Tiny Upsetting Note - Turnovers

Submitted by Blazefire on

I am basking in the glory of our win, so I don't want to come down here at all, but I feel like I should make a note. After our win tonight I was hoping to make the argument that our defense is a turnover generating machine. After all, our backfield did jump a couple of those routes pretty well. However, I'm not sure I can.

Last week we took over versus Western on turnovers. We may have won anyway, but still. This week, Western won, but still had 4 turnovers (2 Int, 2 Fumble) and an additionaly fumble that they recovered. The jury is still out a bit, but I'm not sure we can count on generating these turnovers all season.

Prove me wrong, Mattison!

One of the picks from Western came from the backup QB and one of the fumbles was from a guy who got just one carry in the game.  Bench guys playing sloppy with the game in hand doesn't really make them a turnover machine on par with the Irish.

We just need to force 6 next week against Eastern and the positive trend continues.

As Brian has said, for the most part fumbles are random occurences.  But what I have noticed is a number of our turnovers have been directly due to pressure on the QB.  When you start hitting the QB and getting in his face, you make him think about it.  That causes bad decision making, poor timing, or tonight having the ball slip out of his hands.

So I do think our defense is partly responsible.  I think some of these turnovers are just random however and we should not expect to continue getting the benefit of them.  But I could see 1-2 per game for sure.

I am under the 24-hour rule.  Celebrate now; worry later.  AFAIC, everything was perfect.  I was impressed, though, that Hoke was obviously making his mental list of what to hammer the team about on Monday during his postgame interview.
