Can we end the debate of the # 1 jersey?

Submitted by VinnieMac25 on

I  would just like to remove the 2 from Juniors Hemingways jersey.  This is why IMO, he should have it.  Kid makes big plays, in key moments.  Being double teamed, going up and getting the jump balls is what really sells it.  He wants that ball so much.  Sure he might lack a little breakaway speed, but he's a gamer!

I really like Roy Roundtree don't get me wrong.  He does make plays.  So glad we used some snake oil to get him.  Being quiet all night, to ask for the ball and make the GW TD catch is pretty magical.  Most definately an ESPN classic.  However I just don't think he garners enough impact presence on the field to consistently make that big play.  Junior is that player.

I underdstand the eligibilty with both players, just curious to see some opinions on this matter.  There has been so much debate with the # 1.  Will we see it worn by another receiever?  Or has one of these two done enough to wear it now?

I really like Junior and especially Roy, but they are not elite WRs. Solid? Absolutely. Roy is my favorite WR on ths team right now and if he has a great season this year, then maybe he can get the number 1 next season. Junior reminds me a little of Marquise Walker. Tough, physical WR with really good hands who makes spectacular catches every now and then.

Both good players.  Elite?  I'm not so sure.  A smarter man than me could probably run an analysis of some sort to support your desire.

in my mind I don't think anyone is that close to earning it yet.  it should come after a full season of domination, not just a game here and there.  roy did make a nice case last year though.

Perhaps #21 is the new #1. It should be a big honor to wear #21.Just add a patch to Junior's #21 jersey with HIS name on it.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread, but I don't see a #6 on the listed roster and was wondering if anyone knew if someone changed jersey numbers.

I'm with you.  I think Hemingway will be a big time NFL prospect and may go in the 2nd-3rd round.  He has size and makes plays -- too bad he hasn't been healthy for much of his career.

I don't like the idea of keeping the jersey from the field at all.  How many years has it been since anyone's been allowed to wear that number?   Might as well retire it.

The #1 jersey wasn't even a big thing, wasn't a  tradition until Carr told Edwards he had to earn it.   Why are we being so stingy with the number?

Give it to a senior WR who's done things right on and off the field.  Stop waiting for a "dominant WR" to come along.  It's college football,  give it to a deserving senior , not "let's wait till we have a #1 NFL draft pick at WR again".

You are absolutely wrong my friend, the #1 Jersey was there way before Braylon Edwards. Remember Alexander? How about David Terrel? There was a reason Braylon "asked" for it. The #1 Jersey is a huge part of the UM tradition and should not just nochalantly go to a senior that had a good spring/fall training camp or has good grades. We have plenty of those. You have to DOM1NATE for the #1 baby...

No need for an elaborate article filled with stats or other giborish. Both were All Big Ten, both were All Americans, and both were 1st rd picks in the NFL. The same goes for everybody that has worn the Jersey. Anybody on our roster fitting that description????

There was no special emphasis on "earning" the #1 jersey until Braylon.

Remember Tyrone Butterfield who wore #1 as a freshman?  IIRC he wound up transferring.

David Terrel had the number as a freshman as well, what had he done to earn it then?

Tai Streets was the leading WR that year, yet he wasn't wearing #1.

The national championship team didn't even have a #1 on the roster.

Yes, they were beasts in college, but they were given the #1 jersey as Freshmen (or as a Sophomore, in Alexander's case).  They didn't "earn" the jersey; they were given it.

Haven't we had this discussion a million times on this board?  None of the numbers never meant anything until one particular student-athlete decided that one particular number meant something, and the coaching staff let him think that.  We don't have to agree.

post last night Gallon probably deserved the #1...his play was reminiscent of Carter in 79 vs. the Hoosiers.  Wow...what a game.  If he had scored who could argue.  Wow what a game.

As it is ... it was perhaps more fitting to have Roundtree win it on a Desmond like grab in the corner.

Edwards would approve...

I repeat...what a game...it's what makes CFB great.

Gratuitous embeds because I'm just so happy. I can't wait to link to the game last night in 30 years when we post about who should wear the #1.

but I think last night proves there are more than a few guys who are getting "close" to earning it.  Think back to all the big catches sans the bomb to Junior over the middle of the field.  All required pretty decent adjustments made by the WRs to the balls thrown by Denard, most of the comeback and get it variety.  Seemed to be a lot of 50/50 balls that the wideouts did a nice job on.

I am with you if you're thinking is that there isn't that one "guy" yet, but Junior is close and, heck, Gallon had a monster night, too!  His catch and juke at the end was major.  I am very pleased with the receiving corp in place.

They should just take of the #21 from his jersey and put an S on his chest, because Denard is going to be looking for him to save the day quite a few times more this year. Thank god we have a playmaker like him (Gallon and Roundtree too, they're apart of this stat) to go win 50/50 balls, we were something like 5/6 on 50/50 jump balls (sorry, one was 33/66, as Junior was in double coverage). Without that I don't think we even score. He deserves the #1.

I like the #1 and #2 tradition if it truly becomes tradition.  I also think it would be fine to just issue the jeseys and let actions on the field dictate their history.

Other programs venerate there traditions (I'm specifically thinking of the Penn State defense) in different ways.  It serves a school well to remember the players before them however that is done.
