Recruiting Updates

Submitted by Lancer on

hey fellas, hope you had an enjoyable labour day weekend.
Thought I would share some recruiting news I've been hearing around the blogosphere. Mostly from the 247 blue board: http://247sports.com/Board/30/Michigan-Thread-Notre-Dame-Week-8-PM-Saturday-2685013/769

For the night game Darius Powe will not be able to make it because of complications with flight times. Apparently he has a night game Friday, so it makes things a little bit tough for him to come out. I think he is the best WR we're in on, hope he makes another time. Fellow California WR Payton has confirmed he will be there. Joshua Garnett will not be able to make according to his good friend Zach Banner. Banner will be in attendance though. Garnett said he wants to make out to AA after the season.

Dymonte Thomas wants to hear from Oregon, but Michigan remains his early favourite. From the rivals site we're no longer part of Peat's top group, but we're still in the mix. Justin Hopkins (a 247 staff member) is hearing that we are not out of for Dunn and to keep an eye on his recruitment. Encouraging, hope we can steal another one from osu :). Anyone got any recruiting news, please share! What’s up with Yuri Wright?

If that were the case, no that would not be a bad thing. He didn't have 4* ability as a freshman, he just performed as a freshman how you'd expect a future 4* to perform as a freshman, and hasn't improved at the rate people thought he would.

It's not that as a fresman he was better than most of the seniors in the country, it's that he was better than most of the other freshmen. Since then, a lot of those freshmen have passed him, but the hype he had from being one of the top freshmen has shown up in his offer list and recruiting rankings. Not dissimilar from Marvin Robinson.

Look, I'm not saying we don't take him. And you're right, he's got a hot offer list, and since he's making visits to these schools, we know at least some of them are still interested.

However, there are rising stock types and faling stock types, and it seems he's the latter. Now, that might mean his stock drops him from a high 4-star to a low 4-star in which case it's no big deal.

But a year ago this kid was getting crazy hype, was an early USC commit and everyone thought he'd be a 5-star lock. Now he's just inside the top 100 on Scout, outside the top 100 on Rivals and outside of the top 247 on 247. If those don't drop any further, he's still a guy we want. He's just not as hyped as we thought, and might not be as good as a couple of the others such as Darboh and Powe.

In fairness, I didn't know who he was a year ago, so I don't remember the "5-star lock" days. In theory, though, the sites' current ratings reflect how they see him as a prospect given all of the information available. At this moment, he would be right there among our highest-rated recruits.
When I heard all the "overrated" / "product of good marketing" stuff a little while ago, I figured that he make a Wayne Morgan-like drop to a middling 3-star. That's just not how the sites see him.

Although you're right, the season's hardly begun and the sites will do a lot more moving and shaking before it's all said and done.

And as far as him being among our highest rated recruits, it depends on the site you go with. If it's Rivals, then yes, he'd be 5th among our current commits. If you go by 247, he'd be behind 9 of our guys, pretty much middle of the pack.

It'd be interesting to see whether guys who fall in one re-rank are much more likely to fall in the next.
Anyway, I'm not trying to argue or be a dick. The conventional wisdom is pretty malleable around here, though, and I just wanted to raise a little doubt around the "overrated product of marketing" thing.

I don't think you were being a dick, just healthy back and forth.

Anyway, I'm not sure how much of it is a marketing thing as much as he was a very early bloomer who peaked early. His peak still might be high enough to be a solid player.

How he fares this year will tell a lot. I guess we'll see.

I just don't know what to believe recruiting wise now that TomVH isn't telling me. He seems to be one of the few that reports things after actually talking to the person, as opposed to hearing through another recruit or friend. Not to mention he seems to have good feel for recruits and gets more out of them than a lot of people (like when Kalis was talking to only him and everyone else was BSing, Tom knew what was happening). I'm sad now. Hopefully Ace can build up the relationships and connections the way Tom did. And then he can leave us as well. And then make me sad again.

in regard to getting another OL. With Garnett waiting until after the season to visit and Diamond taking his time, it will be a bit of a waiting game. But, that's a positive bit of news on Dunn. I haven't heard much one way or the other for a while. And in my book, he's still a huge target for Michigan. Anything new on the other running back - Brown?

But I'm pretty sold on Darboh... That kid can't commit soon enough, in my opinion.

On the other hand, if we could get two four star wideouts it'd be outstandical.

of the three WR's. Hopefully we can land two of them, that would be tremendous. It stnks that Garnett won't be in though, I had really high hopes for him. Great news about Dunn too, he is coming this weekend isn't he?
