What Was the Maize Pom-Pom Chant?

Submitted by SC Wolverine on

Television coverage of the Big House frenquently showed a Maize Pom-Pom waving chant that looked disturbingly like something that takes place at Atlanta Braves games.  It seemed very, uh, untraditional.  But it also seemed like the whole stadium was into it, so maybe it was something good.  We just couldn't tell on tv.  Can anyone enlighten me?

(While I'm at it, I'm flying my boys up for the epic game with tsio this year.  Any advice on where to look for a hotel?  Thanks.)

...and when I was a student, most students clearly "hand-chopped" along with Temptation (also bad).  Some of my friends occasionally make up words for Temptaion in the search for something better...but it's always been more of a joke than anything.  My last "suggestion" involved pointing instead of chopping while singing "Hoke likes to point".

The band's version differs enough from the original to make these lyrics a little awkward, but here's something anyway:

Perry Cuomo - Temptation

You came, I was alone

I should have known

You were temptation

You smiled, luring me on

My heart was gone

And you were temptation

It would be thrilling if you were willing

And, if it can never be, pity me

For you were born to be kissed

I can't resist, you are temptation, I

Am yours, here is my heart

Take it and say that we'll never part

I'm just a slave, only a slave

To you, temptation

I'm your slave!!!

7 Nation Army is NOT a PSU chant, sure they do it, but they weren't the first and it isn't the one they are most famous for.  Everyone is confusing it with zombie nation for some reason.  If any thing 7 Nation Army is a soccer chant as they have been using it much longer than college football teams have.

I'm as big a get-off-my-lawner as anyone, and piped-in music is no exception, but....damn if the Seven Nation Army chant didn't sound - and look - really, really good.  It was loud, unique (to Michigan in college football, at least), not overused.  I like it.  A lot.

Actually, I think your YouTube links are wrong though.  Watch the videos of 7 Nation Army and Zombie Nation, then re-watch the videos you posted and tell me what song they are playing.

This is 7 Nation Army by the White Stripes, with actual words:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mut_jxG1Uhc

Now this is Whoa Oh by Zombie Nation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkzMizcPqBI

To me it sounded like they were chanting the Whoa Oh song in the links they posted, but they were titled wrong on YouTube.  Seems a lot of people mix 7 Nation Army, the song, and Zombie Nation, the band

have been yelling various words that are not usually said in polite public for about the last 35 years (since 1976 anyway!) from *&!# the Bucks! to the famous Sh*& band chant following the Bullwinkle theme music.  The one's today are no worse than they were 35 years ago, somethings never change.....

as to the answers to the OP questions, but watching the game on TV I have to say that looked like the most involved crowd I have ever seen at a UM game. Whatever they had to do to get the crowd going like that...I am all for! I have been watching UM on TV for about 20 years now and the crowd was at it's best Saturday night. Way to bring the noise! Bring on more night games DB, that was awesome!

played at the end of the game when the team was celebrating in the stands.  It sounded like the White Stripes track was being played.

While, yes, the stadium looked and sounded awesome on TV, I would have liked to see the team celebrating with the fans and student body to OUR song - - the whole team and fans singing the Victors!

White Stripes was great. That got the crowd as loud as it could get, and I think it really bothered ND's calls and adjustments. I felt like the crowd was a HUGE factor in the 4th. Thunderstruck also got the crowd pretty loud.

Im pretty sure the pop song was Taio Cruz - Dynamite (sp).

I thought the pumped in music was great. I wish there were speakers on both ends though. I was at the end opposite the speakers. It's still loud, but a "surround" sound would be lovely.

Try the Burnt Toast Inn on William St in dwntwn AA - good B&B option we have stayed there mutiple times and it's short walk to campus.   Hilton Garden Inn @ Sheldon Rd & M-14 often has rooms when AA is totally sold out.  The manager of the Sheraton @ Haggerty Rd & 8 Mile is an MGoBlogger.  We stayed @ Marriott Town Suites / Novi Town Ctr this time and it was awesome, for $109 per night we had two seperate bedrooms plus a full kitchen and 3 flatscreens, one in each bedroom plus a big one in the livingroom.  Easy 25-min drive to AA.

I thought the RAWK music selections were awesome on Sat.  This was the most pumped I have seen our crowd in a long time.  The band and the piped tunes were synched pretty well and EVERYONE in the stadium was into it - even 60+ geezers like me.  I was worried about my pompoms blocking the view of the peeps behind me so i kept mine low at first - but was quickly told to let it rip.  Section 5 gave the team a lot of vocal support and still get chills remembering staying long after the game singing and soaking it all in.

Temptation was added after defensive stops by the band sometime in the 1991-1993 time frame.   The band wanted to do something after defensive stops, and rather than just play the imperial march like 100 other teams do, they chose to use a snippet of Temptation.  Unfortunately, as someone upthread pointed out, the original words to Temptation don't fit a football game at all.

I think the arm chop started because the Band director at the time started doing it to the music and the student section picked it up.  It immediately looked like the Tomahawk chop and that was obviously a big mistake.

I have no idea when the "You Suck" thing got added, but I think that part is stupid and embarassing.  Especially when chanted on 4th and 1 right before the other team rams the ball forward for a 1st down/TD.  Or done when trailing Wisconsin 28-7 last year or whatever it was.

I honestly wish the band would find something else to play there, even though I love Temptation, just because I'm tired of the whole "You Suck" crap.

I always liked that because it was something MICHIGAN started and no one could take that from us.

While the White Stripes may be from Detroit, and I love that chant...it just fits better with Ohio ***** or any other team with "O" in the name.

The Lose Yourself instrumental wasn't as impactful or loud, but it was awesome to see the students on TV when that was played. With it coming from 8Mile and Eminem being from Detroit, it just fits.

Seven Nation Army and Zombie Nation are used by EVERYONE. If we do Seven Nation Army, I do like Indiana Blue's suggestion of "GooooO-oh-oh-oh Bluuuuuuu-uuuue."

Thanks guys for the great advice on where to stay.  It will be my first time to the Big House in roughly 30 years.  I am simply giddy to be taking my boys to the first annual Brady Hoke beat-down of tsio!

I've attended Serie A Italian Soccer matches w/ 7 nations army being chanted, but then again, the crowd is chanting something the entire game anyway over there.  It's pretty fun when one end chants one thing then the other duels back.
