Scouting SDSU vs. Army

Submitted by Thorin on

Sorry if you thought I had already done a scouting report for you. That's your job. I'm just the video guy. It might be interesting to compare this with their bowl game vs. Navy and see if football teams are actually better when they have coaches.

Well, you'll learn less from this game because once again Rich Ellerson has tweaked formations. Last year he abandoned the flexbone for a near straight veer attack. This year the wishbone makes an appearance.

You do learn plenty about the coaches.

So far what I've learned: Hillman good.  Lindley is accurate.  I still don't like the 3-3-5.

Update: Holy shit, Army likes to fumble

Non-sarcastic/actual scouting update: SDSU seems to like to stretch the field, as they did last year as well.  They aren't throwing the timing routes like we saw against Western and ND.  Unfortunately for them, their OL doesn't seem the best at pass protection.  They don't pick up blitzes well, and SDSU is lucky that Lindley is still so accurate under pressure.  Speilman was also absolutely correct.  The 3-3-5 seems to create a lot of bubbles in the D near the LOS.  Army is having their best success running right at it.  Maybe we should come out in the I-form instead of the spread initially?  The D is having trouble with the running QB (hooray!), as well as being susceptiable to counters and misdirection.  They are pretty good defending the perimeter.  And just to reiterate, Lindley is like really accurate, especially on deep balls.

Their offense looks good, but they haven't played a defense with any size yet, so we'll see.

If Army didn't fumble so much they would have won that game.

If Army's QB can get out and run like that, what can Denard do?

It looks like SDSU got very lucky with turnovers and penalties at least in the first quarter... their DL is consistently blown off the ball and because you don't have to double team them, OL easily get to the 2nd level. Deep throws won't work against our corners... they are likely faster than SDSU's receivers (and their best receiver is a converted corner). But, despite the fact that they are a pro-style team, I think we'll need to put Woolfolk as nickel over Escobar.

Their OL has terrible technique..

Army had 446 yards of offense to SDSU's 292, TOP: Army 42:11 and SDSU 17:49. It's amazing sometimes how 3 turnovers can erase 50% more yardage and 25 more minutes of posession. If army doesn't cough em up or their D can prevernt SDSU from scoring off all of them game over. No such luck for the Black Knights.

Heh.  Thornegasm doing Army vs SDSU on a college sports channel.  I wonder if there's any chance that the BTN could pick him up.  Especially if it starts showing hockey.

Run and run some more.  Vince, Fitz, and Denard will have a field day.

SDSU likes the deep ball and they are accurate with it.  It's going to be a good test for our 'D', but Michigan will pound on them to the tune of 35 to 17.
