Legend number question
So let's say some kid in the future wears the #21 Desmond Howard jersey. He sets a ton of records and wins a heisman...How does he get recognized? Another question is if the #1 gets a legendary patch? Is the Anthony Carter and Braylon Edwards legacy jersey?

that the patch would feature multiple names. You know there'll be a precedent set if the descendants of the Wistert brothers chose to have the #11 put back into circulation. That's three names right there.
I'd certainly prefer to see one patch with multiple names rather than a patch for each player. By the year 3000 the #1 would look like a Girl Scout uniform.

Legends jerseys should be restricted to freshmen and sophomores only.

I'd presume that the legends jerseys would be coveted and might be reserved for upper classmen who have proven themselves. This would parallel the current handling of no. 1.

Incoming players are young, and young kids are typically very sure of themselves and their future.
"When I leave here I want a patch all to meself-- gimme a number nobody's ever made special befo'."
--That's exactly how they'd say it, too.

Or better yet, does anyone have a photo of it that they can post?

Wasn't it on Hemingway's jersey on Saturday?

This U-M press release had a photo of the patch.

Agreed one decent sized patch with a legendary player dating as far back as the team sees fit and then anyone who wears that number and becomes a huge player for Michigan gets his name added to it.

I still don't know how I feel about the patch. I think they should keep the retired jersey's retired and retire new ones like Desmonds rather than have a player like Hemingway trying to make a name for himself with that number but has to wear a patch with Desmond's name and years he played.

I was thinking about the AC versus Braylon issue for jersey #1. I agree with you, blueindy, that AC was the most deserving. But for generations that don't remember AC, they associate the jersey with Braylon. Braylon also endowed a scholarship linked to the #1 jersey, so it might be difficult not to include him as a Legend. I'd guess that #1 will end up representing both AC and Braylon.

While I admit I cannot truly appreciate AC as he is before my time, I think the legend distinction should allow for players like Braylon.
Top WR in the nation his senior year in what was also the most prolific season for a WR in UM history even while breaking in a true freshman QB (Desmond's return ability made him special, but in terms of raw receiving numbers it had to be Braylon). Not to mention he's the career leader in receptions, yards, and TDs. UM may not have been a national contender during his time there, but he was an incredible wideout and worthy candidate to be bestowed on the #1 jersey for years to come.

I really just think this should be reserved for Heisman winners or to the numbers already retired. I'm not saying AC and Braylon weren't awesome but I feel the Legend tag should be reserved for the likes of Woodson, Howard, etc.

is you do a patch that is not necessarily person specific and then add a star to the patch for each legend that has worn that number. Pretty much ripping off the World Cup jerseys for soccer.

The answer is so obvious. Just the Legend numbers to bad players and then we'll have nothing to worry about.
That should solve everything.

and probably breaks some technicality in the rule book. I'm all for the locker, the honor, Put them up on a ring around the stadium. But keep them off the jerseys. oh well, too late.
