the Badger athletic department has done announcements about it. It is ridiculous; how late they arrive.
Part of Wisconsin's problem is that they sometimes do games at 11 a.m. (CT, in Madison), to fit "noon" broadcast times in the Eastern Time Zone.
And guess what; the Badgers' record under Bielema in their 11 am games is phenomenal, without the students there at the beginning of the games.
11 a.m. start? UW 16-0 under Bielema
Bielema didn't have to be told UW is unbeaten on his watch when home games start at 11 a.m.
"I'm very aware," he said.
The Badgers improved to 16-0 under Bielema, including 4-0 this season. The last time the Badgers lost at home with an 11 a.m. kickoff was Sept. 13, 2003, when UNLV won 23-5.
This might help explain why Bielema keeps trying to woo UW students, who are notorious for arriving late to the late-morning games. He has made multiple overtures, including an e-mail Friday saying he'd see them at the stadium at 10:55 a.m.
"We've got one of the best environments in college football," he said. "I was watching (ESPN) 'GameDay' earlier today before our game and one of the talking heads talked about Penn State having such a great student section. We've got that same thing when (our students) are there.
"Now, (the students) do better with later kickoffs. They'd be the first to tell you they enjoy 4 o'clock kickoffs, 3 o'clock kickoffs. But I'm into winning football games, which is why I like 11."
That was from a 2009 article. I'm not sure what the Badgers' 11 a.m. record is at home since then. I am not aware of them having lost. They could be 20-0 or 21-1 or better by now.
This business about how Michigan absolutely needs a more noisy and hostile atmosphere to succeed in college football is a huge joke.

And can agree it was played maybe too much and too early. But it does get people to make noise. And it doesn't matter what "kind" it is, because it's not noise vs. louder noise, it's noise vs. No noise. Because when they played it today, people were sitting on their hands, and it made them make some noise. When they didn't play it, they didn't make some alternative louder noise. If you have a solution for that, fine.

To you people complaining about originality,
I'm pretty sure Penn State has been piping (or having their band play) a song that was originally written in Detroit, Michigan, and their fans have been singing/yelling to the melody. Some of you are acting as if the song had been written on Penn State's campus. They don't own it, and it's as much a part of our state and university's culture as theirs (The White Stripes is a Michigan-based band, so 7NA may hold more significance for us).
So what if we're doing something similar to their crowd? Singing/yelling along to a melody (en masse, or otherwise) isn't anything new. Mankind has likely been doing it since pre-historic times, and it is one of the least original things that a we can do.
Maybe I'm alone in this, but I'd rather have us yelling like the Penn State crowd than doing a unique dance with the song and making less noise. Heck, even the east side of the stadium makes noise for 7NA.
Just "let it be"...

If anyone was at the ND game, 7NA got the Big House going crazy! it was loud as shit! The only other song that got the crowd crazy was Lose Yourself. The only thing that pissed me off is the skipping or freeze of the songs. I mean you spend 20 mil on new scoreboards and technology and you cant stop songs from freezing/skipping? Also one of the scoreboards was already messed up...1 panel or whatever was messed up.

a good thing. However a little piped in music is okay too. I didnt make it to the game today but hearing it on TV in the first quarter was nice. Hearing it in the 4th quarter was rather, well, not so nice.
We have the best band on the planet. We need them to play more.

I thought they went to 7NA one too many times that early. They should have spread it out or saved it for later. I've been on the fence about piped in music, but I noticed today how often they piped it in when the band/drumline was shuffling to and from their seats. That's a good time for it. watch for this next week.

<br>I've been going to games since the early 90s, and at times I was actually frustrated with the band a little bit because they used to play the Victors and only the Victors constantly (not just when we scored). I like how the band is playing more songs. Zeppelin sounds great. Even Sweet Caroline is fine. Do they still play Squirrel Nut Zippers' Hell? That was another one that sounds good with the band.

Yes. In fact, this game (the first one I didn't attend, maybe this happened other games) the cameras did a nice crowd shot of students dancing.
